I have a fetish for Ruger 10/22s. Post your 10/22 or any other rimfire you've got.

I'll start with mine

upgrading to a Boyds SS stock and a green mountain barrel soon
>>
>>29723324

>green mountain

can't say i was impressed with their barrel, was meh at best.
>>
>>29723394
what are some decent barrels then?
>>
>>29723446
Everyone I've ever asked says that Green Mountains are fine and out-preform factory Ruger Barrels enough to justify the price. They're just not $400 VQ or Lilja that autistic competition shooters use to put single holes in targets firing from a lead-sled.
>>
Is Ruger the king of rimfire rifles? I'm planning on buying a .22 as a first fun and there's a lot of cheaper options from Marlin, Mossberg, and Savage. Is there any manufacturer that is particularly good?
>>
Looking to get a MIST-22 barrel this summer. Anyone have one?

Also anyone have a toggle bolt that takes 10/22 mags?

Experiences with it or anything?
>>
>>29724528
Bumping for this as well. Looking to get my first funs over the summer since I'll finally have the time and money. Not to turn this into a "wat gun do i get" thread I'm sure pops up on here twice a week but I was kinda thinking a Glock 19 and a Marlin 925. I see the 10/22 is really popular but I've always preferred bolt-actions for plinkers.
>>
me too OP. I know green mountain isn't amaze-balls, but it'll be better than my 16 inch pencil barrel
>>
>>29724528
out of the box marlin 60 or 795 is better than a 10/22
but the 10/22 has aftermarket
savage has quite nice bolt actions for the price, their semi is meh
mossberg is cheap shit and cheap in every sense of the word
rem is averagely priced shit

This. The Marlin 60 and 795 series are both from the factory more accurate and have better qc than the 10/22. Also the bolt hold open on last round for the 795 is nice. The downside is the aftermarket for the 795 is meh.

Pic related, my 795 with the factory 10rd and aftermarket 25rd mags. Cost me $150 used for all of it.

I'm all of a sudden really tempted to trade my Mossberg 817 for a Savage A17.

I love the caliber. I think .17HMR is awesome. Lots of fun to shoot, and its' a tack driver.

I like my 817, it's a fun little gun, but the idea of a semi-auto .17 sounds like it'd be a whole helluva' lot of fun.

What do you guys think?

Here's my 10/22. Honestly, this is the one rifle everybody should have, although I've always found the sights to be unimpressive. Are there any good rail mounts I can get for mine?

doing a 10/22 build and I've decided on a few parts;

I also need suggestions for budget glass and a barrel.

>>
>>29725572

Didn't semi auto .17HMRs have problems with cases asploding?
>>
>>29727535
I've been hearing mostly good things about the A17. Just some minor issues with magazines not seating quite properly.
>>
>>29724965

I agree with this.

If you like to modify things, the 10/22has such an extensive aftermarket that you could build an entire rifle having never bought a single part from Ruger.
>>
>>29727558

Cool.

I was just speculating. Several years ago there were warnings about something or other with semi .17s. I didn't have one (bolt action here) so I didn't pay it much mind.
>>
>>29727558
I've got a Savage 93, which is basically a bolt action A17. Yeah, the mag does have issues. It seats fine, but you can't have any pressure on it when you work the bolt or it doesn't feed right.

And out of about five hundred rounds I put through it, had one split case. Not sure if it was the ammo or the gun, but came out with a pair of pliers I keep in my range bag.

Oh, and cleaning is a bit difficult. Most accessories are made for nothing smaller than a .22. Had to get a custom head to run a patch down it.

Still, despite the issues, it's a nice gun. Ammo is just a bit more than a .22 lr, and it's a good target/varmint gun.

Not pictured, Harris bipod and new VQ trigger group.

I'm thinking about getting another one, and doing a tacticool build. Hogue or Magpul stock, red dot, standard barrel with tech sights.

How are BX-15 mags?
>>
>>29727675
Well I have a Mossberg 817. But the rifle on a whole is just a bit to small for me. Not a whole lot of clearance between my scope and the bolt handle.

I get some feeding issues on that too. Some times the bolt just won't close on a magazine for whatever reason. I've also had a failure to extract. The case was pretty much stuck in the chamber, would not extract. I had to get a knife to pry it out.

But I know what .17hmr is all about. I know it's a pain in the ass to clean. I love the caliber. I think it's one of the more fun to shoot. I find it more fun that .22lr simply for how hard it hits and how fast it goes. It'd be neat to have a semiauto .17, which has me really considering the trade.
>>
So I've been meaning to get a .22 recently. Have my own AR and CZ85, but had used the family .22 (an old Winchester Model 190) when I wanted to plink. Unfortunately, my cousin stole that (and a really nice .38 Special) so I've been meaning to pick one up.

Long story short, any suggestions? Looking at the 1102 model (18.5" barrel, walnut furniture) with a Simmons 22 Mag sight. I already know not to use the Ruger mount that comes with it for the scope, but any other tips/suggestions?

Cali-bound, unfortunately.

I took out the 817 just to look at it for a minute, and noticed this. I mean, really? It had a very small hairline crack when I first got it. I don't abuse it, I've never dropped it. I know a crack will weaken the surrounding material. But for it to crack that bad just sitting in my dry safe?

Wood cracks when humidity is very low. This is bad for other wooden things, like musical instruments. At the same time humidity is bad for steel.

>>
>>29727922
Ideally, you want to avoid changes in humidity from wet to dry. Wood, when worked, should be very low in moisture. Working green wood then letting it dry will cause cracks.

Stocks should have been put in a killed and brought down to around 10% moisture, if not less.

A dry piece of wood should not have issues in a dry environment as long as there are no rapid changes in humidity.

Dry is relative here. I live in the desert. Unless it's a rainy day, humidity should not really be fluctuating. We have had a lot of rain lately, but I don't think that should stress a stock enough to cause a major crack like that along the grain.

I'm planning on buying a 10/22 as a first gun, but I'm wondering if getting an internally suppressed barrel needs a tax stamp, and if its worth it. Also, what's the best ammo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but doesn't leave the rifle dirty as shit?
>>
>>29728436
yes you need a tax stamp
and if you actually want your silenced gun to be quiet you need subsonic ammo

Great, but only marginally more reliable, compact, and inexpensive than BX25s; may as as well go big.
>>
I respect the 10/22 design for being very reliable, tough, and having a great aftermarket, but I don't find them very satisfying rifles.

My gripes with the 10/22:
>Weird and cheap-feeling bolt release.
>Icky wide plastic trigger.
>Grotesquely obese & ugly aluminum receiver
>The cheaper ones have really shitty plastic stocks with nothing you could call "bedding." If you get a 10/22, get wood or laminate.
>Demented design--don't even think about taking it apart unless you have gunsmith tools (punches), good instructions, and are patient.
>Innards get incredibly filthy, so you NEED to take it apart eventually.
>Action does a cheap-sounding shuffle-rattle with every shot, reminding you that Bill Ruger hates milled steel and designed this rifle to be as cheap as possible to manufacture. He's like the evil alternate universe's version of John Browning, where everything is make of plastic and investment castings.

(Seriously, though, B.Ruger was a great designer in his own right.)

Agreed; the first time I shot my friend's 10/22 I was so incredibly underwhelmed, it just felt like a cheap toy. At least shooting my Mossman 802 Plinkster felt like I was shooting a real gun. I wasn't sure if that was just a problem with semi auto .22s but I've since gotten a Winchester 290 that's pretty fun to shoot. Still prefer manual action .22s though.

Pick up a curernt Savage or and old Marlin 100 to 60 model for the bolt action. Stupidly more accurate when you take out the sliding AK style sloppy bolt from Ruger.
I had to refinish all the parts from my 2012 10/22 Ruger to get it to work with their stock BX-25 mags and not jam on every ammo type.

Check out rimfirecentral.com for all rimfire guns. Lots of sage advice and how to guides.

>>
>>29729485
Several things:
1. Not clean and lubed in the right spots.
2. The BX-25 was made on a Friday at 4:30 PM. Out of spec on top part meeting the magazine well.
3. The magazine release needs a trimming in the right spot to make it fit as tight as the stock 10 round rotary magazine. If the rotary mag feeds the same ammo from the same box, it's the other mag or ejector. See rimfirecentral for the sticky on how to mod.
4. Bolt hanging up on slide, not enough recoil kickback force to load next round. many issues to fix that makes all sorts of ammo power the bolt wrong. Chamfer the bolt, clean out the paint on the inside the receiver. Check for rail mounting screws dragging on the bolt.
5. Is the barrel lined up the the extractor clip on the side of the blot so it full closes with out drag? If that drag slows the bolt on the return, it will be slow on the forward stroke and not strip the ammo from the mag with the right force to put the bullet into the chamber.
>>
>>29729574

Two lasers, one green for 100 yards, one red for 150 yards. The closer one needed to be adjusted a bit. The end of the barrel is threaded, but didn't want a can for what I do with it.

A shotgun, would provide far more consistent killing. As a britcuck, I have no idea how much trouble you'd get in for defending your life, but take whatever legal action you can to mitigate the consequences.
