You don't run out of ammo. The only people I know who ran out of ammo were two Marines caught in an ambush in Iraq. They dropped their weapons and picked up AKs from the enemy they killed. Because weight, a sword is a lot heavier than a knife and you would need to carry a knife anyhow for other things.
Because using a sword to some effect without becoming a danger to yourself and anyone around you takes a lot of practice. A knife is easier to use.

The point tends to be sharp on many variations. Sharp pointy things tend to be fairly deadly, especially when they're short and easily maneuverable. Being able to cut vegetables is an added bonus.
The fact that you are even going to the point of classifying wounds as "ugly but not effective" shows the mental gymnastics you have to go through just to say that a machete is not a short sword, that it is any less valid of a weapon than a Roman gladius.
