I did that early on, but then Workshop came out and I ended up building what are basically skyscrapers that are sealed except for the 4th and 5th floors. The 4th floor usually has about a dozen missile and heavy laser turrets on it and the 5th floor has 3 or 4 artillery pieces. The bottom floor contains the work benches and everything between is sleeping and recreation area.

I fixed it.
In the settlements where I have humans but no real farmland, I build a multi-story concrete flak tower and put their beds in it. At night, when they're all asleep I put a fast travel target in there and delete the doors. Then I assign them all to scavenger benches downstairs and leave.

Pretty sure U.S. never made it to mainland China in the lore. Chinese actually managed to make landfall in Alaska and pushed as far as Anchorage. Battle of Anchorage was the first time power armor was used in combat. I believe the AIs let the nukes fly not long after that.

They did. It's where T-51B was used in combat, before the men using it were brought home from China to help combat riots during the new plague. Like I said before, China was basically a stale mate before T-51B got introduced, and China started tac. Nuking their selves to get rid of power armored divisions. There wasn't even any T-51B in Anchorage, just T-45D and maybe some T51B pre prototype shit.

Also mind you, the Chinese didn't "push" their way to Anchorage. There was an American front line already set up to protect the Alaskan oil pipeline that ran through Canada from Canadian protestor, and you guessed it, the chinks. The chinks landes, secured positions, and started attacking the line. Like in operation anchorage, the american front takes out a bunch of Chinese strategic positions, and moved forward before evemutually grabbing their main command out post.
Also, don't confuse me saying they didn't push into Alaska with "they didn't push the American front line" they did that, but the line held.
Fun fact, after the Americans retook control of Alaska they used it as grounds to station more troops in Canada before eventually annexing it and shooting protectors on sight.

It IS slightly slower than moving on foot, but too unnoticeable for it to be a bother.
The real problem is lower level armor pieces being ridiculously fragile and popping off all the time. Companions are especially bad at this.
