You know, when you got an army to arm but you don't have quite enough modern gadgets so you arm some guys with leftover stuff from previous wars.

This thread is dedicated to that. Pictured here, a group of British soldiers in WW2, armed with spears (made out of pipes with old bayonets welded onto them).

"By late 1940, the Home Guard had amassed 847,000 rifles, 47,000 shotguns and 49,000 machine guns of various kinds. However, as there were more than 1,682,000 volunteers at the time, this meant that 739,000 men were without a weapon. There was little improvement in June 1941 when Churchill wrote to the War Office saying that "every man must have a weapon of some sort, be it only a mace or a pike." The civil servants took Churchill at his word and ordered 250,000 pikes from the Ministry of Aircraft Production, each consisting of a long steel tube with an obsolete bayonet welded to the end."
>>
>>29682580
Christ, wonder if he was being sarcastic and they just took him at his word.
Curious as to where they got the shotguns from and what they were. Old lend lease winchesters from WW I or just a hardware store double barrel.
>>
>>29682681
>Curious as to where they got the shotguns from and what they were.
Shotguns were common as fuck back then and there were loads of companies in the UK that made them for generations prior to WW2, there would have been lots of farm tier double barrel guns around.

I think there were pretty much unregulated, or if there was regulation it was like going to the local post office and buying a little slip of paper to keep in your wallet.
>>
You can see pics of fighters in africa using WW2 equipment to this day, sometimes even older relics from WW1, stuff so valuable that could buy their boat ticket to yurop if they could find the right buyer. I think I saw a nig once with a Gewehr98, not even the karabiner.

>Both times

Okay well that's a defendable position for WW2, but if you think America saved anybody in WW1 you are retarded. The Americans were only actually fighting for like three months, from a military standpoint the war was still a stalemate and didn't show any signs of ending soon. It only stopped because there was change of government in Germany and the new bosses wanted to end the war.
>>
>>29700888
>I've done no research.
>Battle of the Bulge didn't happen and had no consequences
C'mon, man. Give Americans credit where credit is due. You got an eternal war going on, where nobody moves a mile for YEARS. Americans show up and 3 months later, the whole war is over.

Then you tell us Americans didn't do shit?

I call bullshit. Bull. Shit.
>>
>>29700925
>Battle of the Bulge
Shit, that was WW2, Battle of St Quentin Canal was WW1
>>
>>29700925

The fact that they were only fighting for three months is evidence against the Americans having a significant impact on the war. A four year old stalemate doesn't turn into a whirlwind victory in three months. This is especially true since the Russians had pulled out of the war and the Germans now only had to focus on the Western front. So I suppose that the Americans "saved" the Entente in that they stopped the Germans from gaining an edge (which likely wouldn't have been enough to tip the scales anyway). If anything the Germans still had an advantage since the troops that they transferred from the Eastern front to the West would have been hardened veterans while the Americans would have been green recruits. The most you can say about American involvement in WW1 is that they helped the stalemate last until internal turmoil caused Germany to lose the war.
>>
>>29697532

All of the ammo is still made commercially.

People often forget that many STG's are not really Germany, but post-war Yugo/Czech builds on captured equipment to export to Africa/Middle East for cash to rebuild.

Jesus please stop. the bait is too real.

I do not want to indulge it but i just want to clarify. The spears where defensive tools used by the home guard and other units of the "british armed forces" that where unable to join the regular army. Supplies where short for the first few years of the war and until the mass introduction of the sten gun the british had no easily manufacturable and cheap weapons. "make do and mend" became the mindset and thus the spear was brought into service.
>>

Guns were actually pretty common in the UK until the 1970's.

They were even more common before WW1.

The whole "millions dead" kind of fucked with public opinion of guns despite most deaths in WW1 being due to artillery or gas.

>from a military standpoint the war was still a stalemate and didn't show any signs of ending soon

not actually accurate, the war was coming to a end, the germans were exhausted, running out of money and material and the allies were marginally less exhausted and had figured out at last that tanks plus creeping barrage plus well trained infatry could and would punch out any trench defense ever created and proceeded to demonstrate this in the hundred days offensive, inflicting heavy defeats on the germans and punching out the hindeburg line along a massive section of its length, the resultant collapse in morale triggered the change in government and the further collapse of the german army.

>The fact that they were only fighting for three months is evidence against the Americans having a significant impact on the war.

in actual military terms they didnt contribute much before the germans surrendered, in the period in which they were fighting they were probably the least effective although most enthusiastic of the allies, the meuse argonne offensive costing more lives at for less gain than the great push of the anglo french armies further north.

their primary effect was to hammer home the unsalvageable position of the germans in that the german high command had to face the fact that not only could they now not expect their front to hold anywhere short of the rhine, but the allies would have effectively unlimited manpower

a homeguard unit, almost none of which were actually issued with spears, and those few who were were not in areas likely to be invaded and were issued with rifles shortly thereafter.

the majority of the homeguard were issued with old ww1 era SMLEs, and other rifles, the pikes being meant as a morale boost for troops still waiting for a weapon.

that said the homguard did have a rather odd hodgepodge of improvised weapons
