Alright, guys.

We know that the 69 grain RAS 5.45 was utter crap.

Anyone know anything about the 60 grain stuff they seem to have switched to?
>>
>>29601122
promags work as well as plastic mags can, the steel that's on it is a weiger but whomever did the modifying did a better job than i could ever do. still for a rifle that's as old as i am, it's quite nice.
>>
>>29600942
The question was more or less about grabbing any 5.45 AK next as opposed to a 7.62 AK. With an SKS in the 7.62x39 slot atm, is an AK in the same caliber still something I should be looking to buy "soon"? I generally like to cover my calibers first before getting multiples of the same role/caliber

How many magazines is enough?

I'm currently sitting on 11 black ((10)) mags, 6 shiny plum Izhmash mags, 5 matte plum Izhmash mags, and one shiny plum Tula mag for a grand total of 23. I had about a half dozed brown ((21))s but I sold them because I think they're ugly with my rifle.

I'll pick up some bakes eventually but IMO bakelite mags are ugly with plum furniture.

I've shot my friend's AK 74 he built and I have to say the recoil of 5.45 is quite laughable. Are you willing to spend the extra dosh on 74 mags? Then go balls out and get a 5.45 AK. It's an enjoyable plinking gun, and in the unlikely event Russia decides to start shit, you can just pick up mags and parts.
>>29601298
>How many magazines is enough?
There's never enough magazines.
>a grand total of 23
I say that's a good collection of mags, I'd pick up 7 more just to make an even thirty, or 17 more if you're up for it. Hell, I have 18 mags for my AR and I want more.
>>
>>29601403
I mean I'm still going to be buying more but I think I'm at the point where only like six mags I currently have are near mint while the rest show use and will continue to be the mags I actually use so from now on the only mags I'll be buying will probably be in near mint/NOS condition just for some nice looking mags.

For a while I was buying nearly every black (10) and Russian plum that popped up on AKfiles in decent shape for less than $30, but I think I've got enough cheap yet still in nice shape mags.

Hey /akg/, Califag here. Found a good deal on an unmolested .223 Saiga sporter. While I don't plan on doing a full conversion while I live in this state, I have been thinking about maybe replacing the hammer spring with that JTE offering that Carolina Shooter Supply sells, to help alleviate the trigger situation.

Is it honestly required to drill out the two rear rivets before you can break down the trigger group on the Saigas? And is there a screw set available to be able to fill in the holes those drilled out pins leave behind?

7.62x39 is a fantastic CQB round. House to house, urban/suburban environments, thick cover. 7.62 with select ammo is devestating per intermediate cartridge. It's still in use with Russian special forces for a reason; hard hitting bare knuckle brawler of an intermediate.

Arming a nation defense force, sure smaller faster flatter. If I'm marauding on some preppers jerky stash in a development, gibmedat AK-103

I've been out of the AK market for a while since the Navy had me in Cuckifornia, but I'm looking for a new one.
I want it to be 7.62x39 with a folding stock. A side folder would be preferred but I honestly just figured I'd get a Polish underfolder assuming those are still a good deal.

Would my SLR look weird if I kept the black folding stock but swapped out the handguards for some Russian plum?
>>
>>29604894
>Would my SLR look weird
yes, not 10/10 weird, but weird
>>
>>29604864
Because the overhead tooling required to build one up to snuff would be much too expensive to be marketable. They can crank out WASRs all day on machinary thats already paid at a price point American companies could never compete with.

America could build the best AK ever, at $2500+

>durr AK slavaboo cheap
>>
>>29604818
>price
>just send it back and they'll make it not shit
I mean I'd be okay with that but yeah I figured IO was still shit.
>>29604826
I was just looking at those on Atlantic.

Also does anyone know about the Khyber Pass series they're selling on Atlantic? They look almost literally perfect (although I'd prefer a 74 style brake it's whatever) but I have no idea who makes them outside of that it says Polish parts kits
>>
>>29604864
>rifle is mostly shit
>but that barrel is good

Sooo... At least Century can make some good barrels, if they use softer steel for the sight equipment it might hold together as well.
>>
>>29604894
Yes.
>>
>>29604894

>>
>>29604942
>just send it back and they'll make it not shit

They don't have the capacity to make it not shit. IO is a terrible company.
>>
>>29604916
You realize DDI is coming out with their 100% US made AK with the proper non-cast trunnions and bolts for like $700 right? It's completely possible, it just takes time and money to do a bit of engineering.

alright though no IO, any input on the "khyber pass" AKs they're selling? I want this.
>>
>>29605095
No, I mean that IO literally is not able to make guns that aren't shit. Sure, they replaced the first one but the replacement is just another AK shaped turd that still has a pretty good chance of exploding.

US AK barrels have always been soft shit for the last 10 years afaik.

Sorry, meant to say khyber pass builds are generally pretty solid.
>>29605187
>>29605198
See above. I don't think I've seen a shitty company make one. Judging from the other guys picture, it looks like one of the build for Atlantic which I've heard are pretty great.
>>
>>29605182
>>29604945
Just because the barrels aren't fucking after a few thousand rounds doesn't mean they're good. Military AK barrels, you know, the proper CHF Chromelined ones, last 15-20k rounds.
>>
>>29605209
Honestly though how hard would it be for me to just build an AK? I don't know shit about machining and I don't have a lot of fancy tools and shit, but if I were to get a parts kit, a barrel, and one of the Khyber pass sidefolder receivers (and an AKS-74 style stock, of course) what all would it take to put it together?
>>
I don't care how good the alloys are or the machcining. A US company that the market potential to support copying an aging eastern design is just curious to me.

Think if they spent all that money on utilizing the basic AK design principles and attempting to modernize it. Or a ground up design.

DDI is a meme, of Yeager tier
>>
>>29605231
You'd need about $200 in jigs, a drill press, a 20 ton press, a steady hand, a spot welder, and a lot of patience.
>>
>>29605260

>>
>>29605260
A bit less cost and no need for a spot welder if he uses a pre-built 100% receiver.

ak-builder has khyber kits with barrels already installed

kits aren't hard to build but you need the proper tools
>>
>>29605266
For a kit with barrel headspaced and pressed and pinned into the front trunnion, you will have to press the barrel pin out, then press the barrel out.

then, assuming the barrel components are pressed and pinned on, you will have to rivet the front trunnion to the receiver while the barrel is still out. Then press the barrel back in, then press the barrel pin back in.

Rear trunnion will need to be riveted too.

You will probably have a hard time drilling the rivet holes in the right spot.
You will need to buy an AK-builder rivet jig for doing it the right way.

It's a bit of an investment.
>>
>>29605266
Nope. You have to press out the barrel, install the front trunnion in the receiver, and press the barrel back in, and confirm headspace
>>
>>29605292
and after all of this you will need to rivet the trigger guard too.

completing an 80% receiver is a lot of bullshit too.
>>
Has anyone tried the new Texas Weapon Systems top cover rail?

Is it sturdy and does it hold a zero?
>>
There's so many of you being helpful (amazing considering I'd expect day/k/are normally) I don't know who to reply to.
Basically what you are telling me is that I'll have to buy a lot of tools I may use again one day and it's going to be a lot of work and I can't just put shit together like an AR, though, right?
what would it cost to just have a gunsmith do it for me? It's looking like my total for parts would be around $600, so assuming they're not going to dick me around on price that would be a better deal than getting the built one, right?

Yes. Also a gunsmith (make sure to get one that specifically advertises themselves as building AK's and see some of their work first) will run you $300-$450 depending on how much has to be done, plus another $150-200 for a proper finish.

"no". They're not designed like the actual AK-74 ones. Get an Arsenal made one and an adapter.

Seeing as that Khyber build on Atlantic is out of stock and doesn't have a proper finish anyway it would be pretty much the same price, but I'd be getting a rifle exactly as I want it. Right?
of course I can't find any shops that advertise building AKs in Boise, ID kek

>>
>>29605408
"No". They do parkerizing for a reason you faggot.
>>
>>29605252
Then you run into the special snowflake problem.

Besides, by that measure, the AR15 is also an aging design. Six times as much time has passed from the design of the AK to the AR to now. The AR has been modernized as has the AK.

We stick with these designs because parts wear out or break. Never underestimate the power of parts commonality.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geRY34xvYlI
>>
>>29605433
I'll have to reserve judgement until I get the opportunity to shoot one. Sadly this is probably the future of the design in America. It will be interesting to see if it has the Eastern philosophy magic that the old school rifles have.
>>
>>29605368
I just called a shop that my normal gun shop recommended to me for AK building and they quoted me $250 tops for building and reparkerizing.
I'm looking at about $800 tops for my build including side rail and K-Var picatinny mount and Arsenal 74 style brake.
do I do it??
>>
>>29605776
Wow, that's super cheap. I'd go ahead and get an exact quote, sometimes they add extra shit for things like populating the barrels and stuff. Mind me asking what shop?
>>
>>29605837

>>29605850
I'd suggest you wait on the optics and stuff until you have your rifle built. Man I'm also honestly a bit jealous that you have a local AK builder, here in Kansas I can't seem to find a single one.
>>
>>29605884
They're really poorly advertised as AK builders, but according to my usual shop they do a lot of them, and based on how the guy knew more about the parts kit that I was looking at than I did I'm going to assume he's good.
And you're probably right. I'll just have him put on the side rail for now.

Hey /akg/,

Recently a thread popped up and I was reading through it and they talked about headspacing issues on Arsenal SLR104's. Apparently there is an issue with any SLR that has a small hole where the dust cover doesn't meet the receiver properly. I took off my charging handle and looked through and could see directly through it.

I've shot my rifle and didnt have any problems before I even found out that is a problem. My question is, will it be a problem down the road?

General question for anyone knowledgeable:
I live in California, and as such am limited on the guns I can purchase. A few years ago the Arsenal SLR and SGL series were banned by name, which was a huge bummer for me because I really love the look of the AK-103 and had decided on an AK-103 clone for my first AK.

I still want one as my first AK, and the way I see it I have two options: find a Saiga and convert it or buy something like this - the Russian RAK from Atlantic.

I know it's essentially a converted Saiga, but I figure the cost and time needed to order and fit all the parts together will end up equaling the cost of this rifle - especially with the cost of bare Saiga rifles now. It has a 90 degree gas block and the smooth receiver cover as well.

My question is how converted is this rifle and how hard would it be to remove the chrome/nickel finish from the bolt. I HATE the shiny finish on the bolt because it's a Saiga and a bizarrely converted one at that. Does it have a shitty bolt-on handguard retainer or is it done properly?

Sorry for the long-winded post,
>>
I've got $90 in my paypal account to spend in the AKfiles marketplace

It was an earlier import 20" with the typical U shaped wood single piece hand guard and thumb hole stock without a threaded muzzle. I paid around $500 for it and sold it for $800 after the Russian sanctions and after it was announced that only KC imports were banned and VEPRs were still able to come in.

When the sanctions were announced I planned on just sitting on it and watch its value rise but when news came that MOLOT could still import VEPRs I shot the shit out of it before selling it

It was a great rifle but i sold it because I already had an FAL that i enjoyed more and that easier to find and cheaper parts and mags.
