Looking to buy my first EDC knife, what are good suggestions? I'm currently looking at the Kershaw Leek and the Kershaw CQC - 6K. Any thoughts on what I should get?

Might I add that my budget is quite low, stay as low as you can.

The leek is nice; I carry one.
Blade takes an easy edge, sharp out of the box, and you can keep it like a razor if you know your way around a stone. Edge retention isn't god-tier, just adequate.

Feels very satisfying in the hand, and has a positive spring open. Just remove the safety... it's shit. It will either break off, or bind the knife when you didn't engage it.

It's a modified wharncliffe... keep in mind that the point is VERY fine, and damages easily. I'm a serious wharncliffe fanboy, so I love it. (Pick related; first attempt at a handmade.)

My wife has a CQC-6K.
Kind of fun flipping it open out of the pocket, but it takes a bit of practice. It's rather tight to push open with the thumb studs, but doable. Doesn't really open any quicker than the assisted flippers like the leek, but it's probably legal in a few more shit states... Same steel as the Leek, if I recall.

The 6K is THICK. Seriously chunky compared to the Leek. Not uncomfortable in the hand, but you'll really notice it in a pair of jeans.

Blade geometry is more normal...

Really just comes down to whether you want a flipper, or an Emerson Wave feature. Both are fine knives.
>>
Spyderco delica is around that price range and is exellent.

Opinel no8 if price is key. and you don't mind traditional. Also mine takes a razor edge with ease.

The leek is ok

Inexpensive kershaws are mostly shit. in my experience

Avoid crkt SOG and Gerber like the fucking plague
>>
>>29575683
Some of CRKT, Gerber and SOG's knives are alright. Just takes a little practice to pick out a decent deal.

Love my CRKT SPEW.
Anything by Ken Onion is decent; doesn't seem to matter who's manufacturing.

Agreed on the very cheap Kershaws, though.
That said, I've got a $10 Drone that I love. Steel isn't great, but it feels good in the hand.

Kershaw Cryo isn't bad, either, if you want something with an even springier spring than the Leek, and a more traditional blade shape. Similarly thin, as well.
>>

>>29575683
First time I hear this about cheap Kershaws, from the reviews I've seen, Leeks are amazing. Plus the price fits and I like how they look.

You could take a look at some ganzos.also cqc6k cant be worn with dress pants.take that as you will.

I spent like 22 on it. Free shipping cause I have amazon prime. Plus aus 8 is a pretty decent budget steel.
>>
>>29575750

I own a Kershaw Link Blackwash nd a Thermite and they are amazing. The Link is US-made and aesthetically awesome as well as ergonomic.
The Thermite is like a China-manufactured ZT 0566 and has a really quality feel to it in your hand. These knives just have mid-grade normie-steel. They really give the Spyderco Tenacious a run for its money in the sub-$50 category

ganzos use 440 steel which is not ideal for EDC in my humble opinion. karshaw's and spiderco's cr13mov is much better. SOG's aus8 is better yet but not my much. if you will never sharpen your knife then it doesn't matter much. eventually it will get dull and no matter what steel you have it will suck.

all that aside for cheapish knives I would go with kershaw volt2 because I like the design. I have the SS version (stainless steel handle instead of G10). I polished the hell out of it to make it unique.

in pic I got SOG twitch2, kershaw volt2 SS, ZT 0560BW, random COAST cheapie, kershaw cyro and an ontario rat 2.

>>
>>29576085
Yeah full deep carry, and it's reversible (dono why cause the closing operation is made for a righty)
Honestly though, the pocket clip is my very favorite feature of this knife. It's made from the same steel as the blade and has a retention like iv never had before. I could dangle by my ankles and it would never leave my pocket.

The one hand open is pretty satisfying too.

Same steel buck always uses, 420HC.
One of the most corrosion resistant stainless there is. But it has the high carbon count to make up for the drawbacks of stainless over carbon steel. Plus bucks heat treatment meathod.

The folder is a Vantage make, but I have a 119 too as my fixed blade carry.

but if OP wants expensive designs for cheap he should look into ganzos which creates cheap steel knockoffs of a lot of popular designs. if your not a steel snob yet its a good choice.

SOG and CRKT make nice sub $100 EDC folders with solid locks. The "tactical" ones have the bigger blades generally

Try the ontario RATs

great budget knives

the mini M16 CRKTS are also a perfect knife for even a shirt pocket if need be. so nimble.

Currently I use a CRKT minimalist bowie
horizontal carry on the belt
>>
>>29576464
>can be used in self defense if needed
then grip system is important. you don't want something that will slip. finger choils, jimping, handle material and shape all play a roll. I would want a leek for a tactical POU for instance, the volt SS would be good because it has a choil and a very grippy handle along with a longer blade.
something to consider. in the end go by what you think looks good.
>>
>>29576391
still a tip off of the leek. ken makes a lot of unique designs (I own a few) this was basically giving the leek to CRKT IMO.
>>
>>29576557
would not want a leek for tactical*** not a grippy handle at all and very little jimping with no choil to stop your hand from sliding onto the blade. also its small for most people's hands.
>>
>>29576587
What do you think of this one? I was thinking about saving up or getting this as a gift.

>>29576587
Also, could it be possible to find a custom rubber grip (or something of the sort) that I could attach to the leek myself to make it more ergonomic?
>>

I'm looking for more of a curved blade, something like the chris reeve's sabenza (sadly it's way too expensive) and this is why I like the cqc 6k, but after hearing some poor reviews I think i'll change my mind. Here's what I value in order from greatest to least:

Design/Blade Shape
Draw Speed
Grip (self defense)
Color (I'll take silver or black though)
>>
>>29575922
Its basicaly 8cr13 anyway ,with treatmenton par with kershaws.also 440 is a great steel is properly treated for example like the one buck uses.its qualities become similar to 154cm.

Ive just bought this for my birthday present a few months ago, really fun little knife, heavy too, which I like, since im a habitual pocket patter. The blade is kind of a bitch to sharpen, but I just take a steel or stone to each surface(curved or flat) instead of one fluid motion. The thumb studs are kinda meh, but work alright, and the assisted is a nice touch. Overall its kinda weeby and probably looked down on by people who know steel and knives and shit, but, im not one of those people. I think it was mid $30s and worth every cent. Really fun unique knife. 8/10.

Though, if my CRKT does let me down, I do plan on replacing it with a ZT 0350ST or 0350TSST.

looks good but if that's your budget you have a lot of options. check out the ZT 0560, IMO a very good tactical folder.

>>29576717
not sure, you could use hokey tape or grip tape they sell for pistol grips but IMO the leek handle is too small for proper tactical use. I have big hands though so maybe it would work for you. the lack of a choil you can't fix but you could add better jimping with a dremel.
>>
>>29585095
>ZT 0350
I have owned the ZT 0350 and I have to say it did not live up to expectation. too wide, too blocky so it wasn't comfortable to grip, thumb stud not my favorite, overall meh. super good quality though. I sent it back and got a 0560 and never looked back. the machined handle scales make it insanely comfortable to hold.

there is a similar knife, a little smaller and without the nice machining that rounds out the handle, ZT 0566.
