For me, the aircraft aren't advanced enough to be "exciting" yet. It's interesting, don't get me wrong, but not in the same way as later air conflicts.
It finds itself in an awkward position. It's too modern to be appealing in a Napoleonic-wars kind of way, but too outdated to be appealing in a nearly-modern (WW2, Korea) or modern (Vietnam onwards) way.
Unlike WW2, it's also trumped up less as "Here's a heroic fight against the very archetype of evil" and more "...Well that was a pretty senseless waste of life which didn't achieve anything whatsoever and ended with pissing off Germany so much it started the heroic good war instead of another of these disasters."

Not really. Generally when you look at it, Imperial Germany was a "normal" country while Nazi-Germany is far easier to personify as evil.

The first units deployed in the war were british in Iraq - not for empires, monarchies and nationalism but the trade monopoly on oil.
WW2 on the other hand was simply an extension of the first because the germans weren´t going to just take it and tried in a last ditch effort to not fall behind the other empires for all eternity...
