What if we gave it a bunch of huge guns and rocket pods and bombs and stuff
>>
Then it'd have a bunch of bombs and rocket pods and stuff.

But it's kind of expensive for that. It has inherent advantages (speed and range) for transport that don't carry over to the CAS role as well.
>>
wouldn't a chinook work better for an attack cargo chopper thing?
>>
What if we made it BIGGER
>>

Like Mi-26'd it?

gunship ospreys could escort transport ospreys.

the osprey is too fast and long legged to be escorted by helicopters. fixed wing escort can't hover or fly slowly to guard a LZ.

We halo now?

Been there, done that.
>>
>>29530366
Gunship ospreys have been tried and failed. They are possible, but you just end up with an inferior gunship. The issue is that with a full load of ordnance, you cant carry cargo. Same thing they ran into with the Hind, where a full combat load means they cant carry a full cabin of troopers.
>>
>>29530366
Ospreys with weapons would be neat for ASW duty. Full sized ASW planes on every destroyer for the win.
>>
You'd end up with a gunship that is too heavy to hover or be VTOL
So you just buy an aircraft for the same thing

Also gunships without armor are pretty shitty
>>
>>29530422
that's the point. you make the Osprey into dedicated gunship.
>>
>>29530456
don't go over the weight max for hover.

Osprey can SToVL in a really short distance.
>>
>>29530400
I like the idea of a grenade launcher
>>
>>29530481
Weight max for hover is under 5000 lbs
At sea level
With a full load of fuel

You start going up in altitude like in afghanistan, and it simply cannot physically hover.

It would make an awful gunship.
>>
weight, hover, no troop capacity with munitions, armor

these are not the main problems.

the main problems are those two giant proptors. any wing hard point mounted weapon would have to drop straight down before flying forward. So it clears the proptors.
>>
>>29530533
How does a vehicle with two sexy gigantic props have such a small maximum weight?
>>
>>29528745
>how to fuck up CoM and CoL
>>
>>29530561
choppers have really big rotors for a reason
>>
>>29530561
Because its a shitty abortion of the bastard love child of the worst compromises between fw and helicopter aircraft. It exists because 'muh congressional pork' and because the marines have to ruin fucking everything.
>>
>>29530618
It exists because of the cluster fuck that was the failed Iran Hostage Rescue.
>>
>>29530618
but hey it looks cool
>>
>>29530632
that was only a clusterfuck because the marines insisted on being part
and their helicopters & pilots didn't know how to do aerial refueling

Probably wouldn't have worked anyways because choppering in light infantry is a recipe for getting lots of people killed
>>
>>29530561
Because the Osprey is really good at one very specific thing (quickly transporting small groups to and from hot and/or otherwise inaccessible LZs), and absolute shit at everything else. It's really more of a proof of concept than anything else, and consequently it's unlikely any successor would get development funding any time soon.

I did air assault missions in Iraq. No one died, except the hadjis.

>and no, I wasn't a grunt. I was the commo guy following them around.
>>
>>29531070
air assault on a handful of insurgents is a little diff from air assault into the middle of tehran
>>
>>29531147
during the revoltuion, not really that different
>>
>>29531147
While I'm of the opinion that combat drops are obsolete I don't think the same can be fairly said for air assault. In helicopters you can fly much lower to avoid radar and other IAD and then immediately land. Compare that to a C-130 that carries dozens of troops and has to fly at the same altitude and speed when dropping them.
>>
>>29528745
Unless you're mounting them underneath it, where do you mount this 'bunch of huge guns and rocket pods and bombs and stuff' ?
>>
>>29531301
In a detachable gunpod on the belly
We'll have to put the gears on stilts though, for clearance

>>
>>29533678
This is true.
My dad volunteered for Vietnam at 17, got bored with the patrols and ended up volunteering for door gunner.

He always says how much fun he had hanging out the side of a chopper shooting gooks with an M60 flying at treetop heights.
Never crashed, but he ended up with a silver star, bronze star and 3 purple hearts.
