I am from MD too and have never heard of this being enforced. You can easily claim any rifle that you own now to have been purchased through private sale prior to the ban and was therefore grandfathered in. If you are really in a world of shit they may start investigating serial numbers but you would really have to piss someone off for them to go that far.
I honestly don't mess with shady deals like this however. I begrudgingly accept my SKS as the only slavshit that I will own. I occasionally see honeypots on armslist where someone will make a listing for a banned firearm and suggest in the ad that you meat him at the local police station.
