After MH17 why aren't commercial planes fitted with at least one CIWS and some flares when flying over dangerous zones (the middle East or Ukraine/Egypt)?

can confirm i'm a 747 gunner.
i shoot out of a little room in the tail. there's a microwave and a little tv. it's not so glamorous but it's a job

So are you lucky enough to get the 20mm Vulcan and radar fire control or are you the unlucky sod stuck with the O/U shotgun?
>>
This has got to be one of the stupidest treads i've seen. And that includes the one with "if the ammo comes out the side of the rifle when i shoot, what happens to the bullet"-tread a while back.

why do you need a cannon on a plane anyway

what if you accidental fire when you're parked at the airport

just throw some rocks or something. A rock going fast enough (and it would be) out the back of a plane should be enough to take out anything following you
>>
They wouldn't need a close in weapons system or flares if they didn't fly through a fucking warzone. Precautions could have been taken.

Liability law.

If they did that and then a plane went down anyway, someones family would sue, and their lawyers would say that the precautions taken show that the airline knew there was a risk...
>>
CIWS are shit, better to fit an 8-cell VLS with anti-missile missiles
>>
>>29510925
El Al planes have flares and launch detection for a while

not sure if they have DIRCM yet
>>
>>29510943

Nice, I work part time in the ball turret on a A380. It's a great view, but the turret gets cramped after a couple hours. I wish I had a microwave.

It was installed after el kaida tried to shoot down Israeli planes in Africa.

Because that's not going to do shit to a fucking titanic Soviet anti-bomber missile
>>
>>29510943
That's awesome, I used to have that posting until I was transferred to a 737 belly gun. The belly posting is shit, it's cold, cramped and we're stuck with a pair of old .50 cals.

I wish I was an FCO.
>>
>>29510943
do you guys still fly with the armed cessna escorts or does having a tailgunner negate that?
>>
>>29515633

chaff will somewhat protect you.
>>
>>29510925
was in afghanistan. the commercial cargo planes, and transport plants have a rigged up chaff/ flare system on them. Depedning on the company its either really nice, or really shitty, but the operation principals are the same. Make a pod, fit it with chaff/ flare dispensers, and a surplus helicopter RWR/IR detector. If you get lit up, or think you are lit up, a shitty little warning in the cockpit starts going off. Now again, depending on how shitty or how good it is, its either manual or automatic.

Case in point.

DHL jets were shit. Every...FUCKING...time they took off out of Bagram, they would pop flares all over the fucking runway. every fucking time. Fodwalk thereafter.

Weird russian brand jet, can differentiate between base radar, and a manpad.

Yes, if the missile being fired at you is complete shit.
>>
It is cheaper just to re route around trouble spots.

Aeroflot planes (IL76) have a tail gunner. El Al have counter measures. You can order an airforce one protection kit(two generations old) from boing.
>>
>>29510925
They don't suppose to fly in dangerous zones in first place.

This. CIWS is the the type of weapon that'll fail on you in your actual time of need. Hell, Sea Sparrows could do it.
>>
>>29520447
Yes, lets assume its always an F22 with the latest missiles trying to take down your airliner. Nobody ever uses older weapons. Defense buildings should focus on being railgun resistant.
>>
>>29515633
All aircraft need a DAS suite then.....

negros, no amount of chaff (that you could load on a plane) is going to protect a commercial airliner sized target against radar guided missiles
>fuckhueg primary radar return
>no low observability technology ("""stealth""") used
>unable to do evasive maneuvers

also >>29515633
>2-4 massive turbofan engines
>engines widely spaced apart
>long ass body & wings for the seeker to lock onto if the missile SOMEHOW manages to loose sight of the engine exhausts (which themselves alone are large enough to guide the missile)
>again, no effort made to reduce IR signature
the missiles wont even see the flares

the whole point of countermeasures is NOT flying a straight line after deploying them, because thats where the missile is going to look for you

that being said, >>29510943 best job after being the pilot
>>
>>29524938
>>has no idea what he is talking about
>>29522534
to elaborate on that, most any sarh or arh missile that was developped after, well lets be generous and say 1970, is probably able to hit an airliner, even if it shat chaff and flares all over the sky
>>
most airlines don't like the idea of having fire hazards on their planes
