There's a recent acquisitions thread but no thread to talk about what you're planning on getting next. Post what you want, ask questions to figure out what you want, rate each others taste, make suggestions, whatever.

Currently saving up for a post 2013 Marlin 1895GBL (pic related) with XS Leverail Ghost Ring sights, and some sort of Leopold glass. I was thinking a FX Scout 2x or 4x (dad's recommendation) on raised rings so I can still use the XS irons, but I think I'd prefer a variable sight.

Trying to keep it all around $1000-1200, looking at $650-700 for the gun and irons/rails, but when it comes to glass and rings I'm not the most informed. I was looking at Leupold V3i series but any suggestions are more than welcome.

On a finishing note this is not a dream gun thread and I'm sorry if the image is low quality, it hard to find pictures of the 1895GBL.

I want to buy a 10/22 and put a new chassis on it. I've been looking at all of Archangel's shit, but I don't want to make it look like a G36 or anything stupid like that; I want a target rifle. Anyone have experience with pic related?

You need patience. In time it will eventually fall into your lap. It took a couple years for a good deal BFR to finally show up. I had just bought a '71 Bronco a couple days earlier and debated for a moment if I wanted to spend even more money but figured I would regret it if I did not pick it up.

I want a general hunting and trail gun. 6+1 capacity and able to take down pretty much any game on Earth makes me much better when backpacking in moose and bear country. My eyes aren't the best which is why I'd prefer a variable zoom scope for use when hunting deer and other medium to large game while the riser rings let me use the irons in case of a bear or moose charging.
>>
>>29509894
Fair enough.

Forgot to mention 19th century buffalo hunters used to effectively take buffalo out to 1000yd with 45/70 rifles equip with ladder sights. If they can take buffalo with iron ladder sights and black powder loads I have no doubt I can take game much further than the standard 100-200yd 45/70 hunting range by using modern loads and gauging range properly.

I was going to buy a second hand 45-70 at a gun show a few weeks ago. I was hoping for a big-loop leaver like the one in the pic. Instead I round a slightly rusted all-matching Jungle Carbine instead for what is in Australia a bargain.

Now I'm waiting for the coppers to rubber-stamp the paperwork.
>>

They're $539.99 at Bud's Gun Shop or whatever it's called. No clue if it's a good place to buy from or not, I've always bought my guns in person but the price seems good. I'd want to make sure it was a model made after August 2013 as the modern ones prior to that had horrible quality control. How much was the one you saw at the show?

i turned 18 just before Aroura
got my first job just before the zimzam trials started up
saved up for a cmp garand just before they temporarily sold out.
then quit said job just before prices went semi normal.
then the college prof i was going to buy a pistol from and be range buddies with got fired for offending an sjw coworker (hes an ex cop, she supports BLM)
get new job just before elections and next wave of gun control bullshit in 2014
business closes and lose job just before things calm down again.

and now, finally get enough spare change im comfortable buying that cmp garand, and my cars timing belt snaps and creates a $1500 repair fee. so no garand once again.

I'm debating whether or not to get a single action combo for my car. Or get a lever action in .fuddy-fuddy. OR get an AR/AK

All this up for debate and i still can't find a place to hunt in North Texas. I don't even know if i can take deer/hog with what i have right now and it kinda depresses me.

I don't mean to be counter productive here or to go making assumptions without knowing much about you, but you may want to reconsider your choice to buy a garand. I love milsurp but if $1500 is a make or break expense for you an 800 dollar rifle in a full power cartridge may not be the right choice. Each clip will cost you at least 4 dollars so it would be really easy to go through 50 dollars in ammo in just one hour. There's also the issue of shooting modern ammo and using a gas plug.

An SKS may be a better choice. It's far more available and the rifle and ammo costs half of the garand and 30 06. There's also a lot less that can go wrong whereas you are depending on an aftermarket gas plug to use the garand. It has roughly the same feeling as a milled steel and straight wooden stock gun. Try looking for a Yugo m59. It doesn't have a glossy finish and feels like an honest bare bones milsurp rifle that you can use without worry.

Just a thought

.t mechanic
>>
>>29511490
Depending on how the engine in his vehicle was designed, when the belt failed, it COULD have eaten the engine internals. Interference engines have this problem because they're designed so that the valves cannot be fully open with the piston at top dead center, other engines CAN do that and it's sort of a safety for the motor.

http://www.americanrifleman.org/articles/2015/4/28/dress-up-your-ruger-1022-takedown-rifle/

If you shop around especially on amazon, you can complete this whole look for about 230 bucks. The most expensive part is the mags and optics.

I recommend the speed loader kit, its pricey but it makes shooting 10/22 so fun.

Marlin Guide Gun is on my "to get" list. Compact enough for the brush country, but with 45-70 I don't ever have to worry about Bears or boars. My only concern is that it might be too uncomfortable to shoot, as I've heard some horror stories. I'm a fairly average sized guy (5'10 and 165) so im curious about whether the 336 would be more practical for someone of my stature. Anybody got any experience with this one?
>>

You could always get a Henry in .44 Magnum or .45 Colt. Should be more than enough to help you finish off a bear or boar while having almost unnoticeable recoil given you'd be firing it from a rifle.

I'm buying a Hakim next. Best milsurp rifle I can get in commiefornia at the moment. Before they ban it. Anyone have any good links for noncorrosive reloadable ammo I can use in it that comes in bulk? I can only find ex-Romanian m75 sniper ammo and apparently it's corrosive.
>>
>>29509859
Don't pay this redguard no mind. It all comes down to what you out of the gun. The Hogue overmold is great if you want a field gun. The Archangel will make for a better bench rifle with it's adjustable LoP and comb height.
>For me I started with the Hogue on the 10/22 tactical target. I wanted an accurate, cheap to run tactical trainer that I could mount my premium optics from my big guns on. So I dropped mine into a Troy T22 chassis. It is heavy but works great for my needs.

Go with the 20 inch, it's the best overall length to projectile fps ratio. The 16 inch loses a couple hundred fps compared to the 20, and the 23 only gets you about 80 fps more. The manual lists the 20 inch model as the standard variant and states that it only exhibits acceptable accuracy out to 300 m. My average of 1.5 to 2 MOA supports this effective range. Also, the new issued dragunovs for the Russian military are 20 inch models so I imagine they're onto something.

>>29513354
I own a hakim and the ammo situation can be dicey. There's some decent steel case ammo available for 50 cents per round or good reloadable brass that costs a dollar. PPU ammo is good, I have some of their match ammo and average 1.5 MOA

Post August 2013 guns have all the QC problems sorted out and you'd be incredibly unfortunate to get one with problems. Can't speak for pre August 2013 guns, but the person who said post 2013 has owned a dozen or so different new make 1895's over the years and said anything past 2013 is good, anything earlier can be good out of the box but will most likely need work.
>>
>>29514230
I would pick .308 personally. You don't HAVE to have an .06 to bring down a deer, no matter what Bubba says. I have guys around me that say minimum they use a 7mm Mag and deer will still run from a perfect shot. This is bull shit. get the .308, use 150gr HP, and never look back. I hit a hog just under the spine where it meets the skull with one of those. Shredded the internals, barely damaged the hide, and she dropped like a rock in a pond.

TL;DR
> Shot placement is king. Take the .308 and never look back.

Sadly, I can't help with the American pistol, never used any Ruger handgun except the Blackhawk in .357 Mag and love it.
> Make sure your state allows you to carry a semi auto when hunting. some require very odd calibers or loads if carrying a handgun in deer season, don't let yourself get raped by the DNR.

Although I've been wanting a P226 lately... and yesterday I was eyeing the Arex Zero 1s instead. Fuck if I know, I just bought a 1911 last month and I'm supposed to be saving money for a house. So I probably won't get shit unless I sell something I already have.

same fag here- its the 15 rounds of 45 vs the 17 rounds of 9mm in the same gun (most poly 8mm actually).
sure its heavier and full sized but thats a lot of 45 in a standard capacity magazine
>>
>>29514623
They did you a favor. I bought one and it literally would not fire a goddamn thing because the firing pin channel was filled with grease. Like, completely packed full of vaseline-esque shit. Took it apart. Cleaned it out. Shot it once, a piece of plastic broke off. Literally gave it to the RO, told him it was his now, and drove home.

meant to say "most poly 9mm pistols".

Prime time for deer hunting is dawn and dusk. To make a bad pun, the difference between irons and a scope at those times are night and day. The range is irrelevant.

Then, in the following Order if everything goes as planned

> Bond Arms XRS-9
> K31
> HMG STG

If you wait a bit, Bond Arms is producing new ones that come out Later this year, they fixed some of the minor issues with them and they are supposedly going to be a bit cheaper too

Looking at a Mossberg MVP Patrol with glass, in .308

Most online retailers seem to have them for between 600 and 650, so after tax and mags and assorted kit probably 750. But just look at it. It's so fukken pretty!

Anybody got experience with the MVP range? I'm wondering if the Patrol is good (or the Scout, which is the other one I've looked at).

Somebody from /k/ turned me onto http://www.hinterlandoutfitters.com/ a while back. Try looking there before you make a purchase because they have the best firearm prices I've seen no matter which one I've looked at. Sadly the same does not apply to their knives.

15 rounds of .45 for 1/3 the price.

Ammunition is still plentiful. Loose Greek HXP surplus can be had pretty affordably. Some people have bad things to say about the Korean surplus that shows up from time to time but it often comes on en blocs for really cheap. Some Korean stuff is corrosive and a few lots were prone to case rupture but most is great. Reloading is also a great way to load accurate M1 Garand loads for really cheap and is definitely worth it if you plan on shooting more than a few times a year. Pays for itself really quick.

To answer your other questions. I love my Garands. I actually have six now. The only issues I've ever had with any of them is they occasionally try to eject the clip before they're completely empty. This is caused by a worn $2 spring that is very easy to replace. No other issues ever.

About on par with other dealers I've seen. Occasionally find a better price on armslist or gunbroker, but 640 for the gun/glass combo seems pretty much standard.

Is that picture claiming problems with the XS ghost rings/rail specifically or with the 1895 itself? I've seen plenty of 1895's with fucked up mounting points that do something similar with other irons.
>>
>>29509834
Actually thinking of getting the same as your pic but I was unsure of the current marlin quality. Some in this thread are saying it's good now though. Might just see if any local shops have one I can finger.
>>
>>29520267
OP here, most of the Marlin shilling/information in here is me posting. I feel the same way about wanting to finger fuck one before I buy it, at the least verify that it's made after they stepped up QC.

I decided on a Leupold VX-1 2-7x33mm on Leupold See-Thru High Rings. Dream mode is getting the barrel threaded and throwing a Silencerco Hybrid on there, apparently it sounds like a pellet gun if you suppress subsonic ammo.

Follow up, does anybody have experience with the glass that's included in the combo pack? Wondering if it's worthwhile or if I should just get the gun and bring my own glass.

im not poor, or living between paychecks, i just only set a small chunk of my income aside for fun money. plus im young and dont have a huge amount of savings for emergencies like having to replace my car engine.

>>29511490
$500 timing belt, $30 oil change because why not its already in the shop and $70 other small cleaning and fixes for the same reason.

then the day after i get it out of the shop, something like $300 because the new belt snapped due to being put on wrong, and $1200 to replace my engine because in addition to the belt destroying shit, the oil cap on the bottom pf my car wasnt screwed on all the way and my oil leaked out at the same time, which caused it to sieze up after ripping itself to shreds.

good news is that im probably being reimbursed. bad news is that im paranoid the cmp will sell out or something between now, when i get the marksman qualification done, and the cmp getting to my paperwork (site says 3-6 month wait).

Ehh, the Troy chassis looks a bit too tacticool for me.

I'd like to have a good chassis that works well with adjustable LoP like you said, but I want to keep it somewhat traditional. I might do a nice wood thumbhole or something. I really don't know, there are a ton of options and I haven't decided on anything for sure besides a suppressor.
>>
>>29514230
.308 is perfectly fine, shot placement is what matters here. Don't take retarded shots into the ass of the deer or something and you'll be fine.

I don't know much about the Ruger American besides that it's a really big handgun. If you're comfortable with a duty-sized handgun that hasn't really been proven yet and can't be concealed, then go for it; they're pretty affordable.

Fellow MD bro:

I have a PTR 32; I like it except for the fact it's front heavy for me. I also had problems with magazines until I started using Magpul 30 rounders and now it runs flawlessly. They're not hard to find, just order one from Atlantic Firearms and have it shipped to an FFL.
>>
>>29511821
>forgot they used en blocs
>had to awkwardly load 1 round at a time when I first got mine

PPU ammo (maybe others) uses .264 sized bullets when .268 is what it needs (for 6.5 Carcano) but .268 bullets aren't easy to come by. Not gonna damage the bore but it won't be incredibly accurate.

If you get a short one, they shoot fireballs at night so that's kinda cool.
