first: more likely to get ambushed both alternatives to I5 through Redding are narrow at spots and require you cross bridges that are not easy to bypass and in some cases bridges that cant hold the weight
Second: distance both routes will be either 2-3 hundred more miles or 4-5 hundred more miles depending
third: both I5 and HWY101 have bridges that if dropped would require a 50-60 miles detour if there was/is one that exist

functional air strips have to be made of concrete several feet thick to withstand the weight and pressure of large aircraft, which far exceeds what we put on out normal roads. Some highways can be fucking death traps. See highway 17 running from Santa Cruz to the bay area. Takes about 25 min without traffic but up to 2 hours+ with heavy traffic. That fuckin highway is any ambushers wet dream thanks to the geography surrounding it the highway.
