Hey /k/, UK here. O wamted to get some innawoods gear and there's some stuff that I want to ask /out/ about, but I also wanted to ask you about knives, possibly a kukri and a leatherman. I'm pretty new to all this but I have some basic knowledge, like getting a blade that isn't made from a metal or alloy that oxidises easily, making your knife smooth all the way and full tang, etc, but I was looking for advice on specific knives/kukris. I also wanted advice on a leatherman; What should I be looking at if I want the bare minimum, at least? And how much money will all of this cost me? I have a price range of about 330 pounds, so that's roughly 110 pounds per item, although I can save up a bit.

If you're getting a leatherman and your budget is £110, go for a Wave and save a bit for the Kukri and clothing. If you have no specific tasks for it they make for a decent all round bit of kit.

Kukris - army surplus if you can find them. Solid bits of kit, just need a bit of care.

Mountaineer/climber/outdoors instructor/shooter here. What other gear did you want for innawoods?
>>
>>29500198

I wanted a nice, solid backpack and clothes for innawoods, some sort of flint and steel, maybe a hammock and some sort of cord so I can tie things up (I have no idea how to make traps). You mean this leatherman?

http://www.multi-tool.co.uk/leatherman-wave-standard-tool-nylon-pouch.html?___store=en&___store=en&gclid=CPfLr-PO98sCFUSVGwodkfUN6w

How would I find army surplus kukris, literally just googling it?

And I'm not sure what else to get, I'm a complete begginer. I went innawoods with my dad a little as a kid and I tried going camping with my friends but they all got scared because someone had set up a shelter and they didn't know who so they pussied out, but I want to learn survival skills and just enjoy the woods.

Narrow down your criteria for me - what exactly do you want your pack to do, what do you want it to carry? Are we talking a day or a week in the woods? The choice is so varied you need to be at least a little specific.

That looks like the right tool, and yeah Google Kukris. I think Silvermans might do them.

In terms of going innawoods, I find it much more fun to have something to do when you're in the woods, other than just 'existing'. In the UK that will be hiking, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, all that jazz. That will help line out what kit you'll need and what you need to learn.
>>
>>29500540

By climbing, do you mean mountain climbing?

And I would like to go innawoods to hike, maybe set up a fire, collect some plants and berries, just generally go sightseeing, etc (And trust me, I won't be bored).

I'd like to try to go for a single day (day and night) by myself, see if I can manage it. I was thinking of bringing some warm, impermeable clothes with lots of pockets, hiking shoes, a spacious backpack, some some of chord (like a parachord, maybe?) so I can make a shelter with a bunch of sticks and leaves tied together in a tipi shape, a reliable leatherman with all the basics, a kukri for getting rid of bushes or something or maybe a knife (What would you say about that?) and a shovel to dig a hole for a fire, plus the flint and steel. What do you say to this? Enough/not enough/too much?

You should ask /out/ about their knives given they are the ones that actually use them. /k/ uses firearms but so many of the knife people on /k/ are mall ninja.

Kukri are a nice all-purpose blade but you're going to be carrying a lot of weight and a surprising number of kukri are, oddly enough, not actual kukri at all If you do go the kukri out go with Tora or Himalayan Imports. a lot of people wind up buying from Ex-Gurkha while their blades are nice the caps on their handles tend to break. Also, as beautiful as bone is on a kukri go with wood if you intend to put it through serious use.

With that said in regard to knives for /out/ I personally wouldn't go with a Kukri unless you were going into combat or harvesting plants. People who bring Kukri tend to think they are going to baton with it but the problem with that is it will hurt the blade over time while an axe or hatchet with a nice Appleseed blade will always out-preform any knife and you can always use bushcraft knives to craft new wooden handles if yours breaks.

As far as bushcraft knifes go I'd recommend starting out with something CHEAP! Morakniv are cheap, well built and an /out/ favorite because of their value crown. Once you have more experience with /out/ing and know how to use your knife for tasks like making stakes, feathersticks, etc. maybe try out some more expensive knives.

Try going to Knife General 17/18 in /out/. Knife General 18 is new enough that a lot of /out/ hasn't migrated over yet so you should be able to get a lot of good answers without the meme/shill responses.

By climbing I mean rock climbing.

Hell even bouldering is awesome. Only need shoes and chalk for that.

I forgot to ask: what's your budget for the gear? Because you can get a lot of shit for £110 but it will be shit.

For some perspective, my rucksack cost £75 and I got a staff deal through work...
>>
>>29502927

Well, I don't want it to be shit. What if I save up £400 pounds? I obviously want the basics first. I want to survive maybe a day alone in the woods, then two days and after being comfortable with this, I want to eventually try surviving a week.
>>
>>29502927
Buy surplus, look at go outdoors when there is a sale on, look online for deal with tents included etc
>>
>>29503258

What have you got already?

I mean do you have boots/trousers/shirts that could be used initially?

As a bare bones get up, get yourself some cheap but decent leather boots (Brasher are good, as are Berghaus) for around £80 - you won't get fully waterproof with these but if you're only doing short trips that won't matter too much.

Spend the vast majority of your cash on a decent waterproof - Berghaus Stormcloud is decent for the money and try to avoid second hand if you can, more hassle than its worth.

Decent rucksack can be got for maybe £40 from someone like Vango. About 30-40 litres will do everything for a one nighter with space for longer trips as you go further.

Also, always have backups to what you'll build - don't rely on your fire/shelter building skills entirely because you may become unstuck. Cheap and cheerful gas burner and an army surplus Basha tarp will serve as small but reliable backups.

Wales, Lake District, Peak District, Dartmoor, the woods behind your house.

Just go out. Find woods. Sit in them.
