Anyone know much about the S&W Model 59? My dad has one and its pretty fuckin' fantastic. Wondering if there's much aftermarket or any improvements that can be made. If I can talk him into it, I'll probably end up buying it from him.
Also, fuck off Nick.
Best improvement you can make is buy a 1911.

As a fan of S&W metal framed autos (have 3, have owned 5, from all 3 generations), the most important thing I can tell you is that the 59 hates hollowpoints because it has a narrow feed ramp; if you like it but want an extra bit of reliability, go pick up a 459, 559, or 659, all of which are different variants of an improved version of the 59. For a better overall gun, the 5904 or 5906, or even a 915 (cheap but good), might fit the bill
Forgot to add, the only mags worth buying are factory or MecGar; Pro-mag, etc, are worthless and cost about the same as the MecGar offerings
If you weren't aware, this gun will use any 59 pattern mags you find (ie 5906, 459, etc mags), so you can don't have to go track down anything too specific

Holy shit those look sexy as fuck blued. I never really liked the finish on the 59XX series.
Still sexy though.

But I don't want a 1911.

Is there any brand of HP that could work or a mod to the ramp? I'd like to carry this if I end up getting it. Wouldn't feel too comfortable without HP in it.

It is a damn fine looking weapon. Part of why I like it so much. Not too bad on accuracy either.

Triggers are absolutely awesome
I owned one for a few years but sold it for financial reasons
I used every round under the sun and even hand loaded XTPs and it ran fine.

I agree. At first I didnt really like it because it was so far back on the SA, but I got used to it quick.

>that reset
If you can't handle incredibly smooth travel, an incredibly predictable break, and a very crisp reset, you're shit at shooting

No mod, don't carry it because the finish will get fucked up
Just get a 5904/5906/915 if you want to carry something like it; they'd be way better
Avoid the compact S&W metal framed autos save maybe the 3913; they don't work as well as modern compacts

>don't carry it because the finish will get fucked up
As someone who daily carried a 59 for a few years, you're fucking dumb
The 3rd gens your referencing have shitty triggers compared to a 59

And I regularly carried a 459 openly (for work) AND concealed for a while, it being a pain in the ass to keep rust from forming on the slide, compared to something with a newer finish
The 59's DA pull is much worse than a 3rd gen, and the SA is comparable

>it being a pain in the ass to keep rust from forming on the slide
Carry with a neoprene liner (Alium Gear) or in Kydex

As I said, I got used to it quick. I had only shot a few newer pistols before this one, all of them had longer pulls.

I eventually had a holster made for it out of kydex, for work, but I shortly switched to carrying a 4506 at work and an LCP otherwise
