They didn't specifically choose the vehicles for the invasion of Iraq. They're recon it's what they use.
Fick mentions in his book that IEDs weren't a big threat in 2003 and that they traded protection for being able to carry more equipment.
But considering all the shenanigans they got involved in, he's lucky that that decision didn't come around to bite him in the ass.

Why all the names?
I dunno, but it's the kind of Vietnam shit that gets whole companies wiped out.
I thought the use of rapid crew served weapons were considered the key component of Rumsfield's/Powell's maneuver warfare, hence putting recon in Humvees with a 40mm grenade launcher.
It would have been nice to have newer vehicles, but I'm not sure that the general at the time (Mathis?) even knew how to otherwise use recon elements in a giant flat desert.

It's a dank may may. Of course m113s are more armored than a humvee, but it's as light as light gets and can get wrecked by almost anything heavier than a rifle so that's where the hyperboles come from.
