We don't observe Memorial Day here because it's an American holiday which comes from the end of the Civil War. Instead, we observe Armistice Day, on November 11th, and have a minute's silence at 11:00, for this is when the armistice was signed in 1918.
In Germany, Volkstrauertag ("People's mourning day") is observed on the first day of Advent, and commemorates all victims of war and violent oppression.

I kinda doubt that, since the UK recently officially commended the belgian state for keeping up the memorial services for the 1st & 2nd world war. For things playing of the Last Post at the Menenpoort in Ypres. Traffic is halted daily and a brass band plays the Last Post at exactly 20:00.

National anthems of nations present at the ceremony are played

I'll admit that our tomb of the unknown soldier is largely ignored most of the year, but there's plenty of other ceremonies, including daily ones.

The soldiers swore like sailors for one thing, and they fucked like sailors too. Prostitution flourished in that conflict, as did sexually transmitted diseases and morphine addiction. Diseases ran so rampant there will cases where men literally shat themselves to death, and they frequently used the bathroom outside anyway. Medical instruments were not sterilized even during continuous amputation. The wool uniforms trapped heat in the summer, and shoes didn't always fit so feet were sliced open and bloody. The war was hell on earth.
But the movies conveniently hide all of this.

I know that some soldiers got so emotionally traumatized by combat they actually failed to fire. There would be rifles found with multiple bullets still in the chamber, never fired.
Shoulders would also bruise, because the guns would get harder to fire as fighting went on.

I turn 48 in June. Mom was born in 1944. Dad was born in 1935. Both were raised in relative poverty. I have living relatives who remember being dirt fucking poor and living without electricity and running water. I have an uncle who can pretty much make anything with a welder, grinder and scrap steel because he had to. Compared to them, My life has been soft as hell. Yet I talk to my relatives just entering adulthood and they can't imagine living as I lived. What's odd that my parents didn't have me until later in life, so I have the unique experience of being a Gen X kid raised by hard ass parents who were born during or remember WWII and a father that fought in Korea. So while my friends were being raised by baby boomers and were being given awards for showing up, my sibling and me were being raised by parents that were all about tough but fair, because they had seen hard times. One of my cousins kids was talking about how times were hard, to which my uncle responded, when there are no deer or squirrels in the woods, then you can say times are hard.
It's coming though. We're solidly in the "soft people make soft times" phase of things. It'll be interesting to see if the country can survive it.

My grandfather moved to the united states long after the fall of Germany and started his family life in America and since he served in the military the nazi hunters where also going around town asking questions about nazi veterans and they came up to my dad when he was a young teenager.
They actually followed my own father back to the farmland that my grandfather has and they begin to harass him until my grandfather marched outside with his Mauser that he got from some old pawnshop and shouted in german "leave my son alone and leave my family alone or by god I will take more allies down with me!" With the rifle aimed at them.
My father told me that his grandfather fired several shots at the nazi hunters cars as they where speeding away and no police where called because people didn't like to deal with police drama.
My grandfather passed away a few years ago and my father had the mauser buried with my grandfather because my father told me how much the mauser meant to him.
My father is now also old and the people never came back to bother my family ever again because of my grandfather and his rifle.

Great grandfather was a warden at the POW Camp Wharton after his injury. (He was a combat engineer, so even though I never got the chance to talk with him about his injury, I can make an educated guess that mines were probably involved.)
He said the German POWs fucking loved it there, many of them saying the conditions in his camp were better than back home.
To be fair though, that's not because we were good guys. Wharton and the surrounding tiny Texas counties were in something of an economic/infrastructure boom at the time and needed strong backs to basically turn these backwater towns into bona fide municipalities. POWs were often working nonstop for private citizens (nearly unsupervised) and on county projects for days at a time. Unlike Werner VonBraun's rocket teams though, these POWs were paid, and were paid well thanks to the fruits of the economic boom.
The POWs were allowed to keep (most) of the money they'd make while working for the city or for the citizens and the 'program' (read: gramps) would pocket a sum for himself.
I'd feel a little guilty if I didn't point out there was (of course) something of a racial element at play here. If you're a white family that's lived in Texas for a few generations there's a good chance you've got some German in you. That chance goes up as you go back in time. There's enough German in Texas that independent dialects manifest around Fredericksburg, particularly as you get further and more rural innawoods. [Daily Reminder that Texas is fucking massive, people].
My point is: A bunch of rednecks suddenly got moderately rich very quick and we felt we could get picky with what 'working class' we had do a lot of our shit that we suddenly needed doing. German POWs were a more socially acceptable poor working class in that area than Blacks, Mexicans, Mormons, Irish, Jews, or some yankee carpetbaggers who's daddies never drank and who's mommies couldn't fish.
