http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/31/world/asia/south-china-sea-us-navy.html

>Suddenly, the radio crackled again as the frigate responded in Chinese: “U.S. Warship 62, this is Chinese Warship 575. Today’s weather is great. It is a pleasure to meet you at sea.”

>Ensign Li responded, also in Chinese: “This is U.S. Warship 62. The weather is indeed great. It is a pleasure to meet you, too, over.”

>And on it went as the two warships, each loaded with missiles, torpedoes and heavy artillery, confronted each other with an exchange of weather pleasantries at sea. Testing whether the Chinese were openly following, the Chancellorsville made a turn, and its officers stood back and waited.

>A shout came from another one of Captain Renshaw’s junior officers: “He just turned, sir!” The Chancellorsville now had a tail. But for how long?

>Apparently the Chinese ship wanted an answer to that question as well.

>“U.S. Navy Warship 62, this is Chinese Navy Warship 575,” came a new message. “Do you continue to have long-term voyage at sea? Over.”

>Another no-no. Telling the Chinese the intended duration of the trip could be an inherent acknowledgment that they had the right to know, Captain Renshaw said. And that is not considered freedom of navigation.

>“This is U.S. Navy Warship 62,” Captain Renshaw responded. “Roger, all of our voyages are short because we enjoy our time at sea no matter how long we are away from home. Over.”

>As it happened, the Chinese ship had a ready answer for that.

>“U.S. Navy Warship 62, this is Chinese Navy Warship 575,” came the reply. “Copy that I will be staying along with you for the following days. Over.”

>That was Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Chinese frigate was replaced by a destroyer, which followed the Navy warship until midnight Thursday, when the American vessel exited the South China Sea.

The PLAN sound like pretty cool and bro guys 2bh pham.
>>
>>29446482
Well their commanders understand they neither need nor want to challenge the Americans too much to take strategic control of the SCS.

America is doing very little to challenge China and so the Chinese respond the same way.

Plus the little guys never want to start WW3.
>>
>>29446482
Reminds me of stories from the Cold War when we'd do something similar stuff with their bombers and our interceptors. The Soviets started putting commissars on the planes, so they'd simulate turbulence to make him go to the back of the plane so they could carry on.

IIRC the PLAN are pretty cool guys and the good cops in the good-cop-bad-cop play that China is playing there.

The bad cops are the Chinese Coast Guard and their 12.000 tons purpose-built ramming cutters that are armed to the teeth for short range bullet hosing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spratly_Islands
>The Spratly Islands dispute is an ongoing territorial dispute between Brunei, China (People's Republic of China), Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan (Republic of China), and Vietnam, concerning ownership of the Spratly Islands, a group of islands and associated "maritime features" (reefs, banks, cays, etc.) located in the South China Sea. The dispute is characterised by diplomatic stalemate and the employment of low-level military pressure techniques (such as military occupation of disputed territory) in the advancement of national territorial claims. All except Brunei occupy some of the maritime features.

They are claimed but not internationally recognized. Plus the South China Sea is the busiest naval throughfare in the world.
>>
>>29448845
Actually, the chinese sailed right next to Alaskan coastline and all the us did was observe.

Because freedom of the seas and innocent passage is a thing, and the USN is not comprised of sperglords.

Tresspassing implies that the chinese have ownership over innocent passage. They dont.
>>
>>29448862
They still have effective control over it. America's unwillingness to recognize it wont change that the Chinese will react as if it is theirs.

Japanese also having effective control over the Senkaku islands, which is why they are also issuing angry protests when China sails near those islands, that China doesnt recognize to be Japanese sovereignity.

And to be exact, those islands arent exactly all new. China expanded existing structures - just like how the Vietnamese and Philippines did it as well on a much smaller scale before China began while backed by their superior industrial power.

Those islands had small structures before:

http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/07/30/world/asia/what-china-has-been-building-in-the-south-china-sea-2016.html

>China’s reefs hosted smaller structures for years before the current surge in construction. By preserving these initially isolated buildings, China can claim that it is merely expanding existing facilities, similar to what other countries have done elsewhere in the region.

Vietnam's expansions. Of course pitiful compared to China, but they shouldnt have done it in the first place, since this gave the Chinese the reason they needed to build those bases.
>>
>>29448925
>They still have effective control over it.

NOPE. EEZs are defacto international waters, with limited economic rights given to owners of the EEZ.
>>
>>29448814
Soooo....
Theyre hiding how big thier navy really is by building warships and declaring them coast guard vessels?
>>
>>29448953
Thats hardly a warship anon. Its for bullying smaller nations unarmed fishing vessels.

To be fair though, about 1/3rd of the PLAN is made up of not much more armed sub chasers.
>>
>>29448901
SCS is busy, but the gross share of the naval traffic is Chinese to begin with. China imports 80% of their oil and gas through the SCS.

http://atimes.com/2016/01/china-and-the-south-china-sea-dispute-the-5-trillion-lie/

Why would China want to close the SCS down, if they rely on it the most? It is rather that China fears that the US wants to choke China off in the SCS according to AirSea Battle and Off-Shore Control and wants to build bases there to extend the reach of their military assets and sensor networks.

>>
>>29448969
>Why would China want to close the SCS down,

They dont. They want to shut down all non chinese traffic. It kills their competitors and opens up domestic demand.
>>
>>29448951
EEZ allows the nation that owns it to chase out military vessels that are conducting things that arent innocent passage. Such as conducting spy-fligths via EP-3s/P-8, launchig helicopters to get close to island bases and sailing T-AGOS vessels with SURTASS close to your submarine bases to snoop around.

All of these things were NOT done by China off Alaska, but by the US for decades off China's southern coast.
>>
>>29448965
I see, Im a former grunt so I know next to nothing about naval doctrine.

So they go out and scare say, malaysian and singaporan (or any other small nation's) fishing vessels away from prime fishing spots or something?

I mean I understand the need for harbour security and what not, but why build a vessel that is obviously very expensive and over armed just to fuck with rusty unarmed fishing boats?

Im really curious about this stuff.
>>
>>29448978
Type 037. Even the versions they slapped missles on are pitiful.
>>
>>29448982
This is not possible and you know it. Civilian traffic cannot be selectively blockaded in open waters or even straits, especially when all ships nowadays sail under random flags and have crews made 90% of phillippines. If you want to block trafic, you do that by mining harbors of the adversary nation. And that's what China would do if they really want to hurt the Japanese/Taiwanese - not by controling the SCS via naval bases.

China depends on trade and fucking up their trade-partner's ships is a bad business for them.
>>
>>29449003
That's because it's a backwards country and lacks the capability.

Type 037 isnt even in widespread service anymore and are slowly, but surely, getting retired.

The PLAN's most numerous classes are the Type 022 stealth catamaran missile boats and the Type 056 Corvette.
>>
>>29449003
>EEZ allows the nation that owns it to chase out military vessels that are conducting things that arent innocent passage.

Actually, no.

innocent passage applies to territorial waters. The only rights the claiments have in an EEZ scenario is things like fishing or mineral/resources rights.

EEZs are international waters, and anyone can do anything they want as long as it does not distrupt the flow of goods or commerce or takes resources.

>While the EEZ is sui generis—neither territorial seas nor high seas —the balance of rights and interests in the zone inure to the international community and not the coastal state. While it is true that coastal states enjoy limited rights in the EEZ, the term “international waters” is an accurate shorthand reference used by navies to describe all waters seaward of the territorial sea. While the coastal state has rather limited and circumscribed rights in the EEZ, the ships and aircraft of all nations enjoy all the high seas freedoms and other internationally uses of the seas, except those that interfere with narrowly prescribed coastal state rights, such as fishing. The EEZ was cut out of the high seas in order to grant coastal states a handful of limited rights, and it is correct as a matter of law to describe the zone as “international waters” for military purposes.

https://news.usni.org/2016/03/28/opinion-dont-miss-the-boat-on-australian-and-u-s-policy-in-the-south-china-sea

>>29449007
Thats right. Fishing is a huge business.

Its more than that though. Oil too.
>>
>>29449035
Which is why China is conducting 'aggressive' interception flights and escorts every US vessel from safe distance nowadays.
>>
>>29449041
>The PLAN's most numerous classes are the Type 022 stealth catamaran missile boats

>missle boats

83 in service

>056 corvette

25 in service

Vs 94~ type 037/I sub chasers.

Nice try, oh, and thats not including the piss poor 037II and IG missle boats conversions, which add another 30 or so.
>>
>>29449059
It is not so simple. Military activities in another country's EEZ is point of contention during UNCLOS negotiations, that the US didnt even participate to begin with. But both sides should have 'due regard' for one another, which is not given by the close range spying of US assets off China's coast and military installations.

022 isnt a subchaser. And the 037s also arent subchasers, but FACs.

And there's nothing wrong with that, seeing how much of China's enemies arent far away from China. Littoral missile crafts for near-sea defense makes a lot of sense.
>>
>>29449122
>It is not so simple.

It is so simple. The only rights claimets have over EEZs is over resource rights. Its an ECONOMIC zone. Nothing more. Its not territorial. It never was, as much as china pretends it to be.

The US will keep doing what its doing, becuase its legal, and thats that.

>Bateman and Beijing also say that foreign warships nations must operate with “due regard” in the EEZ for the “significant rights and duties” of coastal states. Of course user states must have “due regard” for coastal state rights in the EEZ, but those rights are strictly limited to resource exploitation, and narrower jurisdiction over protection of the marine environment, authority over offshore structures related to resource exploitation, and marine scientific research. Moreover, in exercising these limited resource-related rights, coastal states also must observe “due regard” for high seas freedoms in the EEZ, such as naval operations.

Same source as before.

There is no arguement here. The rights are extremely limited.

Because china is treating the SCS like its personal playground.

Before, there was a status quo between relitivly weak nations. Now there is a very real chance that china could go for a great portion of it and distrupt trillions of dollars worth of commerce.
