What's a bad idea? I know Rhodesia wasn't perfect, but just because the political infrastructure wasn't reliable doesn't mean that everything else was doomed to fail.
Look at it this way. Rhodesia, along with South Africa, were one of the only African nations that thrived in a continent wracked with war, famine and disease. They had a great military despite the embargoes, a great agricultural economy, Rhodesians had a high standard a living, among other things.
I think the problem that most people had with Rhodesia is that they took rather controversial methods to preserve that spot, which is understandable. But the whole thing turned into a convoluted mess and made the subject matter controversial and provocative.
I'm neutral to Rhodesia and so should be everyone who is even remotely interested in trying to modernize Africa and make it thrive, because that would make for a beautiful sight and it would contribute greatly to the rest of the world.

Change of that sort has to come from within, and given it'd be white people complaining about an old colony, well... think about how that would look on the world stage. South Africa is no longer a viable ally, the rest of the European nations have lost their colonies, so no hope from any of them. By African standards, it was great, and that's considering the embargoes they had since the UDI. Also, they appealed to mercenaries once shit started to get real in the early 70s because they were fighting a war they were losing.

They didn't have an apartheid, tribal people had representation and the only reason there weren't more blacks in the government was because it was their lack of education. Now, the subject of education in Rhodesia is a one that there's not a lot of unbiased information on, so that remains a mystery.

Voting restrictions were based on level of education, not color. I'd vouch for a similar policy for the US if universities weren't as fucked as they are now.
