Tell me stories about idiots mishandling explosives

My buddy had to go clean up a mess one time.

Two soldiers were training on how to use a LAW with a live tube. Why they weren't using a spent tube, I'll never know.

Well one thing lead to another and the LAW gets fired. Goes through and impales one soldier at point blank range and then into a concrete wall. It was inside and within safe-arm distance, so it just burst apart rather than exploding.
>>
>>29407301

Convoy about to go into Iraq from Navistar.

POG as a muthafucker unit.

I got some female SPC from S1 as a mk19 gunner in my up armored M998.

Somehow she causes it to runaway fire. Just keeps letting it fire off to the side into the desert. Didn't know to drop the charging handles to stop it. Screaming like a fucking idiot. Had to stop the truck, get out and climb up from outside.

dropped the handles and slapped the shit out of her. she let almost an entire box get fired off.

she got replaced and sent to drive another truck.

He dead.

I have also gone to an explosives range after loaning it to a Combat Engineer unit.

We found M81 ignitors with blasting cap stuck in the face first and time fuze sticking out the back end.

How did we find them you ask? Why they were tossed in the fucking bushes on the edge of the range, I assume out of embarrassment.

I was at Taji in 2005.

any UXO got carefully taken to the empty northern part of the base. Then blown up.

local insurgents like to shoot rockets with no warheads at us. they saved the live ammo for the gate where the Iraqis came on to work, or the Iraqi National Guard half of the base.
>>
>>29407517
these bunkers were packed front to back, floor to ceiling with every kind of arty shell and spin stabilized rocket that every Warsaw Pact country ever made. They really didn't have the assets (at first) to move it out and blow it some place else, so they tried to wire it up the best they could, but the explosion and resulting secondaries wound up just tossing shit into the air. After that, they reported to higher and got what they needed to do it the right way.

I'm a mine engineer.

Explosives are required in many mining operations to break apart rock so it can be easily transported.

When you get high school dropouts mixing and loading explosives it gets interesting.

>people loading 10 ton boulders with explosives while the guy on the other side of the boulder is working on it with a jackhammer

>guy loading the explosives fails to take into account geologic anomalies and loads 5x the explosives requested by the engineer

>man setting off explosives while standing under 50 tons of loose rock

I've seen $10 million augers destroyed due to negligence with a fucking boulder cutting through the arm as it's hurled at more than 100mph, windows blown out in neighboring communities, and flyrock take out trucks half a mile away.

isn't that because tannerite is a deflagrating low explosive akin to blackpowder, which is why it isn't regulated like... well everything that isn't a low explosive. it burns like a motherfucker and expands a fuckton of gas. pressurize it and you've made a puff of white smoke into a lawnmower shaped pipe bomb.

Fly rock will absolutely rape your shit, and dynamite is not a joke.

Back during the cold war they were mining coal in the powder river basin
Due to the geology of the region the best way to get the coal is to set off giant fucking explosions. The explosions were so big that the soviets, russians, chinese, and french thought we were testing nukes so they insisted that they come watch these shots to make sure we were telling the truth.

It may not explode but the exothmeric reaction produces a lot of heat in a short period of time, I was leaning over the bucket when it went off to see what was wrong, the lucky thing is thermite reacts very quickly, so there was minimal radiation of heat from the reaction to me.

I thought we should at least have some small amount of safety gear.

It's not explosive but it can be damaging your fucking around with shit you don't know how to correctly use, we got the idea to make it off myth busters.

>isn't that because tannerite is a deflagrating low explosive akin to blackpowder, which is why it isn't regulated like... well everything that isn't a low explosive.
That's entirely wrong. The more lax regulations are simply a virtue of Tannerite's binary nature - since they are not explosive until mixed, the components are much safer to transport and store and thus exempt from the pertinent regulations. Once mixed, Tannerite forms a full-fledged high-explosive only slightly less potent than TNT (and a hell of a lot more sensitive, though much less so than something like nitroglycerin), and is no longer legal to transport or store without the appropriate license.

>Shoots it straight in the air
>Arrow goes out of sight

That synopsis, like most modern Canadian media, is far too simple and bad.

Vince Coleman DID escape after warning the first train, but then RETURNED to the dispatch office to warn more inbound trains.

>"Hold up the train. Ammunition ship afire in harbor making for Pier 6 and will explode. Guess this will be my last message. Good-bye boys."

I used to work for this OPFOR contractor at Dix, one story I had relayed to me

>be a few guys
>walking through woods near live fire range for some reason
>suddenly stop, realize they're surrounded by UXO
>carefully follow each others' footsteps back the way they came

And another

>be soldier
>find unexploded 40mm
>pick it up and start tossing and catching it
>grenade arms on one of the tosses
>have a bad time

We also did some of our OPFOR shit on the ranges, and were instructed not to fuck with anything we found lying around.

So now I'm in the weird position of being the guy who everyone goes to for everything because they know I'll do a good job of it, but they won't let me do a good job without fighting them about it.

So I'm just the guy who's good at his job but "questions authority" too much.

Thermites can explode if you use more volatile oxidisers. This happened to me 10 years ago:
>Have some scrap graphite ring molds from a jeweller
>Too dirty and pitted for gold, fine for shitty iron
>Using thermite as furnace doesn't get hot enough
>Have some cupric oxide to hand
>Decide to try making a copper ring
>Usually ignite using a safety fuse dipped in potassium perchlorate/sugar paste at the end
>Fuse isn't hot enough to light the thermite, paste is
>Light fuse
>Begin to retreat
>Bright flash blinds me
>Hands feel like they've been roasted for an hour

Basically, what happened was that the fuse WAS hot enough to ignite the cupric oxide/aluminum mixture and, rather than burning slowly it combusted within a fraction of a second. I later learned that this happened because iron oxide only reacts with molten aluminum while cupric oxide will give up its oxygen atom simply when it's heated. This causes the reaction to progress beyond the zone of molten aluminum and, if the mixture is sufficiently close to stoichiometry with very fine ingredients, will cause it to combust almost as fast as black powder.

I'm behind the black rectangle, a foot further forwards and the molten copper/copper vapor would have left me with a Deadpool face. The radiant heat cooked the backs of my hands (luckily, I'd reached up to scratch an itch after lighting the fuse so my hand took the heat). The motorcycle pants I was wearing were cut half way through by the spray of copper.

I performed a few more tests afterwards (with a much longer fuse). Interestingly, if more than about 4oz is ignited, the copper vapor thrown into the air retains enough heat to again combust, producing a black cloud instead of a copper colored one and a much heavier blast, basically, a fuel air explosion. However, the actual power is significantly less than black powder, probably because the products aren't gasses at room temperature.

>>29411491
Can't you just for once try to not "question authority"? Maybe this will put you in a better position further down the line.
I know it's hard to work against one's principles, but it's foolish to only think short-term. If saying yessir once gives you an advantage more often, it is a simple calculation.

Sure, but see it like this:
The lower you are, the more idiots you have above you. Just one step higher and you have one less layer of jackasses telling you shit.

Apart from that, shouldn't it be possible in the military to go to the next higher instance to complain about you orders? Usually "middle management" is full of debiles, but higher up people are usually saner and understand things.

I'm doing some home casting myself, small sand molds for rings and shit so an acetylene torch has been sufficient for my needs although it is too hot for what I'm doing in actuality. >>
>>29407963
The most irritating part about that is that you shouldnt ever have to hammer the pins.
That particular pin should go in with pressure from one hand, he was being lazy and trying to put the gun and the cradle on at the same time.
You first connect the cradle because its lighter and easier to properly alingn the holes so the pins just slide right in, THEN you drop the gun into the cradle, again, should not require much effort to insert the pins.

It used to drive me fucking nuts that some dipshit would go "oh, this isnt fitting right, guess I gotta smash the shit outta it."

Then you get assigned to be gunner on that truck and all the holes are stripped the fuck out and all the pins are broken. Now mounting/dismounting is a 40 minute screaming match between 3 people because one dipshit in a hurry to go back to his masturbation sessio figured "smash it with a hammer" was necessary.

The fact that he was using live munitions, well fuck, you shouldnt even have to rub 2 braincells together to know thats a bad idea.

Not him and I'm in no way claiming this is even comparable in severity but I had a pretty bad motorcycle crash a few months ago. After my injuries had mostly healed, I'd sometimes fall asleep with the last second before I collided repeating over and over then wake up in the middle of the night feeling the same pain I felt the day after the accident (back stiff as a board, shoulders locked hunched forwards, ankles throbbing, ect.).

Also sometimes I have dreams where im going about my buisiness and some burnt up or dismembered haji grabs me.
Havent woke up screaming since I started taking melatonin tho.

You can get it over the counter in 5mg, 10mg, or 15mg tablets. Dont take more than 10mg thomganything above 10 makes you fall asleep super fast, but the dreams are actually worse.
I like it cuz its a non-addictive sleep aid that doesnt make you feel drugged/dopey when you wake up.

I hate that idiots have ruined things for everyone. Hexamine sucks dick in every way conceivable and should be confined to being used for running model steam engines.

>actually blowing up a gas cooker
I have been in 10 years and have seen gas cookers catch fire at least once for everyone of those years, and no one has managed to actually blow one up.

Turn the knob and close the lid. Fire extinguisher should always be right there if you don't do that.

That guy looks way cooler than me. Im just some dumb pollak whos too unlucky to avoid bad situations and lucky enough to get out in one piece. Had a good team too.
27 firefights, 32 IED strikes (14 of em were in one day) and we got through it with only 1 KIA and 1 guy lost his legs, hes got some robot ones and is still in I think. Like I said, it was a really good company with competent leadership and good training.

Not me, my company. We started out with 17 minerollers, we left with 4
Lost 3 vehicles too but somehow took no serious casualties.
We were in a valley where terrain was highly channelizing, there were two raids done simultaneously on both ends of the valley.
On our deployment instead of splitting our heavy weapons company between 3 rifle companies we remained as one company, so we had 8 .50's, 6 mk19s, 15 240's and 6 mortars, one end of the valley got into a tic, too hot for helo's to take em out of there so we ended up having to use our vehicles to shuttle them in several trips to the quiet end so helos could get em out. There was only one way in and out so they basically just laid em in front of us as fast as we could move for 3 days. Also multiple ambushes by RPG teams, machinegun emplacements, and a recoiless rifle.
The hajis even tried to move a technical into the valley with a 23mm anti air cannon but air took em out before they got there.
During that time we called in 6 hellfire strikes, 2 F-18's made 2 passes, and an A-10 gave us cas as well as multiple gun runs from an appache and later from a pair of cobras.
Shot my first guy on that one too, lol it peaked on the 4th of july no less.
(Keep in mind it was fuckin chaos, there were 400 of us, and a whole hornets nest of god knows how many of them, we still try to piece it all into a coherent story today but it was really just a giant fuckin mess that we somehow only lost 1 guy in)

>Contemporary and subsequent accounts record that the army's explosion caused more damage than the first, but this, Fallon says, is a myth; damage claims arising from the second explosion amounted to less than a quarter of the sum claimed as a result of the original blast.

I'm going to put on some of my old statistic evaluation specs here and give a take.

Damage claims resulting from two demolition events in a single location less than a week apart is a horrible measure to determine whose demolition was actually more destructive.

Most importantly, they wouldn't have repaired the damage from the first blast yet, giving the second demolition a buffer of sorts. The second demolition might thus have damaged far more, had the first not damaged it already.

Secondly we have to take into account a pair of legal questions, which I do not know the answer to. The most important of these is the likelihood of actually receiving your claim: it's more than likely that it would prove easier to get your money if your claim was against the criminal group rather than the government itself.

Of secondary importance is fraud. How easy would it have been to claim something had been destroyed in the first blast, and then the evidence cleaned up by the second.

Saw similar shit with Iraqi EOD.
>find weapons cache
>tens of thousands of rusty or otherwise corroded small arms ammo
>tell them "hey it's just bullets, burn it don't blow it up"
>they throw a single 1/4lb block of C4 through the door and det it
>bullet shower occurs as all it does is throw the loose rounds everywhere
>"Mista, why that no work? We do exactly what you say?"
>No Habababeeb, you did the exact fucking opposite of what I said (again). Now take this stack of $5 bills, round up every woman and child in the town, and spend the next week finding all those bullets.
And Lord help you if you're within minimum safe distance of an Iraqi with an arc welder.
>Iraqi EOD truck has a fucking arc welder on it for some reason
>get a call they found a VBIED parked near a market at night
>get there
>one guy nigger-rigged it to work as a plasma cutter and is cutting the front seats out of a Hilux (socket wrenches are alien tech to these guys)
>another guy is poking what is clearly a stack of 2 dozen artillery shells that're in the bed with a copper grounding rod
>third guy is sitting on the bumper taking a shit
>nobody's pulling security
>cut off the gas flow to nigger-rigged cutter while buddy takes grounding rod from the other retard
>OK you already fucked this up, slap some C4 on it and blow it FROM A MINIMUM OF 300 METERS
>drive to min safe distance (which for that much boom is like 750m)
>they all pile back in their humvee
>drive 50 yards away
>turret gunner shoots it with the .50
>KABOOM
>no more Iraqi EOD

yea, near the end of my second tour they were encasing 155 rounds in concrete to look like curbing or rocks. Got a report in to the IP station we were at of a IED. Always suspicions of a reported IED because it was usually Hadji calling it in to get you to drive out to it. My section stayed behind. The story I got from the squad leader went like this.
>pull up to area of suspected IED
>stop 100 m back
>start to dismount to pull security
>IPs roar by in their Hilux with like 6 "EOD" riding/hanging off the back
>they drive up and spot ,it's sticking out of some concrete
>they get out and just walk right up to it
>wires running out of the nose of the round and buried in the ground running off to who knows where
>the come back and ask for Gerber
>they go back and cut the wires, throw it into the bed of the Hilux and drive off
I can only think the detonator failed, or the Hadji on over watch failed to see them and didn't blow it
I expected it to end like video related

They're just working on the same principle of 'If Allah wills it' as they do when magdumping wildly in a general direction whilst standing out in the open, firmly in the belief that if it's Allah's will then their shots will hit. You see the same reasoning anywhere you might expect some consideration of safety or slight application of intelligence to a task, at least when dealing with the 100% blind faith ones.

Not negligent use but I've never found a good thread for it before so I'll tell it here. It's a story I've heard so many times around my county from a bunch of people but I'll tell you guys the most believable. There's this mother fucker that used to live near me who went by Bad Bob. Bad Bob was an engineer and a man of many hats but his best work was with dynamite.

>Bad Bob gets a new sweetie and wants to make her happy.
>she teaches at the nearby religious school and has been meaning to take the kids out for a field trip.
>Bob suggests that they come watch him do a job for a local farmer.
>farmer apparently has a massive stump in an area he wants to cultivate but needs it gone.
>this thing is maybe ten feet by ten feet or so in either direction near the treeline of the property border.
>Bob decides this would be perfect to show the kids and to impress his lady friend.
>day of job, Bad Bob arrives and all the kids go ape shit knowing that they get to see something explode.

I don't know how american beer kegs are made, but beer kegs here are made from aluminium and just burst open if you cook them. Are yours 3mm steel with a sturdy valve or what?
Also, pressure cans have their weakest point around the bottom plate, so when this thing explodes, it should always explode through the bottom. So no shrapnel.
>>
>>29416195
>he begins, setting charges around the base and slightly under the stump. All the farm animals leave Bob alone and let him work.
>except for one fucking rooster. Gets all up in Bob's face and pisses him off.
>Bob gets mad and smacks the shit out of the rooster. Rooster leaves.
>Bob continues and finishes it up. Starts spooling the wire out towards the kids and about half way there the rooster starts pecking and clawing his legs.
>Bob is carrying a plunger, a wooden crate of gear and a spool of wire so he goes with the only choice before him
>Bob kicks the rooster across the lawn and it fucks off.
>meets up with his honey and the kids and wires the plunger up
>kids lose minds with excitement
>"Going to set it off?! Now?! How about now!?"
>Bob just stands there with his back to the stump and pulls out a sack of tobacco and a paper and begins to slowly roll a cigarette.
>"Kids, if you learn one thing in my trade, it's that timing is absolutely key to everything. Too early and someone may get hurt, too late and you might miss your opportunity to get it just right."
>as he finishes his sentence and rolling his cigarette he places it in his mouth and lights it. As he does his hand finally punches the plunger home.
>the second he does the rooster comes into view across the field and hops on top of the stump.
>as the story goes, when Bad Bob set off the explosives, the stump flew 25 feet into the air. The rooster went 35 and managed to panic and flail enough to fly into the tree line as it fell.
>the farmer got back to bob sometime later and informed him that about 3 days later the bird came back and Bob did not in fact "Owe him another piece of shit piece of poultry".

I just read in a newspaper, that a local idiot found a small heap of black powder on his attic. He poured it into a pot and put it on his balcony for whatever reason. The next day he had a friend over, and they went out for a cigarette. Mistaking the pot of black powder for an ashtray, the friend tried to extinguish his cigarette in it. The following deflagration nearly tore his hand off.

Then there was this guy that tried to handload his revolver rounds during a power outage. Of course he used a candle as a light source. I guess you guys can think of the consequences.

Oh, and this one nearly resulted in an unfortunate accident:
>be me
>working in a residential home for disabled people
>it's new-years-eve
>my colleague makes his own fireworks
>basically packets of black powder mixed with different compounds for colourful explosions
>Our shift is over and we start celebrating the new year in the break room
>we get drunk
>suddenly he pulls one of his explosive devices out of his backpack
>noice.jpg
>we decide to light it up
>throw it out of the window
>it detonates right after passing through the window
>ask my collegaue what kind of fuse he used in that thing
>"dunno lol"
>leave immediately
>nobody ever found out, they thought it was a rocket that veered off-course

Was EOD. I lost count how many times the following scenerio played out in the States:

>Police call us up because they found/got a call of a piece of ordnance
>Tell ok, we'll be right out, don't touch it.
>Drive out, meet cops.
>Ask them to show us where the ordnance is
>Cop open trunk of car and it's sitting right there.

If you encounter feathers going terminal velocity, you have more pressing matters than the feathers.
>>
>>29416462
terminal velocity isn't a fixed velocity. It's just the fastest something will get going with only gravity and air resistance acting on it. For a brick, that's fast. For a feather, very slow.
>>
>>29416208
Stainless. A double wall half keg will take and impressive amount of pistol caliber bullets from point black before being pierced. My buddy found one by the rail road tracks and we started shooting at it because it already had a hole in it. It took 14 shots of 230 fmj from government model 1911 as to close to on top of eachother to make a hole. It wasn't a clean or through hole either, it just finally tore in that area. Rifle rounds through and through no problem though.

Moral of the story if you get into a gun fight in a bar dive behind the closest half keg you can find and you should be gtg.
>>
>>29416477
Oh, you're right. I always thought terminal velocity was solely calculated by gravitational pull.
