A magic portal to another world opens up and gives them a reason to send in their forces, but they aren't total dicks about it and just establish a base and start diplomatic talks after the initial response of force - they could very easily roll in and conquer the place, but they don't. It's just supposed a fantasy where their forces get to independently do some good and be heroes, and it's fun. It's not the greatest anime ever, but I look forward to it every week and I'm going to miss it when it's over. The manga goes deeper into the story but it's not necessarily better, just a different take on the same story. I hope more of it get translated. And so does the LN for that matter. That's way ahead of everything else but has the least available in English.
So yeah, if you're not some pretentious hipster then you might actually enjoy it. Otherwise, stick to the poorly drawn but slightly more brutal version that edgelords gush over. Or go full weeb and read the original then try to join the JSDF yourself. Different strokes.

If you wargamed this scenario out, you'd have the homeported carrier offering support during the initial battle, not to mention the F-15Cs out of Kaneda and maybe even some F-16s from Korea (only if it took long enough to plan the counterattack).
