Hey /k/, I recently became the proud owner of my first firearm - a Mossberg Maverick 88, obtained from a Cabela's for $179, longer tube and shell sock thing included. A friend took me out shooting today, and it was fucking awesome; I just have a few questions as a new gun owner.

1. Is pic related + soft case + a high shelf enough counter-kid precautions? I have 2 kids in the house with me, plenty old enough (11 and 10) to know that it's a fucking shotgun and might kill your ass to death if you fuck with it.

against criminals haha they will just take it and cut the trigger guard off later

teach your kids not to be fuckwits

3. Will leaving shells in the magazine and the hammer(?) ready-to-fire for extended perionds of time fuck up the springs?
>>
>>29330528
>>29330517

These are counter-intuitive

Just keep it loaded in a safe if you have kids so they can't figure out how to unlock it or bring it to school or show their dumbass friends
>>
>>29330534

After several years, and you can replace the springs
>>
>>29330546
this is fuddlore

you'll fuck the springs if you constantly load and unload the thing
>>
>>29330534
it will fuck up the shells if you leave it loaded for a long time(roughly a year)
the plastic will deform and while it will still work but be harder to pump
its a good idea to shoot that ammo like every 6 months or so.
as for the spring wearing out thats decades later

Yeah, I wish I could. My sister that's living with us while she's in college is the main issue. She's gonna shit a brick and freak out if/when she finds out, and the last time she 'freaked out' we found her in a fucking meth house 3 states away.

So I'm just gonna play secrecy for now, and cross that bridge when I blast Jamal feat. my TV in the face.

It's fine. I use Lucas upper cylinder oil for rotating parts and valvoline red chassis grease for sliding parts. You apply, then wipe off excess with a rag. Clean with Ed's Red after every range trip or every three month's and then reapply lube.

MIXING:
Mix outdoors, in good ventilation. Use a clean 1 gallon metal,chemical-resistant, heavy gage PET or PVC plastic container. NFPA approved plastic gasoline storage containers are also OK. Do NOT use HDPE, which is permeable, because the acetone will eventually evaporate. The acetone in ER will also attack HDPE, causing the container to
collapse, making a heck of a mess! Add the ATF first. Use the empty container to measure the other components, so that it is thoroughly rinsed. If you incorporate the lanolin into the mixture, melt this carefully in a double boiler, taking precautions against fire. Pour the melted lanolin it into a larger container, rinsing the lanolin container with the bore cleaner mix, and stirring until it is all dissolved. I recommend diverting a small quantity, up to 4 ozs. per quart of the 50-50 ATF/kerosene mix for optional use as an "ER-compatible" gun oil. This can be done without impairing the effectiveness of the remaining mix.

LABEL AND NECESSARY SAFETY WARNINGS:
RIFLE BORE CLEANER CAUTION: FLAMMABLE MIXTURE
HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
1. Flammable mixture. Keep away from heat, sparks or flame.
2. FIRST AID, If swallowed DO NOT induce vomiting, call physician immediately. In case of eye contact immediately flush thoroughly with water and call a physician. For skin contact wash thoroughly.
3. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing vapors or spray mist. It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner
inconsistent with its labelling. Reports have associated repeated and prolonged occupational overexposure to solvents with permanent brain and nervous system damage. If using in closed armory vaults lacking forced air ventilation wear respiratory protection meeting NIOSH TC23C or
equivalent. Keep container tightly closed when not in use.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING "Ed's Red (ER)" Bore Cleaner:
1. Open the firearm action and ensure the bore is clear. Cleaning is most effective when done while the barrel is still warm to the touch from firing. Saturate a cotton patch with bore cleaner, wrap or impale
on jag and push it through the bore from breech to muzzle. The patch should be a snug fit. Let the first patch fall off and do not pull it back into the bore.
2. Wet a second patch, and similarly start it into the bore from the breech, this time scrubbing from the throat area forward in 4-5" strokes
and gradually advancing until the patch emerges out the muzzle. Waiting approximately 1 minute to let the bore cleaner soak will improve its action.
3. For pitted, heavily carbon-fouled "rattle battle" guns, leaded revolvers or neglected bores a bronze brush wet with bore cleaner may be used to remove stubborn deposits. This is unnecessary for smooth,
target-grade barrels in routine use.
4. Use a final wet patch pushed straight through the bore to flush out loosened residue dissolved by Ed's Red. Let the patch fall off the jag without pulling it back into the bore. If you are finished firing, leaving the bore wet will protect it from rust for 1 year under average
conditions.
5. If the lanolin is incorporated into the mixture, it will protect the firearm from rust for up to two years. For longer term storage I recommend use of Lee Liquid Alox as a Cosmolene substitute. "ER" will readily remove hardened Alox or Cosmolene.
>>
>>29330850
6. Wipe spilled Ed's Red from exterior surfaces before storing the gun. While Ed's Red is harmless to blue and nickel finishes, the acetone it contains is harmful to most wood finishes.
7. Before firing again, push two dry patches through the bore and dry the chamber, using a patch wrapped around a suitably sized brush or jag. First shot point of impact usually will not be disturbed by Ed's Red if the bore is cleaned as described.
8. I have determined to my satisfaction that when Ed's Red is used exclusively and thoroughly, that hot water cleaning is unnecessary after
use of Pyrodex or military chlorate primers. However, if bores are not wiped between shots and shots and are heavily caked from black powder fouling, hot water cleaning is recommended first to break up heavy fouling deposits. Water cleaning should be followed by a thorough flush with Ed's Red to prevent after-rusting which could result from residual
moisture. It is ALWAYS good practice to clean TWICE, TWO DAYS APART whenever using chlorate primed ammunition, just to make sure you get all
the corrosive residue out.

This "Recipe" is placed in the public domain, and may be freely distributed provided that it is done so in its entirely with all current revisions, instructions and safety warnings included herein, and that proper attribution is given to the author.

I recommend printing off the recipe and warning label info and keeping it with the mixed product, especially if it is to be used in a work environment.

This stuff works, which means it is actually a little toxic, unlike the useless (at least for cleaning) vegetable oil crap usually sold to gullible fudds for $15 an ounce.

Keep the label handy in case you get it in your eye or some other place It shouldn't be.

Get some hoppes #9 for oil and use CLP for cleaning purposes.

Also, I use 3" magnum buckshot / hollow point slugs for home defense. Tube + chamber loaded, safety on.
I also don't have kids. If you're worried about children, get a safe that will prevent them from getting in, or keep it in a place they don't have access to.

As a child, my parents let me and my siblings see guns anytime, the only condition being that we always asked.
It satisfies the cusiousity of a kid and helps them understand

Make sure the gun is not blued.

If the gun is blued, then the blue finish will come off if you use ATF.

Blued steel is apparently a rusting process and ATF is a great anti-corrosive.

You need to find the right oil for your temperature too (for me I use 10w-30).

Mix a 50/50 solution of that and some people add turpentine and that basically makes CLP that's 2x as good a much much cheaper.

If you got it for home defense, you maybe need to consider getting a safe that you can open quickly instead of using a lock on the gun. Then that would be an acceptable state to have the gun in, but you might as well just have one in the chamber ready to go, with the safety on.

Empty chamber is completely legit in home defense situation.
It's not like cc where you may need to draw and fire immediately.
In home defense you are already going to have to retrieve your firearm from where ever it is and you'll probably have time to do so because of being alerted by suspicious noise.
Chambering a round will take relatively no time
>>
>>29331909

I have a Mossberg 500 (7+1 security model), it was one of the first guns I bought.

I've got probably ~500 rounds through it, I've never cleaned it, and I've never had a problem with it.

I worked in firearms for just over three years, and the only times I ever saw a problem with a Mossberg was a couple of police training shotguns that got traded into us. They must have had untold tens of thousands of rounds through them. The finish was completely gone, but they were in overall serviceable shape besides a couple of internal cracks that put them out of service.

So basically, no it's just fine.
>>

She needs to step up and face life or take herself out of it. I hate people who make their problems other peoples problems. I'm willing to help those who help themselves not self entitled dipshits, anon you deserve better, you should not feel like shit for buying a shotgun, it is something as an American citizen you are entitled to. Do not let your cunt sister deprive you of your rights.

That's a good price. How are the staff at cabella's?
>>
1. yes
2. no, trigger locks make your "time to employ" long enough that if anybody comes crashing into your house you'd really struggle to get it off in time (in the dark, with adrenaline, etc). Side note, that's called "condition 3" if you want to be a tacti-cool gun guy. Condition 1 is cocked and locked safety off(or no safety). Condistion 2 is cocked and locked with safety on (as is common with many single action only pistols). Condition 3 is safety off, magazine loaded, empty chamber (commonly used for shotguns and open bolt firearms (ie. uzis back when the secret service used them))
3. Maybe. If you ask many firearms "experts" they'll tell you that spring fatigue can occur due to constant compression, however engineering principles tell us that spring fatigue comes from repeated compression and release over many cycles. The caveat to this is that engineers can't give an easy explanation for dead springs in magazines which have been loaded for a long time.

They don't just grow knowledge out of nowhere, you have to teach them.

I know, I meant that they've experienced enough generally (movies, games, books, etc) to know that guns are for killing shit dead.

I was seven, and I stood with my legs together.

My grandfather laughed his ass off at me. I miss him tbqh -_-

I've been looking at a Stevens as well.

Heard they're basic as fuck but a decent shotgun

That's the one thing that always mystifys me I always thought since I was young it was a bad idea to point a loaded gun at my friend johhny. Why do we have 13 year old kids accidentally shooting their friends are they really that stupid they cant understand a concept that I did when I was 8 in a no gunz home
>>
>>29337297
I say you should teach them that guns dont just kill but can be fun and relaxing to shoot and its a perfectly fine hobby.
>>
>>29337247
Very helpful, very to-the-point. Mostly older folk at my shop though (mid 40s to 50s) and even the younger staff seem like they can figure shit out okay.

This is what I've always told myself during shower thinky time. "I can't let her control my life like that, I could rent that room out and make money, I gotta take a stand!"

But she's my little sister, and I'm not gonna just cut her off like that, especially with the end so close in sight.

She's not a bad person, I think it's just that she hooked up with bad people during her high school years and got her into some bad fucking habits and connections. I just don't want to risk fucking it all up for her (not to mention that our parents would never forgive me)

Buy a wing-one thrower. Trust me it's worth the $30.
Buy two boxes of clays (don't pay more than $13 for a box)
Buy a case of cheap herters trap loads (~$55)

Go find some BLM land or find some farmland (a 12 pack of beer is often enough payment to get the to owner let you shoot on it) and start blasting away with your kids

If you're really paranoid make one of those anti-muzzle sweep things out of pvp pipes so you don't get a chest full of shot

Make sure to clean up after yourself

I just saw one of those sell for $159 on gunbroker and it got me interested. Are there any good wood furniture kits for it? Looks like a good shotgun but I hate black plastic.

i had no idea that ordnance disposal used handheld x-ray tubes and casettes to look inside of packages

I'm an x-ray tech and this is beyond fascinating.

>Sister's a meth addict

I hate to break this to you Anon, but you don't have a Sister anymore. You have something that sorta looks like your sister, but a tiny bit different. That's all.

my moss 500, bought 4 days ago on buds for $350, not too bad
>>
>>29337615
Cool, I'll start doing that. Gotta make some farmer friends n shit

>>29337648
From what I've read, any Mossberg 500 or 535 furniture should fit on here. Haven't tried it, of course.

Thanks, feels good to join the club.

How is the recoil with that grip angle? I was thinking of getting a mossy 20 gauge to throw a pistol grip on and have fun with... 20 because I did not enjoy the only pistol grip 12 gauge I've ever fired, but it was more of a vertical angle than that.
>>
Hey OP, does your shotgun feel solid? I've always heard these were shitty and rattle a lot.
>>
>>29338056
the forends on mossbergs wobble its what they do and part of why its so reliable
>>
>>29338047

The birds head grip is the way to go if you are looking for something stockless. I bought this because I couldn't stand my stock pistol grip either, but I could fire 00 with this all day without anything in the way of pain.

I'm using the raptor technology grip that was like 25 bucks, but you can always just saw down a wooden stock too. It is pretty damn great
