Mounted, those Maxims are still totally viable as weapons in a modern battle. Worst case scenario of that is difficulty finding spare parts that may not exist.
>>
>>29327618

I am not disputing that, but it does show the state of the Ukr military.
>>
>>29327618

Judging from the amount of maxims they seem to have from the videos posted here, I'd say spare parts likely aren't a huge problem.

They might not be able to manufacture new parts, but if they've just got a heap of old Maxims lying around then they've probably got a stock of spares somewhere too.

fact of the matter is, it was part of the russian empire for the last numerous centuries. the currently disputed area was until about the 50s administered from moscow as part of the russian soviet. administration was moved to the ukranian soviet basically as a beauracratic exercise of convenience, hence why most people in crimea are ethnic russians.

basically, the russians have as much claim to crimea as the modern ukranian republic. there are really no good historical arguments, other than a soviet internal reorganization, as to why crimea belongs to kiev and not moscow.

yeah, i was pretty suprised when i found this out myself.

Ukraine is a uniate invention created to destroy the unity of Russia. It was created due to the Polish occupation of these territories of Russia that came under Polish rule after the Mongol Invasions. Ukraine was invented by Russians who were westernized by the Poles as well as the Austrians. The backbone of Ukrainian nationalism is and was composed of people opposed to an Orthodox Russian nation either because they were uniate or because they were political liberals opposed to monarchy and church-state symphonia.

this graph is retarded, everyone except for maybe the 6th of the map in the West side mainly speaks Russian.
that side with Lviv being the epicenter of that bullshit is where all the ultranationalists come from, they used to be a butt of jokes, running around forests playing militia, now they finally have their day and they're going apeshit with it

like >>29328367 said
the whole "let's learn Ukrainian" hasn't started since independence in 1991 and even then it was just a fad. the real "nationalism" bullshit began with scarface and the orange revolution.
most of these nationalistic politicians can barely speak Ukrainian without slipping in Russian pronunciations, it's pretty hilarious to watch them try and be ultranationalist and boggle the language
>the people in Kiev now speak Ukrainian at work because they're told to or afraid of neo-nazi scum ruling the streets, but at home everyone talks in Russian like they always have
>the people in Lviv hate and always hated everyone East of Lviv and consider them "moskals" -- Ukrainian sell-outs to Russia. they speak a mixture of classical Ukrainian (as in the language of Taras Shevchenko) and Polish, because though they don't like to admit it, they are basically half-Poles

tl;dr, it's all bullshit and fake divides now made real though continuous warfare, once you've killed for "your side" and "they" killed your friends, you really do hate them and they you.
>>
>>29328799

Is the Panzer III the best German tank of WWII? It's outlasted just about all of its bretheren at this point.

Sounds like a hell of a good reason for a war. Hopefully we can get the same thing over here in 'muerrica.

it's kind of an ass-backwars reasoning though, senpai

you basically tell people they hate each other, when they don't and have been living peacefully not really seeing much difference between each other for centuries
you throw a couple false flags up and force a few situations where they are divided, you spin all those in the media and either send your army to attack newly branded outlaws (have to obey orders) or provoke said outlaws into attack
you now have a conflict in which both sides are reluctant to fight one another.
pump both sides with propaganda, keep forcing them into situations where they have to fight, add artillery where soldiers are reluctant to shoot at the enemy. enemy now hates you for destroying their homes and killing their friends, they start shooting your friends, you now hate them, you start shooting them, etc.

and that's how you make a war and create ethnic hatered out of nothing

>Hopefully we can get the same thing over here in 'muerrica.

It's one of those cultural backlash things. During the Soviet era everyone was supposed to speak Russian, and Ukrainian fell by the wayside in official use.

Now they are trying to make Ukrainian common again as a way to reestablish national identity and separate themselves from the Russians.

The part about being "half-poles" isn't suprising at all considering that much of western Ukraine used to be Poland, given to Ukraine to compensate for the eastern half being given to the Russian SSR.

>>

>Ukraine's cause

>>
>>29331119
Honest, serious answer? Yes.
It didn't see as much use later in the war ONLY because the turret ring wasn't wide enough to accomodate bigger, modern anti tank guns (so, the long 75mm ones) but other than that it was the best armored vehicle Germany made in WWII. Which is why the hull was used and abused at every turn, with StuG III production running well into the end of the war.
>>
>>29332938

I'm not a total Panzerhead, but I was under thw impression that by the later years of conflict the Pz IV was essentially just a Pz III with a slightly larger hull for a better turret ring.

What was the III doing that the later IV hadn't at least matched?

The Pz III had a better suspension system, torsion bars instead of leaf springs, which was a huge difference in a world where, when it was designed, everyone was still sticking to springs.

Plus it was wider and shorter, which I think makes for a more balanced and stable firing platform.

Germany didn't modernize the Pz III because, when you're in a full scale conflict, you can't just throw away hundreds of hulls. They had to work with the cheapest and quickest option, which wasn't re-engineering the Pz III hull, but just making new turrets for the Pz IV.

It's a defensive mechanism.

As the maxim fires, the water inside cools the barrel by transferring heat away from it. This in turn rapidly heats the water and brings it to a steaming hot boil the longer the weapon fires.

In the event the enemy gets too close and the crew needs to reposition, they they throw this lever that further excites the maxim. Large vents along the top open up and the emplacement ejaculates massive amounts of steam from the boiling water inside to create a smoke-screen to enable to crew and the now spent weapon to wheel away to another location.
