Whats the best mountain gun? I'm thinking of getting a 4 inch 629 but was wondering if you guys think theres something better. Preferably in the same price range or lower
Bought a Ruger GP100. Definitely gonna be what I'm packing when I'm out in the hills from now on

Fine choice.
>>29304911
This too.
Overall, .44mag is probably the best mountain caliber

I really want a 44 mag so no animal can fuck on me

6 inch.
329PD. Light and doesn't hurt that much with my 240 gr .44 mag loads.
>>29304884
Look to the ruger Alaskan or redhawk. A bit cheaper and extremely durable.
>>29305916
I have never met one who enjoys shooting one.
A .45 LC or .44 Special with hard cast slugs will do almost as well.
>>29305875
So the gp100 is .357 so is s&w the only 4inch .44 mag out there that's worth a damn?
Glock 20, 29, or 40
>>29305959
I think you're right
>>29304884
I'm currently in the same boat. I was thinking .44 mag, S&W 629 5", but Im also strongly considering a G20, 10mm. I'm leaning toward the 629 cause I dont have a revolver yet.
Whats the best handgun for The Revenant tier grisly bear?
>>29306410
>mountain gun
>not choosing a revolver
I'll be laughing when your pistol jams and that bear is ripping your face off
>>29307920
Bear spray. For bear defense, shooting a charging bear with a handgun has a 66% success rate. Bear spray has a 98% success rate, according to a report that accounted for all bear attacks from the 80s to present day.

I don't know it's been many years, but I'm pretty sure my numbers are accurate. Just Google gun vs bear spray. It was done by some University in Minnesota I think.
>>29309459
>revolvers never jam meme
>>29304884
I bought the Governor. I hear it's a great snake gun due to shotgun shells, but I honestly bought it for the memes.
I also own a meatball so meme guns must be my thing.
>>29309459
It's like you think I don't own both.
i've got a 6 inch Ruger GP100 for my innawoods carry, loaded with 200gr. hardcasts.
there's really only 2 threats that i perceive having to deal with when hiking in my neck of the woods, black bear, and cougar, more so the cougar than the black bear, we had a BIG cat prowling near camp a while back, but im confident that a 200gr .357 (plus whatever else friends are carrying) would do the job.
so my vote goes to that, but it really depends on where you are geographically and what threats you perceive. im a fan of rugers just for being built like a tank and being able to run super hot loads, also factor barrel length, a short barrel might be lighter to carry but you sacrifice velocity.

since it is a new production smith, does that have the shitty internal lock on it?
>>29306083
Guess you have always known pussies. I love my .44s
Last resort bear gun? .460 S&W. Also shoots .454 Casull & .45 Colt.
That gives you a lot of options and allows you to pair it with a leveraction guide gun.
A 10mm Auto isn't bad either.
>>29309459
>I'll be laughing when your pistol jams and that bear is ripping your face off
A good quality pistol is just as, if not more, reliable than a revolver.
Pic for lulz, though I'd suggest at least 4".
>>29304884
smith and Wesson .357 with nothing but iron sights
>anything less than 5 inches on a revolver
>>29304884
I carry either a Witness in 10mm (buffalo bore hardcast flatnose) or a SP101 (same)
Unless I am somewhere I need to conceal, then it's a Radom P-64 (FMJ)
>>29309466
Does that study account for all times a handgun was used, even if it was just like a .22lr plinker? Or does it only count "suitable" calibers used?
>>29311181
If you're referring to that internal lock with the little keyhole above the cylinder release latch, then yes.
Doing a little research, does it actually malfunction sometimes? Should I remove the internals to it??
What's a decent pistol caliber for mountain cats (cougars) and coyote?
>>29312072
I have one and I wouldn't worry about it. Some guy with an AOL email address makes plugs that he machines but I'm not sure if he's doing it anymore.
>>29313220
I recognize those grips...
>>29311237

absolutely correct friend
>>29304884
If you're in the northeast or southwest .357 can be a good option, especially with hot hand loads.
18" marlin guide gun in .45-70
>>29313340
I almost used that pic but the one I did shows all the cartridges it shoots.
>>29313447
Would that safely chamber any .410 too? Would it cycle right?
>>29313467
lel, I also have the one where you killed a bird with it, near the stump with the snow.
No homo, but you got me out using my Governor every time I went out into the big bad wild near my house.
By the way, is there a somewhat easy way to use those moonclips outside that shitty "tool" that they usually come with? I really want to use .45 ACP to plink with but god damn it's a pain in the ass.
>>29309630
>governor
>not taurus judge for 300% memier
>>29312072
the best anyone can say with any certainty is that they may malfunction sometimes, how likely is up for grabs.
my personal opinion is that i would not want an unneeded failure point in a revolver, that is also fucking ugly.
I carry my S&W 629 4". Have only ever shot charging boar with it. They drop and squeal around for a few minutes. I usually teabag them before I put them out of their misery. Stupid fuckers better go charge a liberal treehugging backpacker.
G40 MOS with an RMR ontop.
Good for bears, mt lions and meth heads.
>>29306410
What S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mod is this?
>>29313557
I haven't done much ptarmigan hunting because of no snow. The moon clips are a pain in the ass and I hate them. They go on ok but it's a bitch getting them off.
>>29309466
I bet a lot of the handgun users were incompetent. Handguns are easier to fuck up than bear spray. Wish they could survey only competent users or something
Carrying both is a good idea, though.
>>29313819
>not Raging Judge Magnum
Smith should just make a .460 Governor already, get out ahead of the obvious .45/.410 logical progression.
>implying you wouldn't want a gun that can handle .460 S&W and all less .45s (which is all of them)
>AND .410 HD loads which are essentially factory made duplex rounds
Handloading duplex is haaard.

All with the best bear cartridges offered by Buffalo Bore or Garret.
