What happened to the silent professional thing, /k/? There are few games/movies about delta, but there's like a million movie/show/game for navy seals, navy seals this, navy seals that
What happened?

Seals seem to have been picked to be the golden boy, so as to take the heat off the other outfits. They were probably picked because Seals are like the SOF equivalent of marines, not particularly better than their counterparts but they have the best PR.
>>
>>29268499
>Seals are like the SOF equivalent of marines
Isn't that MARSOC?
>>
>>29268468
they killed bin laden and everyone got interested in them
the navy saw it as good PR so they rolled with it, and im sure some veteran don't mind the attention and recognition after years of injuries, PTSD, and having to shut up about it.

its not anything that new, people have always been sort of interested in it, the military channel used t have dozens of shows going inside ranger, green beret, force recon, Seal training. the SEALs egos just got amplified after Bin Laden
>>
>>29268527
>bin laden
>dead
good goy
>>
>>29268518
>MARSOC
>SOF
They wish.
I meant more from a public persona perspective than an operational one though. Seals have the same aura of mysticism that the marines have in the public conscience.
>>
>>29268518
That's not what he is talking about. It was an awkwardly worded sentence,

As in, the Marines are no more elite than your average 11Boot in the Army, but they have garnered that reputation over the years with good PR and fancy dress uniforms.

The SEALs aren't muh top 1% of 1% of fighting forces, but muh Chris Kyle muh Marcus Luttrell muh movies and muh various books and depictions of training etc. have created the myth that surrounds them
>>
>>29268499
>>29268568
I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees this.
>>
>>29268568
You really implying force recon aint shit?
>>
>>29268686
he didn't say that. he said average grunt and average 11b aren't that much different.
>>
>>29268725
the average 0311 is a little different than the average 11b. its a different mindset when you choose the branch.
>>
>>29268759
one branch treats you like a 2 year old, the other treats you like a 10 year old.
>>
May be wrong but I was under the impression that a lot of people hated Chris Kyle as well for essentially fucking that mentality of "silent professionals"
>>
>>29268527
If anyone deserves full credit for the Osama hit it's probably the SOG branch of the SAD CIA guys, that's the spooky black ops guys with no patches, no names, no cable ties, and no remorse in their eyes.

So their mystique and aura goes anyway.
>>
I don't live in America, but our best special forces started out as super duper secret and its existence was only known to a few people in government and the military. Then if you fast forward to today it's a unit everyone knows about and every dude wish they served in.

The military just decided to be a lot more public about their special units and let the public get some insight. Now they're part of propaganda and politics. And I think we aren't the only ones doing this shit.
I think it's for propaganda purposes. They want public opinion of these guys to be very good. They don't want the public to mistrust them.
>>
>>29268468
Probably a combination of
>keeping the focus on the SEALS so the other units don't get scrutiny
>SEALS tend to be the loud assholes who brag about shit like this

Probably started as the former, and the military recognized this and decided to capitalize on it.
>>
>>29268759
elaborate please.
>>
SEALs are just a ploy to get people to join the Navy; American ships are manned by BUD/S dropouts.
>>
>>29268759
>>29268725
Recon is under marsoc now no? There's a pretty big difference between a grunt a machine gunner and any force recon marine. Yes mindset is a big difference, let me re iterate BIG difference. You mention it like it's nothing but it's all the difference. I barely know anything but you guys know less than nothing.
>>
>>29268468
Motivation.
This units need people. To get people, they use pop media to spread the word and draw the interest of people that didn't think about it before. Notice that they never publicize anything truly sensitive- only publicly known events and cool stories that don't cause any practical OpSec offenses.
There is much more to it, including a lot of debates within the armies themselves and different perceptions on the role of PR in modern PW and own public, but that's the simplified tl:dr.
>>
>>29268825
that's why the SEALs got the majority of the credit. even though they like to lay low, SAD CID are the ones who REALLY need to be kept on the down low. SEALs acted as muscle but get the credit so black ops can keep doing black ops things
>>
>>29268468
Because in pop culture, Navy Seals are considered the best of the best of the best... sir
>>
>>29268846
What country may I ask?

It kinda sounds like mine but I've been away for a while so this super media friendly thing might be recent (they were more open than before but not incredibly so before I left).
>>
>>29268568
>marines
>aura of mysticism

Marines are fucking idiots. All of them.
>>
>>29268968
Norway. Just look at how FSK went from obscure unit hidden from the public, today there are ads to join FSK and they were featured in a video game among other things.
>>
>>29268468

Well OP, we delve into the realm of hollywood and pop culture and the ever changing landscape of warfare itself.

SEAL test can be taken over and over and over again, are much more of a will than anything else, this is reason number one.

Number two, the changes of modern warfare, and tactics. Wars are not fought anymore on larger scales, two armies facing each other, the world can't take this kinda of shit anymore, it affects too much of every aspect of society and it is costly as fuck. No, now we fight using small units tactics, proven to be effective since WW1. This leads to number three. Since now wars are fought mainly with highly capable, highly trained operatives, they need MORE people, way more.

Delta is a mistery, there is diversity before leftism was rampant, you can find tall guys, small guys, chubby dudes, skinny dudes there, what they seek only they know. And also, this guys, regardless of how they look, are all Tier 1 guys. Using SEAL's and it's huge numbers as muscle, you can use Delta for more sensitive stuff.

There is plenty of other units that we hardly heard or see about it on pop culture.

>Probably started as the former, and the military recognized this and decided to capitalize on it.

The Navy does have the best PR of all the branches. Look at how they used Top Gun to their advantage.

I have heard that disciplinary issues are common with SEALs.

You have literally no idea what you're talking about day/k/are

Exactly- does anyone really think a CIA OP (finding Osama) WOULDNT directly involve the CIA at the 5-yard line?

My buddy thinks he saw a spook once, second hand of course:

>be on base in AFG
>new Comms guy coming in, just a lieutenant or something
>rides in helicopter alone, quiet type, keeps to himself but would always keep an eye on everyone. Razor burn indicates he had a beard just a day ago.
>always asks really specific questions to the specialists, is insanely detail oriented and you always had a feeling he remembered every word you said.
>is about 5-years older than he should be but isn't a fuckup, so no one knows why he is "held back".
>walks up to shooting range as everyone is doing drills with extra ammo
>sets up at end of range BLAMBLAMBLAM
>proceeds to dump from his M4 in less than 10 seconds, for a POG his groupings are basically supernatural.
>everyone staring at him like Obi Wan in the cantina after he cut that dudes arm off
>quietly gets up, leaves without saying a word.

The final tip off to my buddy:
>saw spook talking to brigadier alone in office
>can't hear what spook and brigadier are talking about! but at one point the brigadier told him to do something and the spook said "no.". Bragadier was visibly frustrated but nothing came of it.
>spook dissapears days after some bomb maker is scratched off in a raid.

My buddy could be bullshitting me though.
