So a fun shop in town is having a S&W sale this weekend. 686's going for $649 with a free action job. Any reason I shouldn't get one? Also 3", 4", or 6" barrel?

I've been looking at a 686 for a while now. The only other revolver in my collection is an old Ruger Super Blackhawk.

its quality that is heirloom capable and will last your entire lifetime. i say get it, i'd like one too at some point. i love the full barrel underlug look. have shot one before, very smooth. i own a couple of older s&w's, can't go wrong with them. as far as barrel length, that depends on what you want to do with it. i would say 4 or 6 inch. i think it's a little bit too heavy and antiquated for ccw, there are better ccw options. 4" is a perfect compromise for better handling and balanced carry. 6" makes for a very smooth shooter with the extra kick in velocity.

first off the python has a mediocre trigger, while the 686 has one of the best triggers in the revolver game. The python cost an ass load, and the only thing that separates it from any other revolver is because it looks fantastic.

The lock is stupid, and the reason it's there is bullshit.
That being said, I don't think it's a big deal. My S&W has one, and I don't like it but it is tiny and doesn't impede function or anything
I bought this because I wanted a 686 but was poor as fuck and bad with money. So I settled on the Dan Wesson my local shop had for stupid cheap. I couldn't pass it up.

What happened to the 581 and 681? I liked the fact that the sights were simple.
The 686's are probably better guns and some can hold 7 rounds instead of 6 but I still love the 586 a lot more.

No get the 4 if you already have a super black hawk you already have your hand cannon, the 4 inch is more versatile than the 6 or 3, you don't loose as much velocity or the sight radius as the 3 and its more handy than the 6
Overall the best barrel length for a revolver that isn't a dedicated target or hunting gun is 4 inches

they are not bad guns, but theyre value only comes from a collectors view point. aside from that there are better or equal quality revolvers for the same price.

I want a 686 Plus damn badly, the plus being the model with a 7-round capacity. I've done a ton of research and grilled my dad who never seems to run out of new revolvers to bring to the range, and it seems to me that the 686 is a pretty optimal blend of price and quality. They also feel fantastic in the hand.
