Most spear guns are designed to be fired underwater, I'd be careful about buying one for surface use. You're going to want something longer than that babby jbl though.

iirc spear guns don't fire correctly outside of water because they're designed to "swim" through fluid and without water beneath the spear to "help against gravity" (don't know how else to explain) it falls quickly

I've heard (never actually seen it) that if you fire it on land it reaches the end of it's cord the blunt end (which is still enough to injure you) comes flying back in your direction. What you said actually makes a lot of sense
