Hi-Points work, some people swear by them. They tend to be reliable, wouldn't carry hollow points with it though until you did some research on what brand it likes best.

A friend of mine bought one, and just for shits and giggles decided to not ever clean it and see how long it took to fail. Other than some FTFs during the break in, he didn't start having problems until about 6 months and a few hundred rounds later.

Yes and no, the ejector is the firing pin so you aren't supposed to cycle live ammo through it because the ejector is the firing pin.
It's not going to explode on its own. Hell, you're supposed to use stronger ammo to get it to cycle.
Use 124gr or heavier ammo, +P when possible, and don't cycle live ammo. Thank your girlfriend's dad for the gift.
