ITT: Things that were ahead of their time
The bat guided bomb, first deployed in 1945, was the first smart bomb to enter service, being capable of attacking targets via simple radar tracking.

Light armoured vehicle which is good to drive
>bat guided bomb
How does that work?
>>29161494
Bats were trained to associate the sonar return of a warship with being fed insects. Then, they were mounted in the nose of the bomb and dropped. When they detected a warship, they guided the bomb to it.

Look up Project Orcon (organic control).
It started with a Pigeon guiding system. 1 to 3 pigeons per bomb, would be trained to peck at an image on a small monitor or projection screen (of either optical readings or radar readings or a combination of both). The bomb would then adjust course to the pecked area.
It was useless near land, since there would be too much clutter, but at sea, it was semi-decent at finding ships since they stick out as hell on radar.

It was also shit.

How did the bats control the bomb?

It didn't use a bolt like most guns do. It was built more like a miniature artillery gun, with a falling block and a little hook that pulled rounds forwards into the chamber before the block rose back into place.

Just like they did the Batplane, silly.
Jesus hopscotching Christ on a pink pogo stick, there were no fucking bats. They just called it that because it looked like a fucking bat.
Goddamnit, the autism.

I think they called it that because it worked like a bat, not because it looked like one. It doesn't really look like a bat.
