Hey guys, I've gotten into backpacking, and I've been wanting a better option for a rifle to carry with me.

I've been carrying an 870 recently, but it's a bit too awkward keeping in my rifle loops in my pack.

I've been looking at 45-70 guide guns. The barrel size looks perfect and that bullet hits like a truck.

What do you guys carry on over night hunting/back packing trips ?

Just a 9mm pistol. With some CCI snake shot and hunting HP. My hope is it'll just be loud enough to scare off big critters.
>>
SAW
>>
>>29128827
I just use an Sks. Light weight, cheap, easy to maintain.
>>
>>29128827
Oh for hunting, shit man not an sks
>>
>>29128827
Can't go wrong with a .357 Rossi, or AR pistol/rifle in 9mm
>>
Marlin 336Y. .30-30 lever in carbine size. Great truck/backpacking gun.
>>
>>29128827
I use a Marlin 45-70 GBL. I like to have the extra two rounds over the four.
>>
>>29131711

How do you like it, I was thinking about picking one up
>>
>>29131854
Pretty good, handles very hot loads like a champ and is short/light enough to easily carry.
>>
>>29128827
I have a .22 LR/12 gauge over under. It has a simple mechanism, easy to carry, small game/ mid-sized game potential, didn't cost me that much.
>>
I've been looking in to a Marlin in 44. Any of you annons have experience in 44 lever guns?
>>
>>29132279
I've only ever shot Henry 44s, but I've shot marlin 30-30s and love them both
>>
>>29132279
Old marlins are god tier lever guns. Newer ones can be a touch hit or miss.

Source: spent 4 months last year trying to return a faulty 336 to Remington, bought a '68 336 with the refund. Saved two hundred dollars, replaced the hammer spring, and it gives me 1in groups at 100 yards.

>35 rem a best for brush cartridges.
>>

>sks
>lightweight

Are you sure
>>
>>29132605
They are not light, you are correct.

I think they are decent woods gun though, as they are on the short side and easy to maneuver.

And built in stabby.
>>
I pack a .357 for the desert, and a .44mag in the mountains.
>>
>>29128827
marlin is WAY too light for a 45-70, a .44 mag would beat the shit out of you.
>>
I forgot I owned an IMI Timberwolf. .357 mag pump carbine. I think that'll be perfect

>when you have so many guns you forget you own a rare classic Israeli brush gun

Woe is me
>>
>>29134814
I have nearly that exact gun, you're just a pussy. My handloads hit like a spicy 12-gauge.
It's the gun you save for last when shooting though, it'll cut your trip short.
>>
what part of the country are you backpacking?

44 magnum is sufficient for nearly all animal encounters in the lower 48.
>>
>>29135643
Not griz, my man. Even 45-70 isn't quite the confidence booster you'd like.
One of those .458 win mag garands would be enough gun, in my opinion. I'd want a .454 casull at my hip though.
>>
>>29128827
stick with the guide gun op, shes an excellent bush/ hiking carry gun

I go with one of these depending on the area
>>
AR with 3 spare mags and a .22
>>
>>29128827
yeah, a marlin guide gun is excellent OP

i plan on getting one for back packing myself. Glock 20s are also great with some buffalo bore 10mm
>>
>>29128854
Not just carrying something that could both scare OR kill animals.
Fucking pussy.
>>
>>29135669
How dat SU be?
>>
>>29134814
3030 definitely kills my shoulder when I shoot Mah 336. I guess I just like the abuse.
>>
Why limit yourself to a century old design?
Bring a semiauto.
>>
>>29132279
if you get a good one theyre wonderful die to the ejection and loading gate vs a henry and ive always liked the marlin over the winchester for some reason.

A few things though
I never shot well with buckhorns
they wont take the heavy bullets without modification
just because that JM stamp is on the barrel doesnt mean it wont be trouble so always check the gun out before buying. the 1894s are expensive as fuck now sadly

What a pussy. 45-70 is a ton of fun offhand. Kind of sucks from a rest but still a good time.
>>
AK. Any other answer is wrong.
>>
>>29135655
lets back up here anon. go back and reread all the stupid shit you just said, then find your mistakes
>>
>>29137814
dat SU be light, low recoil, fun. shootys 223 and 556 bretty godo
>>
>>29131854
I own one too.>>29131893 is spot on, but:

The default sights are horrendous. Be ready to buy new sights. My front sight post was way too short, like shooting 2 feet high at 50 yards short. Moving parts need polishing for a smoother action.
>>
for a real hiking/camping gun have a handgun on you, and a takedown rifle in your bag.
>>
I usually sling my m44 over my shoulder and go.

>recoils to much

Are you 8? That is literally the only excuse for this nonsense.

The people in this thread claiming that marlin's have too much recoil in ANY caliber that IS NOT 45-70 are straight up weenies.

Hell, 45-70 isn't even that bad, but I can understand why some people don't like that.
