Nogunz here. Went shooting back in September, got hooked on it. Looking for a really cheap gun to start out with. Has to be under 300, pref under 250. For now, just target shooting. Pic related, what I'm thinking of, simply because it's cheap and fairly reliable.

Why not get a Makarov?

Zastava makes factory new Tokarev clones in 9mm
>>
So im new with guns can someone explain to me why hi-points are so hated? I googled what they are and i dont understand whats so bad with them
>>
>>28922320

Buy an M57.
>>
>>28922376
They're cheap and they work most of the time. It gets annoying for some people when they learn their $500 pistol is no better than a $150 chunk of plastic.
>>
>>28922376
Basically because they are nigger guns. There isn't anything wrong with them functionally except they're ugly as sin. Obviously you aren't getting a precision instrument, but it will be reliable.
>>
>>28922359
The 9mm version has problems.
But from what I've seen with the regular 7.62x25 versions, they function just fine for a $250 service handgun

Buy a surplus handgun. Buy a .32 auto for like $199 on aim surplus or something. Cz 75 copies can be had for cheap as well for usually under $320 and they're built to last. Tokarevs can be had pretty cheap also. Around $250ish

assuming this is not bait, cause we see threads like this a lot...

All guns are not the same, there are tons of different factors as to whether a gun is fun to shoot, accurate, or reliable. That being said, Hi-Points are looked down upon here because they are the cheapest new firearm you can purchase, and it is usually the symbol of new people or those who just want "a gun" without any knowledge whatsoever.

The hi-point will go bang when you pull the trigger. It will work, it wont kill you or anything, but you will get ridiculed for buying it simply because its the cheapest option.

Typically 400-500 is the best price to performance ratio for a handgun

The C9 is a great gun for the money.

You get a lot of gun for the money.

Also they are surprisingly accurate.

The warranty is awesome.

The grips from the factory suck but you can get textured grips from hipoint.

This. You can find a Ruger MK .22 pistol for pretty cheap at LGS and mainly pawnshops, I saw someone selling one near me on armslist the other week for 300 but it came with 1000 rounds of .22 lr. Great for first timers, plinking and target shooting.
>>
>>28922376

Because they're ugly and you can't conceal them well.

Even though they'll eat any and all ammo and are basically indestructible and accurate.
>>
What's the best pistol to vet for 300-400? Also I really want a mauser how much do they cost?

A hipoint is the way to go.

Theyre just a good solid gun.

Can't afford 4-500 means you're not willing to save up for long enough and are impatient. Which is fine, but you CAN afford 4-500, it just takes longer to save.

If you want milsurp get a mosin, or an SKS.

Strictly speaking it's an EAA Witness clone.

But yeah it's a big-tier cheap handgun.
>>
>>28922320
>Has to be under 300, pref under 250.
1000 rounds of 9mm is going to run you ~250, so you're not ready to buy a gun.

You're gonna need about $1000 to get into rifles, then another $600 to get into pistols even with something as cheap as an SD9VE.
>>
>>28924355
Never owned one. A friend had one but since has sold it and bought a 1911. They do have a slide lock, the safety doubles as one.

And how the fuck does being straight blowback make any difference on the ammo it works with?

22 doesn't really count for getting into rifles. The literally negligible recoil doesn't exactly lend itself to developing your skills.

If you are buying ammo when you need it then you are doing it wrong. This is only more true with less common cartridges like 8mm Lebel.

Low velocity ammunition won't cycle right because the bolt/slide is too heavy because they're not locked breech in general

It's like running that shitty German .22lr through a 10/22.

But hipoints don't seem to have that issue unless you're using like subsonic .45 acp

They have pretty cheap shotguns and other stuff at Pawn Shops and stuff a lot of the time. Shooting skeet qualifies as target shooting.

And don't start. It's a relatively small quick target. It can't be too bad for preparing to shoot a guy in the face at a much smaller distance.

My reloads tend to be really close to the minimum loads and neither my blowback pistols nor my recoil operated pistols have had a problem excluding the time I messed around with downloading 9mm to .380 pressures (blowback gun still worked but it has a bolt a bit on the light side, recoil operated one didn't).

Pellet guns that look like pistols always strike me as a little daft.

If you want pellet hunting, get a rifle one.

If you wanna play pewpew with co2 canisters get an airsoft.

Only real use they have is low budget movie prop.

Pellet pistols do have the advantage of being a bit more powerful for plinking purposes and a bit more accurate, but I do agree that a good airsoft pistol is better for everything else especially for shooting inside due to their lower power and significantly being cheaper to feed.

M88A is a great starter gun.

Got mine for $180. Basically a compact Tokarev in 9mm. Was actually a military and police weapon for a short time. Shares some parts with original toks, and can handle +P.

Trigger is fair, but gets better after break in. Small enough to CC, and has an effective manual safety, but also rugged enough to take camping or leave in a glove box. The barrel is long enough that the pistol could fill a HD roll with some authority, too.

Capacity is a limiting factor, would love to get a drum mag.

It is implied that you're looking for a handgun, though you didn't specifically say so.

If you just want an entry-level plinker of any kind, Hi-Point's carbines are very fun and cheap, also chambered in common pistol cartridges and have reasonably cheap mags. They are ugly as sin, but are more fun than the similarly-ugly pistols from the same manufacturer, if you're going for super-cheap.

Unless you can make a better guide, some of the options here are decent enough for any gun owner on a budget. For home defense, a .22 is decent if you have a decent capacity magazine. The one's breaking into your home are probably too poor to afford body armor anyways. Unless you pissed off a cartel or something, then you are probably still going to die with your .223 or 7.62 rifle anyways. The blackpowder guns are thrown in there for humor.
