Hey /k/... so I came across this pic of an old Mosin-Nagant that's still being used in the war in Syria. It's 134 yr old and still going strong.

Are there any other old weapons still in (wide) use today?

Also, what does the writing in the pic say?
>>
>>28921022
there are some Maxim guns in use in Syria
guess that is the oldest
>>
>>28921022
Jezails have been found in Afghanistan and are probably 200-300 years old
>>
>>28921035
Maxim? damn. any idea what caliber it would use? how would they even find ammo for it?

>>28921060
Yeah, I heard about Afghanis using muskets. But those are really few & far in between. Not exactly common.

Maybe rebarrelled in x54r or 8mm? Just a theory.

7.62x54mmR like they have since 1905.

A PU probably is original; Russians made like 200,000 PU snipers during the war and most went into storage afterward and were handed out piecemeal to Cold War allies along with all the other old stuff they had lying around. That's probably how all those Stg.44s got to Syria.

Russia never throws anything away.

Unlikely. Far more M1905 and M1910 Maxims in 7.62x54R made than .303 guns. Russians were making them continuously for 40 years.

Where the fuck did they get all these cool weapons from?!?!?!?
>>
>>28921022
Pretty much any firearm produced in the last 120 years that fires cartridges utilizing smokeless powder can be found in the hands of local militias and insurgents in the Middle East.

Enfields, Mosins and other mass produced weapons used in WW1 and 2 are pretty common

Surprisingly few Lebels, or French firearms in general.

Finland still builds new sniper rifles off Mosin receivers.

Most likely were captured by the Soviets at the end of the war. They had no use for them so they sent them to Syria for use in a proxy war. The Syrians didn't really have use for them either as AKs were flowing out of the USSR into client states before too long. So they sat in a warehouse somewhere until it got captured by rebels who finally had a use for them, though ammo availability probably still limits their use.

why are you surprised? that mosin is probably more effective than homeboys ak over there. especially from what ive seen of combat in syria. they all line up behind berms and shoot at other faggots lined up behind berms from like 500 yards away.

You guys are now aware that

>7.62x54R is the oldest military cartridge sill in worldwide service (since 1891)
>7.62x54R is the only rimmed cartridge still in service of a regular army (.303 anyone?)
7.62x54R is the cartridge with the biggest evolution (from round nose to a bazillion other bullets)

And I'm not even a slavboo, I just find that truly impressive.

The Islamic zealot is the oldest weapon in common use. It has a storied and nearly unbroken deployment history spanning over 1400 years.
>>
>>28922062
heh, i found an ak like this one in iraq once. that shit still fired too
>>
>>28921022
if we go by the line of thinking that the receiver is the actual weapon, then I'd say Tkiv 85 of Finnish Defence Forces; they use original Mosin-Nagant receivers, some of which may date back to as early as 1890s.
>>
>>28922003
the production runs of Tkiv 85 were finished a long time ago, I think, but yes they use original .ru receivers.

We found all sorts of weird shit in Afghan, lots of Mosin's floating around, plenty of WW1 era .303 Lee-Enfields, 1 or 2 Mauser 98's, the odd Martini-Henry dating back to around 1880s or so

Also get lots of Kabul and Khyber Pass 'specials' which are knock-offs of anything you can imagine from a 1911 .45 to a Mossberg shottie or an MP5.
>>
Helped NDS do a raid and we confiscated a Mosin-Nagant. Wouldn't be surprised if it was still in use today.

.45-70 is still used by the navy/coastguard in line throwing guns. It's blanks and not bullets, but the cartridge is still in use. That beats out 7.62x54r.
