About to pull the trigger on this, a little concerned spending this much on a knife. What are your thoughts.
>>
I'd get a Spyderco for half the price
>>
I have it OP
I wouldn't get but its very nice and its a great blade.
>>
If you just want a good knife you don't feel bad about abusing try

>Spyderco Tenacious
>Spyderco Resilience
>Kershaw Cryo
>Kershaw Blur
>Ontario RAT1/2

Depends how big you want it.
>>
>>28887643
I have a tenacious and want something just a little smaller in the pocket
>>
Grips are nice knives, go ahead and buy one.

One of these probably.
>>
>>28887616
This.
>>
>>28887948
How deep do these bury in the pocket? I've heard you can email benchmade and get a deep pocket clip if that is true how would it compare?
>>
>>28887867
>>28888006
Just get the Ambitious. It's the exact same thing as the Tenacious, but with a shorter blade and a shorter handle.
>>
>>28888006

Cryo
>Closed length: 3.75 in.

RAT 2
>Closed Length: 4.00 in.

Tenacious i s 4.45" when closed.

And yea I'm pretty sure Benchmade hands out clips like candy, just ask the support staff in an email.
>>
>>28887616
Yes. I have the spyderco and it's sharp af. Would absolutely slice a motherfucker...or anything else I need to cut. You know...uh....for practical purposes
>>
>>28887568
Get one, you have warranty like no other spydershit has,and you can order free pocket clips from them

$100 for a knife is nothing, dude

I love my mini grip

Get it with the thumb hole and the modified sheepsfoot blade, skip the thumb stud.
>>
>>28888087
Why the sheepsfoot?
>>
>>28888139
Cuts leather better.
>>
it's coool knife as many other Benchmades

Axis is great lock and that mini Grip is very compact edc

Spyderco now mostly is shit tier with shitty customer service, don't buy them

Well I'm going to get one but should I get one off Amazon or customize one from benchmade
>>
>>28887568

I have had a Mel Perdue Griptillian as my edc for 5+ years. It has been great, the axis lock is slick and the thing holds an edge. My only gripe is I wish it had g10 scales, but then again it would've been considerably more expensive.
>>
>>28887568
Very happy with my Grip, OP. IF I had to find something to bitch about its the finish on the pant clip wears off quickly but that's to be expected if you use it more than opening letters with. The axis lock makes it easy for me to open/close one handed, which at work sometimes is the case.
>>
>>28887867
Mini grip is thicker iirc, won't feel any better in the pocket
>>
>>28887616
This. I've had two spidercos for years and I've had no reason to buy any more knives

I have 5 full sized, and 2 minis. I love them.
But it depends on your preferences.
I think a grip is a fantastic way to explore benchmade knives and axis locks. To see if you like them.
I typically carry an adamas now. Or a Halo, depends on my mood.
>>
>>28887568

>extremely durable
>works flawlessly
>average looks, but it will grow on you
>very utilitarian (no fluff)
>mid-tier priced
>lifetime nearly-no-questions-asked warranty
>yet people hate them
>"ma shitty knife costs half as much but is 60% as good as the Benchmade, hurr durr value"

Griptilians are the Glock of pocket knives.
>>
>>28889057
I can get a way better, way more functional knife of equal if not better quality from Spyderco. For much less. Benchmade is stupidly overpriced for what it is. For a little more, I can get myself a ZT or any other better, higher end brand. For a little less, I can get just as much functionality and use out of it from any other brand. No real reason to get BM.
>>
>>28889057
>>average looks, but it will grow on you
What. I bought the mini griptilian because it's literally the only folding knife i've ever seen that doesn't look like total horse ass
>>
>>28889112

I'd like to see a specific example of a "more functional" knife of equal or better quality for $90.

Keep in mind, it must have equal or better grade steel, and an equally strong lock (ie: no liner locks).

I'm not trying to be rude or a dick, I'm just curious what you come up with.
>>
>>28889210
A Griptilian used to be the cost of a Spyderco Endura, i.e. 50-60 dollars.

Benchmade raised the prices on all their knives, so now a base Griptilian with zero changes in design or materials costs the same as an Endura with almost top-of-the-line material.

>>28888218
>Spyderco now mostly is shit tier with shitty customer service, don't buy them
u wot m8?
>>
How much more do the "super steels" cost vs some of the cheaper ones?
>>
>>28889210
Spyderco anything cuts better
>>
>>28889292

>Endura
>lock back
>pinned frame
>VG-10 steel
>as good as Griptilian

What? The Manix 2 is the only thing that comes close, and it's $90

>>28889404

That's not what was asked.
>>
>>28889486
>a knife that cuts better isn't a better knife.

You're stupid. There's nothing wrong with liking BM or Griptillians, but you're fucking stupid if you don't think that FFG leaf blades aren't inherently better knives. It can take just as much abuse and sharpens nicely.
>>
>>28887568
Benchmade no longer has an edge over its competition. Fine knife if you've money to burn and don't care, but if you're budgeting, look elsewhere.
>>
>>28889543
Where should one look?
>>
>>28889522

>poster asks for knife with specific features
>you say "any spyderco", completely ignoring the request of the post
>>
>>28889486
>lock back
Your point? Comparable strength and you don't have to worry about an Omega spring breaking.

>pinned frame
Just as sturdy as screw construction

>VG-10
Pretty damn close to 154-CM. Neither of them have a clear performance advantage over the other.

Now keep in mind that the Endura and the Griptilian used to cost exactly the same 2-3 years ago and the Griptilian's gotten more expensive without any changes to the knife while the Endura's stayed about the same price.
>>
>>28889609

>lock back

Inconvenient to use, and definitely not unbreakable. I've seen more broken lock backs than I have Omega springs, but that's just my own experience.

>Pinned frame

Can't be disassembled for cleaning, and will loosen eventually.

>VG-10

Benchmade's 154-CM is legendary in the industry, and nobody has ever said they were comparable (that I've read).

I guess all of the above could be considered preferences. The price thing is hard to dispute, but I see the Grip as a superior knife in almost every way. Both have shittastic handle material though.
>>
>>28889741
>Inconvenient to use
Matter of opinion.

> I've seen more broken lock backs
Not all lock backs are created equal. Since it's not a proprietary lock like the Axis Lock, there are a ton of brands that use it, meaning you see more broken lockbacks on account of there being more lockbacks to begin with.

>Can't be disassembled for cleaning, and will loosen eventually.
Cleaning is true, but the loosening aspect is an exaggerated problem. People have pinned knives going on 10+ years that are still perfectly usable.

>Benchmade's 154-CM is legendary in the industry
That's completely hype. Their 154CM isn't any different compared to Emerson or anybody else who uses it.

>and nobody has ever said they were comparable (that I've read).
You haven't read enough. 10 years ago VG10 and 154CM were pretty much the defacto premium stainless steels.

You may also be mixing up 154CM with CPM-154.
>>
>>28887568
I have two Benchmade and really like the axis lock.
The blade profile is good and the know is good but I would never pry anything with it, slicer only.

If the cost is a concern just get a cheaper knife though.

>>
>>28889926
Hey, I didn't buy this. For what it is though it is nice?
>>
>>28889916

This is usually the knife issued to a LOT of the U.S. armed forces. A roommate I had showed me his. He had it issued to him while he was deployed in Iraq. His knife had "character".

The same roommate also handed me 15 sand-riddled scratched-to-hell 30-round mags for my AR, and told me not to tell anyone where I got them from (I overhauled his knife for him).
>>
>>28887568
I just lost my mini griptillian. it had the modified sheepsfoot blade with the hole instead of a stud. really nice knife. not really sure if the price is justifiable though...
>>
I've been thinking about getting a custom grip with my return this year and I was wondering if it's worth it to shell out for the S30V metal. Any input?
>>
>>28890174

I prefer 154CM to S30V. Easier to sharpen, and takes a nicer edge. Doesn't hold it as long as S30V, but touch ups are vastly quicker.
>>
Since when did everyone get so damn picky about steels in general? Out of all of the (relatively varied) knives that I own, I only ever notice a substantial difference in the edge retention/ ease of sharpening / edge strength in the crappiest knives that I own. Aside from rust resistance, VG-10, 1095, 154CM, 440a/c/hc have all been reasonably adequate for almost any use.

Or is this simply a case of people trying to be superior to each other as usual?
>>
>>28890281

It's all in your sharpening style, and where you draw the line at being "sharp". My S90V blades take hours to sharpen with diamond stones. Some people are fine putting a 50º bevel on 440C using a 200 grit stone and having it sharp enough to cut paper, some want a fully-apexed mirror and don't want to have to touch it for a while.
>>
>>28888073
This.
Once you get your first nice knife you will not want more. Kinda like guns..

If you don't mind feeling dirty and want to try before you buy, you can get a Ganzo 7392 and see if you like the basic setup. I have a mini-grip and I love it for EDC and carry it on/off equally with my delica 4.

>>28887568
$80 is not very much to spend on a decent knife. I spent $140 on my custom grip and I really dig it. That said, I like the Spyderco Endura better. It's less expensive, as well.

+1 on Ganzo's. Got my g704 in the mail the other day and i cant believe the quality you get for $15 shipped. The g10 is grippy as fuck, everything feels extremely solid, 440c steel is acceptable. It feels better than my Ontario rat 1. Only issue is the axis lock springs are very strong so its hard to operate the lock with just your thumb, you need your thumb on one side and finger on the other to pull it down easily
>>
>>28891696

I just bought this ganzo http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0146U9Q36?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

and for whatever reason it gave me a 13.50 promo discount, so I got the knife for $1.45.

not in the same league. Comparing 8cr13mov to CTS BD1 just doesn't compute.

If you want small, i'd suggest the dragonfly (cheap), or techno (expensive) - bear in mind, though, that the techno has a thick (3/16) blade. Doesn't matter much for cutting, but it does affect slicing through rigid or brittle materials.
