Hey /k/ i unearthed a tattered vanilla envelope today with a bunch of pictures issued to my grandfather when he was in WW2. He was an anti aircraft gunner, where abouts i do not know, and these were the planes he was instructed not to shoot down. I thought they were pretty cool so i scanned them so i could share them with you.

Nice. I had not heard of this bomber before.
>>28862776
Cool shit op. Got any scans of the backsides/text?
>>28862805
its making me wait a whole minute between posts, so the dump progression is gonna be slow. feel free to post whatever in the mean time. ive got 31 of these in total.
>>28862822
they didnt have anything on the backsides unfortunately. i do have a bunch of armored vehicle flashcards from when my father was in the anti tank infantry but i havent sorted and seperated them yet.

Cool, that's one of the early Corsair prototypes, before they lengthened the nose.
>>28863249
>>28863260
did you have experiance with the corsairs or are you just really into planes?
>>28863292

nobody said yes or no but im gonna post em anyway. ill post em again in a few days/weeks after i get them all cut up and sorted.
>>28863292
I only know bits and pieces. The Helldiver in >>28863085 is a prototype as well.

thats awesome, i had no idea. my warplane knowledge is limited to what ive learned playing warthunder.

So I saw this plane the other day at a museum, and I never really realized how fucking huge it is.
Its literally as big as a 2 story house.
>>28863376
>>28863385
i havent really been up close to a plane since i was very young but ive always been astonished at how much bigger they look in person.

The Coronado, as I recall, had a nasty habit of exploding without much notice. Something to do with the fuel systems I think.

i dont do this sort of thing often so i dont know if this is normal. theyre making me do 3 captchas per post now. is that normal?

>we share a dream anon
Too bad there's so few of them left, much less flyable ones...
>>28863477
LOL as soon as i posted that shit i was like huh is this how its said? oh well
Thanks for the posts anon. Great stuff.
>>28863483
im sure there are more current flying boats that could be used for this. they just wont be nearly as cool.
>>28863500
im glad everyone is enjoying them. i cant imagine being my grandfather and having to memorize all these planes.
>>28863532
welp thats all i got for now. as i said itll take a lot of cutting and pasting and renaming but ill get these armored vehicle recognition flash cards sorted and post another thread for them. someday.
>>28863547
also let it be known my father wasnt cheating on his flashcards, i wrote the names in there so i can cut and paste the backs of the cards underneath the fronts of the cards more easily.
>>28863515
Most of them are much much smaller too. I can't think of any modern big flying boats like the Catalina or Spruce Goose.
>>28862805
>Looks like a nicer lodestar
how did I not know this existed?
>>28863532
I do it now as an intel analyst, we call it VISRECCE. It's not as bad as you think, there's lots of little tricks that can help you remember planes.
>of course I grew up with my nose in those Salamander books of combat aircraft so practically second nature to me barring Flanker differentiation

A guy I know is restoring a Lockheed Constellation, and he bought all of Canada's Martin Mars electric curtiss propeller spares.
So I guess Canada plans on grounding the Mars.

I just ran into a catalina last weekend.
It's a project in a hangar at Ft. Pierce, FL. All the parts are there plus spares. Just needs a restoration.
There were also two HU-16s parked outside.
>>28864851
Used to be not one, but two Catalinas at one museum near me (MN). Blue and Red. Then the dumbasses didn't properly secure one in a storm, it flipped, and now they have one Catalina and one repair/restoration project.
Awesome thread. Thanks for the OC anon
>>28864980
The same thing also happened in South Texas. Catalina destroyed by a storm. Those fucking retards.
The C-47 I work on got caught up in a tornado a number of years ago. There were 3 convairs and 2 c-47s spun around together.
A convair wing had gone through the fuselage. The empennage section was totally destroyed. And one prop was all bent up. We thought the plane was totaled. But, after a year or so. We got the plane all fixed up. And the repairs aren't noticeable at all.

I still have four sets of those cards.
I have a couple of the aircraft card sets too.
In regards to the vehicle ID cards, we had to carry a set everywhere we went. Whenever there was down time we were expected to pull out the cards and test each other. Those are the correct year for me too, I enlisted in 1986. I served on M113, M901 ITV, M3 CFV, and M551 Sheridan.
Some sets were actually marked as playing cards. I think the aircraft set was marked as cards. I'll have to dig them out and look, they've been packed away a couple of decades.
>>28863483
Kermit Weeks has one pretty intact sitting on the ramp at his museum as well. They're around.
Problem is that they're fuckhuge, thirsty, and painfully slow. Couple that with not one but two radials that can only be worked on by a dying breed of mechanic and you've got a perfect recipe for an airframe well on it's way out.
Oh well, at least they'll never be uncool.
>>28862776
these are really cool OP, thanks for posting them,
