I'll answer your question OP.
Snipers in the conventional sense (non-SOF units) are soldiers who make up half of a sniper and reconnaissance platoon. They do not belong to "line" companies and instead are tasked out to fulfill the battalions needs. The life and job description of snipers changes as much as it does for regular infantrymen based on what the battlespace and enemy movements dictate. As one anon said previously, snipers are infantrymen and there is no MOS in either the USMC or US Army for them. They are infantrymen first and foremost and can fulfill that role just like anyone else.
That being said, for the most part they will work as overwatch for line company operations, assist the recon section in observation, or set up SKTs (small kill teams) in areas with known enemy activity. Almost all snipers will not hold that title for long enough to avoid line infantry assignment. Like being a SAW gunner, snipers are just soldiers who were selected or passed some kind of test to get into their section.

The Marines do have an MOS identifier for Scout Sniper. What I was trying to explain is that the job is not separate from infantry jobs. The 03 stem of MOSs in the Marine corps covers all infantry jobs and the second portion of it works more like an identifier. In the Army the number/lettter identifier that comes after the MOS (for example 11B1P) designates special assignments. More than anything I was trying to dispel the myth that snipers are an entirely different job that you can enlist into.
