Hey /k/, I'm looking into slowly but surely building an AR, figuring rather than rushing to get as much parts as possible right now I'd take my time over months to acquire the exact kind of parts I want.

My question is what companies make decent A1 uppers? As well as the general price for said uppers.

A) Buy one from NDS and get ready for a 6-8 month wait.
B) Buy a parts kit
C) GunBroker

Welp, that's new. Yeah, go for it.
>>
>>28681368
yep, debuted at SHOT show. Finally made me get off my ass and start my A1 build.
>>
>>28681368
Unfortunately I'll probably have to wait a month or two before I get the cash, hopefully they don't sell out before then.
>>
>>28681091
Wrong.

Brownells now makes A1 uppers, lowers, and barrels. It was announced at SHOT show.

They use the same forgings as NDS.
>>
>>28681528
Ah, looks like you already found out.

>>28681368
>>28681298

I plan on getting one of their barrels to complete my A1 AR.

So will an A1 upper fit on just about any lower or do you absolutely need an A1 lower to go with it?

I'm a lot more interested in the fixed carrying handle than anything else and wouldn't mind too horribly if it's not a perfect reproduction in the event that I can't get an A1 lower (of course I'll try but just if it's not possible)
>>
>>28682239

You're underestimating just how many of these things were made.

It will fit on an a2 lower no problem.

The only difference will be the color, a couple of minor areas where they added structural reinforcement, such as around the buffer tube and by the pivot pin, and possibly the fence around the mag release..
>>
>>28682867
But aren't A1 style rifles kind of a niche thing? Hench they don't make a lot of them?

Does that mean they'll still be available in March?

I bought a Colt 604 upper over the weekend and just ordered a McKay lower today. Really looking forward to completing a USAF M16 (Late 604) reproduction.

so for A1 builds, do you need to but unique, straight 5.56 magazines? usually I see them with straight ones as opposed to the typical curvy ones
>>
>>28684216
You mean, a 20 round mag as opposed to a 30?
>>
>>28684216
20 round and 30 round magazines have absolutely no difference outside of length, most A1 clones just use 20 rounds because it looks right.

Keep an eye on whatacountry.com as they often have complete surplus kits - everything but the barrel, lower, and some little pins that you can get for a dollar anywhere. It's where I got my stuff.
Some people might criticise using an A2 lower but the differences are minor enough that it really doesn't matter - it's not going to be an exact replica without an auto sear anyway.
