Anyone have any informed opinions about the RAS47? LGS has a rack of them and I'm thinking about getting one to get into the AK game. Thoughts?

Get a WASR instead. The RAS47 might be a good rifle down the line but the current production have far too many issues and questionable design choices to recommend.

While you're at it, replace the bolt, the gas tube, and the shit cast trunnions.
Of you could get a WASR, and not have your parts mushroom/crack/peen.
I have one with 500+ rounds through it and no problems so far. It hasn't been under very stressful circumstances, but it performs how I expect. Take that as you will.

RAS47 has been suffering from serious quality control issues from improper heat treatment, mushrooming bolt carriers, mushrooming bolts, pot metal parts breaking or sheering off, premature wear on the parts... plus they use cast trunnions instead of milled trunnions..
So no, not reccomended at all
Just get an arsenal... or a saiga if you want to spend less... even a wasr would be better than the ras47.

Yugos are generally very solid and good milsurp rifles. Personally I don't like the way they look with that funky hand guard, and there is a limit to the amount of aftermarket parts but overall a decent purchase if you're not looking to tacticool it

You're supposed to be doing pushups off the magazine and slamming the stock into kebabs faces.
Plus Romy G dong handguards cost literally $25 for an entire stock set.
I'm 800 rounds in on my RAS 47 without any issues at all.
All the poor heat treating issues were early on, and was not only addressed by the company, but resolved, and people who purchased the shitty ones get free replacements.
Century Arms has a bad name because of all their shitty imports. They could make the single greatest weapon of all time, and /k/ would hate it and talk about how trash it is for the name alone.
No, they aren't the best AK's. But they are among the cheapest, so what do you expect?
Considering CA replaces faulty parts for free (which if you look at pages like the RAS 47 facebook page, you can see isn't any more common than any other firearm) I don't see why everyone screams so loudly about them when they do happen.
The only difference you're going to see buying this over a WASR or related is /k/ will freak out that you like things they don't like. And a WASR is fine too, I'm not bashing it, my WASR is about 1200 rounds in, and all I had to do to it was sand it a bit to smooth out the action.
And about the cast parts kicking and screaming, tell that to Ruger.

You can break any firearm by being stupid. AKs aren't impervious to damage, they do however handle it better than most firearms.
I have done pushups off my WASR more times than I can count and I still haven't fucked that gun up.
