Where did this meme of France being cowards come from? People seem to be forgetting that France has the most powerful military in Europe and has been active all over the world in recent years.

Every time I hear one of my fellow countrymen say some shit like "hurr durr cowards lol" and stuff like that I just cringe at the ignorance. It's as painful as hearing someone unironically say "back to back world war champs" which is literally the most ignorant thing ever.

This old meme called "history."

You might not have heard of it, it was probably before your time.

Well, mostly because france surrenderd to Germany two times despite having """the most powerful military in Europe"""

There's a difference between being beaten and unilaterally getting you ass kicked so badly that one wad an unconditional surrender and the other had the condition that they get to parade through your capital to celebrate.
>>
>>28667801
They essentially lay down as Nazi Germany invaded them. Their PM Reynaud was the one who wanted to keep fighting by uniting Britain and France to keep the Nazi's out of paris, but their cabinet struck it down in favor to total surrender to the germans. Within a month french citizens were being rounded up and deported into foreign labor "concentration" camps.

This is where the whole modern meme about France being cowards came from, but before that they were infamous for being pussies with the exception of when they had strong leaders like Napoleon.

Also here is a good little satirical article about the historical reason behind the meme of the french being cowards.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/746048/posts

Pretty much throughout history, France has repeatedly chosen submission (or simply lost) to foreign powers looking to dominate them.
>>
>>28667801
>what is WWII?
>>
>>28668032
Meaningless.

The French had the means to continue the fight, I did not say they could not defend themselves.

They literally chose to submit to the Germans. They had the option and means to continue their defense, but they literally rolled over and Hitler paraded through Paris as a result. Vichy france literally WELCOMED the nazis, there is black and white historical footage of frenchmen and women clapping and hollering as nazi invaders march through their streets.

Also in 1954 the french army surrendered at dien bien phu which led to the rise of the ho chi minh.

You don't measure casualty rate by what people say about the looks of the enemy soldier. You measure it by counting KIA/WIA/MIA and taking the ratio against the sum of your forces.

>Where did this meme of France being cowards come from?
From butthurt faggots that were mad that France didnt want to invade Irak with them and spend billions upon billions on a pointless war.
From faggots that dont understand that France lost more in 4 years of fighting than the US did in an entire century, an thus explaining the fact that they might not want to fight again.
From faggots that are so shit at understand that time's politics and not understanding than an awful lot of frenchmen still wanted to fight and joined the colonies for that.
From faggots that dont understand that there were a lot of commies in France and that they followed the non-aggression pact that Germany did with the Soviet Union and thus didnt want to fight either
Americans really like to come and circlejerk about "muh frog cowards" but when you have a bit of knowledge in history you realize that it's just a huge fucking meme that retards spout while trying to sound edgy.
Fucking Petain himself wanted to fight, but after having rebuilt a fuckhueg army, he wanted to gain the most time he could, unfortunately he was then hijacked by his ministers that were nazi sympathizers.

French are arguably the most martial nation in European history.
Why do you think so many languages use ''battalion'', ''regiment'', ''division'', ''corps''?
Those are all French words.
Cowardly French meme really comes from their decision to not support Americans in Iraq and the propaganda of American media because of that.
>>28668087
>>28668121
How about you read about BoF and how it went?
No, they couldn't have continued to fight.
Most industrialized and most populous parts of France fell to Germans.
Their air force was gone.
They were left with a prospect of defending a front from Bordeaux to Swiss border with something like 60 divisions, most of them second-line.
They were defeated, and they could've done better, but it's total bullshit they didn't fight. They fought and they suffered a defeat.

Thanks to them surrendering, instead of a battleground it nearly became a pyre instead. Hitler ordered it to be torched as part of the German retreat, and only because the commander of Paris was in love with all the art and history of the city did he not do it (and made it seem like he was obeying to buy time for it to be captured intact instead).

Within recent history (WWII and after) France got their ass kicked a lot. They surrendered in WWII and Vietnam (though Vietnam is often described as a purely American war). They also aren't as strong supporters of US military operations as the UK is.

France is good but their priorities are fucked and they don't try to win wars anymore. The US is starting to go the same way, except we have a history of kicking ass so it will take a lot longer for the US to be known as "surrender monkeys".

Yes, for example, 10% of Soviet tanks were Western (not just American).
You don't know shit man, stop talking.
Americans of course were crucial in winning WW2, but you didn't win it alone, nor did you ''save'' anyone, except from communism in post-war Europe.
If Americans never landed in France, Soviets would've defeated the Germans nonetheless.

Extremely questionable. There is a good chance that if the US didn't get involved Germany wouldn't have wasted resources to defend against us (wasting money on stuff like the Tiger and other stuff). Which would mean they would be more likely keep Russia at bay. I'm not saying that Germany would defeat Russia, simply keep them at arms length and most likely establish a truce of some sort (think the armistice the US has with N. Korea).

Probably because at one point a Polish Battalion in 1940 had to defend the retreat of a French Army from an advancing German Brigade.

The Poles held out almost as long against a more numerous enemy, while being attacked by the Soviets on their Eastern Front, while might I add, waiting for the French and British to attack Germany.

The 2nd World War would have been a footnote of history had the French honored their fucking treaty with Poland and invaded on 3 September 1939.

It would have remained a footnote had they actually fought with some fucking backbone in generalship and maybe realized that tanks and cars could drive right through the forests they thought were impenetrable.

Even then, the frog bastards STILL wanted to be the first into Germany, the Eagle's Nest, Paris, etc.

Remember, fucking Poland was the 4th largest contributor to the Allied effort during WWII in supplies, manpower, etc, despite being occupied from day 1.

>>28669043
Honey, do you understand how governments work

The government in 39 was in no way similar as the one we had in 42
Petain had been given the full powers and thus formed his own government.
The ministers we had in 39 were in most part socialists, so they wanted to avoid a war at all costs, thats why they didnt want to invade germany (which we could have easily done) and maybe get a truce or something.

What happened to Poland is sad and shameful, but thaaaat's politics, a lot of french people hate when our politicians turn their back on other nations we have a deal with.
For example the deal we had with Russia about boats was cancelled and a lot of french people were angry about that

Except he's right. Both UK and France are second strike level nuclear powers, they aren't even a small candle to the US. Both of them rest at just the amount to get MAD, and thats the real goal.

If France has a small amount more, it's hardly going to mean the entire country is magically better at every operation ever and that one small point completely defeats the mountain of evidence that is saying otherwise when anyone takes a look at the exact capabilities of each nation.

The French being cowards came from 2004. Bush wanted a war with Iraq, Britain is our little cuck so they were on board, France was one of the most outspoken opponents to our invasion of Iraq, they are also a permenant member of the Security Council in the UN and blocked the USA from doing things to make the invasion "legal".

Cue the most powerful nation the world has ever known throwing a little hissy fit. Our Congress started serving "freedom fries" because the French were cowardly traitors. The meme of France being weak, lazy cowards was born.

That is totally ignoring the fact that without France the USA would have lost its Revolution. But fuck that! They didn't want to go to war with a nation that didn't deserve it, they are cowards.

It started in WW1 when the french military refused to participate in offensive campaigns after the disaster of the First Battle of Champagne. This obviously earned them a very negative reputation since it meant the Commonwealth (and later American) forces had to do all the hard work despite it not even being their country.

Then there was the whole quick defeat during WW2 which plenty of other have gone in.

Then there was the failures at Dien Bien Phu and the loss of Algiers (a full fledged French state).

Then there was Frances withdrawal from NATO, which was big FUCK YOU to the allied forces which liberated them during WW2.

In more modern times there was the refusal to allow US aircraft to use French air space to bomb Libya in their punitive strike for the Lockerbie bombing. After this there was the refusal to get involved with the Iraq war. A lot of Bongs also have not forgotten how the French sold exocet missiles to the Argentinians.

So maybe cowards isn't the right word per say, but worthless bastards certainly is.

It would have been nice if that had meant the end of offensive operations since they were useless and a manpower sink thanks to the technology and doctrine of the times. Sadly that was not the case.

>Then there was the whole quick defeat during WW2 which plenty of other have gone in.
People tend to forget that England also got BTFO in the BoF, funny that.

>Then there was the failures at Dien Bien Phu and the loss of Algiers (a full fledged French state).
Algeria was an enormous clusterfuck, I'll grant you that. The FLN was broken militiraly but the political class couldn't be bothered anymore because the war had become immensely impopular. In effect France lost the Algerian War the same way the US "won" the Vietnam War.
Dien Bien Phu was a proper fuck up by the high command but the soldiers on the ground fought like lions.

>Then there was Frances withdrawal from NATO, which was big FUCK YOU to the allied forces which liberated them during WW2.
France never left NATO, only the unified command.

>In more modern times there was the refusal to allow US aircraft to use French air space to bomb Libya in their punitive strike for the Lockerbie bombing. France "secretly" gave classified informations on the Excocet to England FFS.
Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, it was a mistake and France was right then in case you still haven't realised it.

>It started in WW1 when the french military refused to participate in offensive campaigns after the disaster of the First Battle of Champagne

Don't you mean the Nivelle offensive instead?
France launched several attacks in 1915, during/after the 1st Champagne (Hartmannswillerkopf, 1st Artois, Linge, 2nd Champagne).

The Nivelle offensive however led to protests from the soldiers, solved by Petain by adopting a more thoughtful strategy, avoiding hazardous massive attacks and instead preferring reasonably scaled assaults on better identified objectives. As well as better living conditions in the trenches, more leave...

And the last actions of the French army in 1917 were offensives, at La Malmaison and Verdun, which showed clear improvements in the use of tanks (slaughtered few months earlier at Berry-au-Bac) and artillery. Both were successes.

>and the loss of Algiers (a full fledged French state).

Algeria (which was a French departement (itself divided in departements) and not a state), Algiers being the capital.
By the way, for the curious, I encourage them to read about the Algerian War, it's a perfect example of successful counter-insurgency and complete political failure.

>Then there was Frances withdrawal from NATO, which was big FUCK YOU to the allied forces which liberated them during WW2.

France left NATO integrated command, not NATO proper.
And IIRC there were plans for the country to reintegrate it in case of Soviet invasion.

De Gaulle could have avoided the others dick moves though.

>A lot of Bongs also have not forgotten how the French sold exocet missiles to the Argentinians.

These missiles were sold before the Falklands War (order in 1979) and France later gave full support to the UK.
To quote Sir John Nott, Secretary of State for Defence during the war:
>"in so many ways Mitterrand and the French were our greatest allies"
>>
>>28677314
How? By moving on Germany when the Rhineland was remilitarized? They refused to go at it alone on grounds of being thought as aggressive warmongers and the UK refused to support them at the time.
By attacking when Germany was busy with Poland? The army and its doctrine were geared towards a purely defensive warfare thanks to the traumatism of having WW1 fought on their soil, the UK was also quite happy with that.
Enforcing Versailles would have been enough but no one else was interested in that and the US were in fact working against it.
Why does France deserve a special responsability for not stopping Germany?
>>
>>28677335

The frogs pulled out of NATO because they wanted a separate peace if push came to shove. That's undermining the whole point of collective defense, and a pretty pussy move.

If tanks started rolling across the Fulda gap or North German Plains, the French would not be there, and would continue to not be there for the crucial first week. If things got really bad NATO wouldn't have much operational depth because France removed all their bases and supplies.

Yeah but they didn't have demographic advantages on the scale that the Soviets enjoyed. The Soviets also had an insane amount of land and, after a large scale relocation of industry, insane strategic depth. I hate to use the russian winter meme but that was also very helpful in bogging down the German offensive. The French had none of this.Yeah they had demographic advantages but not the strategic depth to survive a few months of German maneuver warfare and still have the ability to fight. Yes they could have done better (Think Charles De Gaulle and some sort of spoiling attack on Germans emerging from the Ardennes) but after those first few days/weeks there really was next to nothing they could do against a large, well trained, mobile force like that of the Wehrmacht.

This.

I'm only 25 and I can remember hearing the Le French Surrender meme in the mid-90's. It's a meme because France surrendered in WW2. They surrendered, because they experienced catastrophic defeat at the Germans.

Since then, the French populace has been reluctant participants in conflict. Even in Gulf War 1.0 France, while a part of the coalition, had a populace critical of military action. In short, they basically believed the action to be too imperialistic.

Of course this does not sit well with American citizens. They don't like disloyalty as much as they don't like being called imperialistic.

>the French populace has been reluctant participants in conflict.

But is that really true? The French have fought many low-level wars in Africa since WW2. In fact, they're still fighting there today. Sometimes it's to preserve various mining claims or agricultural projects, or to support various leaders in their sphere. They got involved in Shaba II to support their clients, for example, and almost got into a firefight with Belgian forces during the Battle of Kolwezi.

While they mostly used FFL troops, they also used some regular French forces.

I believe you are correct. If you do some googling you'll find there is absolutely dissent pertaining to the most recent Mali intervention.

Still, not nearly as much dissent as either of the US led Gulf Wars.

Which probably says more about the political perception of French citizens than it does about the conflicts themselves. Perhaps French feel obligation to help in Africa as they have had a hand in creating its problems.

Maybe the French just don't feel like supporting American interventions. Maybe French don't like the non-critical way Americans support their governments interventions.

I don't really know much about French support or dissent for African interventions. I do know that the French public is often at odd with the way Americans support their governments military actions. They don't like being dragged along.

Maybe you just pointed out good evidence for their hypocrisy.

- Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power.

- War of the Spanish Succession
- Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved every since.

- American Revolution
- In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare; "France only wins when America does most of the fighting."

- French Revolution
- Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.

- The Napoleonic Wars
- Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.

- The Franco-Prussian War
- Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.
>>
- World War I
- Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States [Entering the war late -ed.]. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.

- World War II
- Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.

- War in Indochina
- Lost. French forces plead sickness; take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu

- Algerian Rebellion
- Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.

- War on Terrorism
- France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald's.
