Mystery Ranch is a quality brand. I got a bag of their's on deployment and still hike with it.

Not sure if the huge bag you're looking at is the right way to go. Depends how much stuff you're going to shove into it, but I found my smaller MR Expedition more than sufficient to live out of on deployment and use for a hiking pack. It can hold a lot and close to the body in a vertical position. I'm old now and don't play the "who can pack the most weight" game young guys do. I too out at no more than 60lbs of pack weight anymore, and the Expedition packs are more than enough to carry that much without being as huge as the pictured pack.

you would honestly pay 600 bux for some off brand pos back when you could easily get a bigger much better bag for way less.. I have one of these its sturdy as shit and frikken massive.
>>
>>28603724
>bigger

>sturdier
Hahahhahaa, oh god haha. Thanks anon. I needed that laugh. I used one of those pieces of shit in Ranger School and they're terrible. We regularly broke the plastic frames, the fit was fucking awful, and even unloaded the bag was heavy.

I'd take a civilian backpacking bag over that any day, and I know for a fact mystery ranch is better.
>>
>>28603287
>It's only 600D.
I've been looking at getting one. The way I figure it, it's $40ish. I get one use it and give it a lot of abuse, if it holds up, awesome I have a new go bag, if not I'm not out a shit ton of money.
>>
>>28603133

Hmm, maybe, but not at that price. Probably not even half the price would I buy it.
>>
>>28603724
Mystery Ranch is not "off brand", they are very well made. The USGI packs are honestly pretty shit and their external frames are overbuilt, strangely shaped, and not as durable as you would expect.

Those packs are really only good as short haul to pack up all your stuff to and from a flightline. The smaller Mystery Ranch internal frame packs are better for mission packs, and the Eberlestock packs are better when you really do need a giant fuckhuge pack for some reason. External frame is a shit, especially when the bag is so fat rather than vertical.
>>
>>28603133
If you have money like that to piss away on WAY overpriced gear. Knock yourself out!
>>

Honestly if you don't mind the money go ahead, but for the same cash you could probably order custom made shit from smaller brands.

I've been using a Mountain Ruck on one of the MR airborne NICE frames for years. Never had a problem. I've hauled everything from mortars to radios to a weeks worth of kit. The internal compression is one of my favorite features.

>$650?
>buy once, never worry about it breaking

>pic related, mine when I got it
>>
To all the people bitching about price, eh, hiking packs are expensive. An Osprey pack half the size costs $300, and it doesn't have even the kind of padding and edge stitching.

Really, it depends how much use you get out of it. $600 is a lavish overexpense for a bag that sits in a closet, but it's not bad for a bag that actually gets a lot of use.

I surely couldn't drop money like that frequently. Family life comes first and the pension the army pays to disabled soldiers is shit. I just have zero reason to drop 650 on a pack that I could get a 250 bag to do just as well. Understand that I am sure the stuff MR moves is high quality but either the mark up or the business model is shit for them to have those price points. They are geared to a market that gets lots of govt funding also. Think of it like getting a "normal" car that is reliable and sturdy, or getting a "super car" that cost as much as many homes. Heh, or like having one F-22, or 100 conventional aircraft.
>>
>>28604076
>pension the army pays to disabled soldiers is shit.
Well if you aren't at 100% it's supposed to be compensation not a wage to live on bro.
>>
>>28604076
>I have zero reason to pay so much for a high quality bag
>Therefore it is overpriced

This bag is meant for people who routinely beat the hell out of bags and use them a lot. It's not meant for people who go on half mile walks or use it for range days.

Don't apply your personal situation and think everybody else is the same. For people who use or travel with these bags, it's a not unreasonable price.

I'd get the 7500 over the mountain pack.

I guess I should say, hey guys look a company that marks their stuff way way up so they can make a fortune from the war industry, PMCs, and PMC wannabes. What the market bears and all that. I have a problem with anyone that makes something out of conventional quality materials then sells it like it was made from gold. Yes the stuff has a great warranty and is pretty much bomb proof. There are loads of people that still swear by the old ALICE gear, or the army issued rucks, or the bags some small business makes just for regular folks. There isn't really a way to say one way or another what is "the best" but one can call out that the markup is very high.

Just get a Savotta LJK for half of that price, if you don't need a big ruck. 78 liters is only medium size. The price is not the issue but an external frame is a must in my opinion and I have positive experiences with that Savotta ruck.

There are better packs for a much cheaper price, in my opinion.

If you can find surplus Swiss alpines packs, they're worth it, however, they've gone up in price.

That said, I think I'd rather buy pic related pac or, if I needed more space, I would pick up a black 100 liter pack.

I don't think I could ever justify spending more than 300 on a pack, but it's your money.

I'm gonna be in a 25lb pack laughing as you big bag guys get picked off one by one. I'll be bounding lightly over the corpses and sprinting at full speed through alleyways while you INCH baggers are trying to have it all.

Build a cache, pack a 3-day bag, and you'll never get stuck lugging 85lbs innawoods.
>>
While I wouldn't drop $650 for a pack I will forever be a shill for their Hot Top firepack. The thing is fucking amazeballs for weight distribution making 45 lbs of gear feel like 20 and is worth every penny for making hiking and working on fires less fatiguing.

>Literally a glorified ALICE Pack for $650

You can buy a large good condition ALICE and Frame for like $70 on amazon, but you can get em way cheaper at surp stores or garage sales if you can find them

http://www.amazon.com/Military-Large-Olive-Straps-COMPLETE/dp/B005BTVG94

and some improved MOLLE II straps for around $15

http://www.amazon.com/Enhanced-Shoulder-Straps-Desert-Surplus/dp/B00CHSR1C8/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1453322733&sr=1-5&keywords=molle+straps

The fastex clips and MOLLE webbing can easily be added to the pack if you are any good at alterations (even if you aren't, it's not difficult to follow a tutorial).

Then that leaves you with a Ruck that's practically identical to this one (minus zippers) for about 1/5 the cost

No anon it's not. But I would agree that $650 is about 400 too much for the product offered.
>>
>>28616352
I don't know what you've heard. It's not comfortable per se but the idea is that it feels the same no matter how much load you're carrying. In my experience, internal frames feel good up to about 10-15 kg and after that the comfort level gets lower rapidly. LJK feels just ok at 10 kg, it's ok at 20 kg, 30 kg, 40 kg...

And the reputation it has is well deserved. It has been issued to Finnish special forces, rangers and recon for three decades and it has endured the abuse well.

You should consider it. It is one of the best rucks in the world, although not very well known outside Finland. There are three variants: the original LJK, LJK Modular and Jääkäri. Also, Varusteleka is currently testing a prototype of a new ruck with the same frame. I carried the original during my conscript service at Border Guard and will definitely buy one of the variants as soon as I stop being a poor student.
>>
>>28614114
did that too, just the chick was way cuter
>>
>>28620408
I prefer external frame rucks, there's just more attachment options (usually anyways).
