Question,
>Why are POGs so fucking arrogant?

I have a former air force 'Food service specialist' coworker who only owns a .22lr pistol telling me with "A week of practice" on his weekends he would mop the floor with me at the local steel challenge match.

Low-bar squats are pretty good for your lower back as long as you have really strict form but squats/deadlift only work your abs in a stabilizing role. Any core work is going to better for your core than squats, or else people would be doing squats as core work.

you clearly arent SF and most likely havent even seen an active duty member of the military. please stop talking.

why do you give a fuck if someone goes NG SF?

if anything, it's a better training experience because you dont get stuck in TRADOC waiting around for courses to start. NG has first dibs on slots since their unit is the one shelling out the money

also you can get pretty much any ancillary school you want once you get your green beret

go fuck yourself mate. stop talking about things you know nothing about

>>
>>28577670
Are you for fucking real? "Better training experience"? The whole thing in SF is to get better skills, it's either being downrange or learning new skills as you age and don't become a liability toward your team.

Do the NG get first slots? Yea the NG unit does get the first slot but for like 1 or 2 people. And who's to say you are gonna get guaranteed the slot if another guy beats your merit score or is buddy buddy with somebody high in command.
>>
ITT: People who will never go SF debate the merits of whether to go NG or Active SF.

National Guard groups get activated or put on training orders all the time, so it isn't as different as you might think.
>>
>>28577735
If you're not dedicated enough to go Active you're not SF material. NG is half assing it. It's not about the training it's about the kind of person that goes "I want to join an elite unit, but only if I don't have to move"
>>
>>28577774

The fact that NG SF groups exist, opr8 beside their active duty counterparts, and accept new accessions (as opposed to only former active guys) makes your point entirely bullshit.

Because war is the ultimate test of masculinity. We've been at war for nearly 15 years so there are now lots and lots of guys around who have passed that test. (Compare to the 80's and 90's where going into the military meant you didn't do shit and were probably too dumb for work in the real world)

>Like if I go be an architect, no matter how successful I am, my girl's still gonna wish she was hot enough to nab an operator.

please stop.

> And who's to say you are gonna get guaranteed the slot if another guy beats your merit score or is buddy buddy with somebody high in command.

the fuck are you talking about. when a NG or RA soldier goes on orders no one is going to take their slot.

please show me more about your knowledge of TRADOC senpai. i'd love to hear it.
>>
>>28577825
Yes I've never Tradoc, heck the first time I've heard of them was when I went to South Carolina as part of the first phase of OCS.

I don't know where you live but slots are completely depend on merit scores in the NG and AR. And even then your merit scores will not guarantee you training at all for example the captain and a sergeant of my unit had got the highest merit scores for air assault school and yet couldn't go because the commander of the BN decided it would be seen as "ethically bad" sending both a SGT and a CPT to training so he sent a SPC and a PFC.

Those are good jobs. They don't translate 1:1, of course, because no one in the civilian world drives tanks or Apaches, but it looks good on a resume when you apply to become a mechanic at, say, a car dealership. (They train you to work on their particular make of cars anyway.)

>Girls are attracted to exactly one thing, military-wise: Marine Corps dress blues.

This is the fucking truth.

A couple of times now I've been to Marine Corps Birthday Balls in these big-ass function centers and there'll be a wedding reception or something next door. It's like shooting fish in a bucket. (The groomsmen probably cursed us under their breath, but that's the price we pay for having Jody fuck our wives/girlfriends.)

Point is, no girl ever asks what it is that you do in the Marines. They don't fucking know or even really care. They'll ask if we've been to Iraq or Afghanistan, but that's about it.
>>
>>28578002
>What branch would you think id enjoy more?
>quality of people and equipment, not necessarily quality of life.

Air Force. A plane is cleaner than a tank and is generally more interesting to work on.

Plus, the Air Force has a unique relationship between their officers and enlisted because, unlike the other branches, it's primarily the officers that go to war in the high-danger jobs. A plane gets shot down, an officer dies, not the dozens of enlisted personnel that service the plane.

They are generally more respectful of each other.

>What's the process for transferring MOS's?

There are a few ways to reclass. Most commonly are through reclass INOUT calls. The Army (or all the other services for that matter) publishes a list of MOS's that are understaffed and offer a bonus to anyone who wants to get into them. You still have to get permission to reclass, of course because your current unit might also be understaffed.

If you're, say, a mechanic and you want to transfer to infantry, that's a LOT harder. The Army places more value on a skilled soldier versus a dumbass bullet sponge. They've spent a lot of money training you to do a valuable job. They can get a whole slew of dumbass 18 year olds to scream HOOAH any time they like.

How about the other way around then?

reclassing from infantry to Mechanic?
>>
>>28578124
That's much easier, since you're going from something useless to useful. However, there may be certain MOS that you would now closed from due to your rank.

Infantry is not as fun as you think. We won't be going to war for another ten years or so, until the majority of voting public forgets how tired everyone was after the last decade and a half of war.

Being Infantry during peacetime is being treated like you're a cross between a prisoner and a special needs child.
>I want to go infantry because I want a gun.
Ah, that's adorable. No, sweetie, you don't get a gun. What could you possibly want to shoot at? But I've got something that's just as good? Close your eyes...it's a BROOM! Go sweep the parade ground. If you do well, I'll let you march around the hills for hours and hours.

But when i said before
>Im interested in being a mechanic but if things kick off in a spectacular fashion, im young, dumb, and want a gun.
i meant if there is a big one, id like to serve in combat because im a dipshit and feel thats the best i can support my countries ideals, even though remaining a skilled mechanic would probably be more useful to the Military than another cumforbrains retard with a AR.

ah well, Mechanic might be something to be interested in.

the PSYOPS talk earlier had me interested in that sort of stuff, but then i remembered im not a fan of desk jobs.
>>
>>28578207
As a mechanic on air craft you can get you flight status and you can become a flight engineer or crew chief. That is a cool job.

On Blackhawks, for example, you start as a 15T, fixing the helicopter. Then you get aboard the helicopter and you get on the door guns.

If there is a war, you're more likely to see action that way than as a grunt who, more likely than not, will end up patrolling a patch of sand that has never seen any human presence before you, let alone the enemy.

Is there a minimum level of fitness including swimming.

I'm looking to train to an acceptable level
>>
>>28578650
The physical fitness standards are well-known and are published everywhere.

As a young male, getting in shape is actually quite easy. Stop eating like a pig and work out. It doesn't even have to be anything with a program. Do push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups etc. and go running.
>>
>>28578650
Shit you know I'm not awake.. Starting from the top

>>
>>28578650
You should be shooting for more than the minimum, pal.
>>
>>28578746
he didn't say "minimum", he said "acceptable". Acceptable in the Navy, realistically, is considerably above minimum physical standards.
>>
>>28578784
Should be shooting for more than acceptable then. Same shit.
>>
>>28579132
Don't get hung up on the meaning of a word, autist. He wants to train. He's probably just asking how far off he is before going to the recruiter.

>>28578650
Go to the recruiter. He will tell you how fit you are or what you have to do. Hell, he'll probably go working out with you.
>>
>>28576686
Like I said, apparently it's tuned for fatbodies. And honestly, I would just run intervals instead of doing this, personally. However, if you're not doing anything else this looks okay. Doing HIIT in the form of burpees/bodyweight squats/etc. like this program does gives you some localized benefits as well as the cardio benefits.
>>
>>28577774
NG units see deployment and combat at a similar rate to active units. What most people don't realize is that a significant portion of the military's combat arms strength is in the NG, which is most combat arms MOS and closely related one, which was intended to make sure we couldn't go to war effectively without the state's approval, but doesn't really matter in effect. The reserves are mostly support MOS, and do a lot of supply chain and related things. Both also have full-time positions. NG SF pass the exact same training.
>>
>>28577895
If you enjoyed rebuilding your car, a mechanic MOS might be good.

like >>28577962 and>>28578028 said, you have a great resume if you want to be a car mechanic, and if you're an aircraft mechanic you could potentially segue into a sweet job at an aerospace company, ESPECIALLY if you use your GI Bill and get a degree in something like mechanical or aerospace engineering.
>>
>>28578176
I've never understood why people on /k/ want to go infantry to play with guns. We're on fucking /k/, just go to the range if you want to play with guns. Don't spend 4 years in a shitty job so that you can spend an hour or two per week practicing with a rifle you aren't allowed to own.
>>
>>28579192
Even for the Corps you can go to the recruiter as a fatbody. They'll help build you up.

And calling others autists when you sperg out about the difference between minimum and acceptable is pretty funny.
>>
>>28578650
This is what I'm here for, son. Give me your age, weight, height, and as much as you can about your fitness (number of pushups you can do, number of situps, number of pullups, mile time, used to play sports, whatever, etc.) and an HONEST idea of your diet. I can give you some advice and maybe a rough timescale to reach your goal.

>>
I'm going 12B and was curious of my chances of being deployed to the middle east since combat engineers deal with IED route reconnaissance and clearance.
>>
>>28579390
>I've never understood why people on /k/ want to go infantry to play with guns.

There are a couple of reasons for this:

1. A fundamental misunderstanding of what military personnel actually do.

2. It's a job that's very easily explained to others. Before you go in and you're thinking about your MOS, you start fantasizing about what you'll tell people when you get out with a chest full of medals. Saying, "I was a Firefinder radar operator in support of an artillery battery" doesn't sound nearly as cool as "I was a rifleman in the Corps".

3. They take the POG stuff waaaay too seriously. I see people accusing one another of being POGs and talking shit about POG MOSs more regularly on these threads than I did in 6 years in the Marines. (Full disclosure, I was a POG, an 0861. I spent plenty of time around grunts and never once was I called a POG. One time I thought I was, but I mis-heard, I was actually being called a fag. )

4. They really want to be Rangers or Special Forces, but they know that asking about that will probably get them shouted down for being deluded Cawadoody kids.

What is that supposed to mean? If it doesn't leak you're good to join or will they have to be removed in 100% of the cases before attempting to join ?
>>
>>28579768
If the cyst is not large/painful to the point where you can't wear a uniform/equipment or do a sit-up, and it's not oozing shit, then you can join.

If you've had it removed within the past 6 months you cannot join. However, if you had one removed but longer than 6 months ago, you're fine.

>>28579672
Gives you more time to heal up from surgery and get fit (and wait out possible recurrences, which would potentially suggest a more serious issue).
>>
>If the cyst is not large/painful to the point where you can't wear a uniform/equipment or do a sit-up, and it's not oozing shit, then you can join.

Aight I guess I'm good to join. 7 years ago some sort of bump developed above my butt and started bleeding/hurting. It stopped bleeding/hurting a couple months later but a smaller/harder version of the bump is still present to date.
The question is wtf will they say at MEPS about it. Will they even notice it?

Not that anon, but if you're offering I would love some advice. Going enlisted Airforce, 4B031. I can do 25 push ups before my form starts to get fucked, 35 sit ups, I don't have a pull up bar unfortunately, I could go find a straight tree branch if you need it though. Never played sports, was a total skeleton that played games in high school. Currently 170 lbs. Mile time is 7:45 (I've been a cardiobunny for a lot longer than doing any lifting or working out, about two years now). Diet probably could be better. Oatmeal for breakfast unless I'm lazy then it's Honey Nut Cheerios. Lunch is usually eggs (from own chickens) some vegetables or a salad, and then some sandwich (ppj, ham and turkey, tuna it varies). Dinner is whatever is being made, I've got a big problem with portion control, but my mom is a bit of a health nut so it's generally not bad, lots of lean meats, veggies, pasta is whole grain that sort of thing. I'm cutting out alcohol from my diet in prep for it basic.

Right now I'm using a treadmill to do C25K one day and then the 0-100 pushups and squats and 0-200 situps the next. In addition every few hours I stop what I'm doing and pump out pushups and situps, some ex-military people suggested doing that both before and during basic since I'll be waiting around a lot and it helps teach correct form.

This is all new to me. I've lurked on /fit/, but mostly cardio threads, and I leave in three months so actively putting 100% into health and fitness is all new to me. I didn't put it off, I got offered one of my dream jobs but it was a "you got 4 months to get ready and this contract will only be here for half an hour so get down here" situation.

>Is NG SF legitimate green beret?

Yes, the National Guard is part of the Department of the Army.

Yes, Army Special Forces wear a green beret.

>Can any state NG enlist under that option?

The National Guard doesn't work like that. You enlist into a specific unit, and each unit has their own recruiters. 19th and 20th SF Group units are spread out around the country and actively recruit support personnel as well as Rep63s and prior service to go to SFAS.

National Guard SF units usually have their own tryout, then you go to their version of SOPC while at drill, then you go to SOPC, then you go to SFAS, then you go to SFQC.
>>
>>28582668
what he said is right, people can and have gotten clearance with worse, the biggest thing is that
-are you working on your debt (ie you have a finance plan to pay it off)
-did you omit anything else that would be on record or would pop up from references people give
-the jail thing is mitigated since it happened eiher 5+ or 7+ years ago well what exactly was it?
-elaborate on the license

>The whole thing in SF is to get better skills, it's either being downrange or learning new skills as you age and don't become a liability toward your team.

>Do the NG get first slots?

Yep. Not just for SFAS/SFQC, but pretty much every TRADOC school.

>Yea the NG unit does get the first slot but for like 1 or 2 people. And who's to say you are gonna get guaranteed the slot if another guy beats your merit score or is buddy buddy with somebody high in command.

>What about a mechanic MOS?

Keep in mind that your very likely to not really do a whole lot depending on your specific MOS.

Like you're imagining that you'll be some cartoon character in coveralls who is like the autismo genius mechanic who can fix anything and you'll be the most popular guy in the motor pool.

More likely you'll be taught how to fix one specific piece of equipment, only to a certain level, and 90% of your time will be spent dispatching vehicle so other soldiers who aren't mechanics can do user level maintenance (PMCS) and sweeping the motor pool before final formation.

>So someone couldn't walk into a NG recruiters office for their state and say "I want to enlist under the Rep63 program" and then go into the pipeline? Isn't that how 18x works? You enlist 18x then right after AIT you start selection?

I don't think you understand what I wrote.

There is not "National Guard recruiter for your state".

When you talk to a recruiter or retention NCO you're enlisting into a specific unit.

If that unit isn't subordinate to SF Group, then you can't enlist into their version of SF Babbies.

So you've decided to enlist. You're not just going to be some REMF or POG schmuck. You're going to operate. Trying to decide which Special Operations unit you're going to join is actually a lot trickier than it sounds.

Let's go down the list from least to most respectable:

Air Force Combat Controllers and Pararescuers are eliminated right off the bat because they're fucking Chair Force. If you're in the USAF and you're not flying a fighter, you've fucked up.

Coast Guard ASTs? Are you kidding me? Coast Guard? Get the fuck out. You can be a lifeguard at the Y.

Marine Raiders are pretty cool but they're also pretty new so no one knows them and no one will care when you tell them you are one. Also, Marines are generally dumb as shit.

The Army Rangers should be near the top of anyone's list. The last famous Ranger, though, was Pat Tillman and he was shot by his own guys. Half the Army has a Ranger tab on their shoulder so no one will care if you're a real Ranger. Plus, it's impossible to tell people you were in the Army without people thinking you weren't tough enough for the Marines.

The Army Special Forces are extremely cool and everyone respects them, but as a Green Beret, you will be doing a lot of helping dirty-ass locals with their problems. Fucking waste of time. Do you want to be in the Peace Corps or do you want to operate?

The Navy SEALs are a great choice. Everyone respects the hell out of them, but "American Sniper" made them all look like a bunch of goofballs except for Chris Kyle, who was a liar. Worse, the Navy's dress uniform is as faggy as the rest of the Navy.

As you can see, there's no perfect choice, but such is life among the elite warriors of America: you have to sometimes make do with what you're given.

Best of luck!

You're sorta making me worry its going to be bad. Everyone keeps telling me its gotten softer on new recruits. What did you fuck up on a lot? PT or drill movements?

The Army respects everyone and everything equally.

Yeah but can I switch between feminine and masculine clothing?

>I barely made it through

Man that sucks.

YMMV with Jackson (when I went through all but two of our DSs were infantrymen and they fucked us up pretty good.

>>28583527
If you're a high school athlete (not a fat football lineman) you'll probably do fine.

Also everyone keeps lying to you about it being "softer".

The only time where it may have been "softer" was during the surge when they would push PT failures through to AIT because bodies were needed.
>>
>>28583527
I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm just all sorts of fucked up. I do suck at PT and hate that too. Went to another Dr last week and he said I have a stress fracture so I'm all sorts of fucked up.
>>
>>28583521

Let me guess, USF?

I'll just be over here at my ICCAE program.

It's the ID you get when you ETS.

You're not supposed to apparently, but I did.

Yeah, no you didn't.

Well I'm a 25 year old skinny NEET but I've been spending the last couple of months getting myself in shape to prepare. I'm going 12B so hopefully its not too bad or end up getting myself singled out for being older.

>>28583562
Damn hopefully you feel better man. What was the worst part?
>>
>>28583609
>I love how he hates officers but still had to salute them.

Never said I hated officers. In fact I worked with a lot of officers because MI is pretty O heavy. And most of them were great intel guys. A few were at worst just not good at their jobs, but great at other management and admin tasks and took care of soldiers.

In fact I knew more shitty SNCOs than I did Os.

>I bet that just stuck right in his craw.

No, not really. I was on a familiar basis with the officers I worked with and was trusted to do good intel work.

> >inb4 I didn't salute officers. I gave them the finger.
> Yeah, no you didn't.

Didn't say I did faggot.

I don't have a problem with Os, I have a problem with stupid Butter Bar Babbies who think they know everything.

You're just a commissioned private, don't be butt hurt about it.

Three dudes I was in BCT with were over 40.

Two were cops and one was prior service 11B.

The only way they were ever "singled out" by the killhats was that they were not treated like stupid kids all the time.

/meg/ used to be pretty good, believe it or not.

We had some trips who gave legit advice. We had some anons who came in from some interesting MOS's. Most of the prospective enlistee anons were receptive and didn't just want to know how easy RASP would be.

That was months ago. This isn't even near the worst /meg/ we've had recently.

The shouting match between two anons each claiming to be Rangers accusing the other of stolen valor was pretty fuckin' funny, though.

Low crawling, Lack of sleep, Being away from home and FTX's. All in all it sucks and no matter what people tell you AIT is not better. Its just not for me.

My original reply was to some faggot who said some shit that was wrong about TRADOC, and then said he only heard of TRADOC when he went to OCS.

A couple easy things to remember about /meg/ to make it more fun and informative:

Anything you really need to know can be found with google or a call to your recruiter

Anyone claiming to actually be in the military is lying. (Even if they claim to have proof, anything can be purchased off the internet for a couple bucks.)
>>
>>28583551
When did you go? I went 6 years so I don't know if the system change or something but I keep hearing that if you get pissy and shit you can have some type of card that makes the Drill Sergeants leave you alone. Is that true or is somebody pulling my ass?

Why would I be lying that I'm in the military if I'm saying how I'm getting chaptered. What would be the point of lying.

>When did you go?

2007

>I went 6 years so I don't know if the system change or something but I keep hearing that if you get pissy and shit you can have some type of card that makes the Drill Sergeants leave you alone.

That's one of those urban legends that retards keep pushing through the PNN (Private News Network) all the time.

Everyone has a story about how they totes heard from a friend of a friend's cousin about stress cards.

Stress cards have never been a thing, especially not in the Army.

This bullshit goes way back to the fucking 90's and people keep spreading it.

It started because someone heard about the Navy giving recruits some cards with contact info for counselors and shit, just like you get when you deploy (at least I got one).

>Is that true or is somebody pulling my ass?

Everyone is trolling everyone about this. If you ask for a source about "stress cards" being in any branch's basic they won't be able to come up with one.

And conveniently stress cards always never existed when they were in but they some how do now.

I actually don't know what I did with my copy, I probably did something retarded and gave it to the VA rep at my previous school, or it's in my garage in a box of uniforms and TA50.

Guys, I'm officially in the marine corps dep. I still have to choose my mos and my recruiter gave me time to think. Now I'm gonna be honest, my absolute number 1 objective... Marsoc
Here is the deal I was thinking of going infantry, until I got an 85 on my Asvab. The recruiter said my line scores open up for pretty much every job in the corps.
Now what I had in mind was, Intel, avionics and combat logistics. I want to spend the time working for the corps and developing a strong mentality for marsoc, while doing a job that can translate for outside LATER down the road (sort of a back up plan), thing is, I don't want a puta fucking desk job. I don't mind if I get like stuck on a desk 50% of the time, but I also want to work in the field. But my end goal is and will be marsoc... which would be a good mos considering my aspirations and score on the Asvab?
>>
>>28584063
I'm assuming you retired since your DoD card is expired? Because if you aren't you can always check IPERMS.
>>
>>28584143
>I'm assuming you retired since your DoD card is expired?

It's only good for two years when you ETS. I should have taken advantage of it but the closest base with a commissary and PX was Patrick.

>>28584136
>while doing a job that can translate for outside LATER down the road

You're not really going to find this tbqh family.

Yeah, experience in intel, for example, will give an advantage in personal knowledge and ability. But anything you want to do when you get out is going to require additional education (trade school or college).

And you're not going to have a lot of time to play commando prospect if you have an actual job to do.
>>
Will the drill instructor make me wear a dress and dance for him in private?
>>
>>28584189
Forgot to mention, it's in my plans to get a degree. What I meant for a job outside is mainly if sth goes wrong and I have to get out of the military, my objective is to make it a career
>>
>>28584218
>What I meant for a job outside is mainly if sth goes wrong and I have to get out of the military, my objective is to make it a career

Well really, the only way "shit will go wrong" is if you get booted out, you decide after your initial contract not to reenlist, or you don't meet your HYT (the enlisted version of Up or Out).

So either you fuck up and get an OTH, Dishonorable, Bad Conduct etc. or you get fucked up and get a medical discharge, you find out the military really isn't the action movie you've been lead to believe and you get out, or you don't make your E5 by the time you hit 10 years and you're barred from reenlistment.

Other than that, even if you hit 20 years and get out as an SNCO, any job you try to get when you get out will be essentially starting over.

Very little military experience actually 1 for 1 translates to the real world.
>>
>>28584246
>Very little military experience actually 1 for 1 translates to the real world.

I probably should have added a caveat to this:

For MI specifically, the experience does translate 1 for 1.

The problem is that now to even get a contractor gig you need civilian education.

But most (especially combat arms) don't.

>people in these threads actually concerned about getting employable skills in the military
Unless you're an idiot, you'll be taking classes part-time while you're in, and you can be at least halfway through a bachelor's degree in four years. Finish up the rest of that degree when you get out, and it will look much better on a resume than anything you did during your service (unless you're a nuke).
