Just as a hypothetical, what are /k/'s thoughts of a knife's blade being made completely out of diamond? Laser cut, and extremely strong material, besides the price, what problems would there be? Pic somewhat related
>>
>it chips
>no worries I'll just sharpen it
>>
diamond is brittle as fuck, and good luck sharpening that shit too considering it being hard as fuck too.

also, with dumasscus steel knives costing what they do, do you think knife compnies aren't going to try to mark it up like a bitch
>>
>>28549554
Diamond would break pretty easily.
>>
>what problems would there be?

Brittleness. Now do your homework and go to bed, your geometry test is tomorrow.
>>
Like ceramic, except much more expensive.
>>
diamond is a shit material for anything that isn't drillbits
> extremely strong material
it's a crystal nigga, it'll break along the molecular structure lines or some gay science shit.
it's literally useless for anything that would require it to be long and thin.
fuck your hardest metal meme, op
>>
It would have to be a pretty fucking small knife and cut from something larger than the hope diamond. Sounds expensive.

Also, the difference in sharpness between a very well maintained metal blade and a diamond one wouldn't be large enough for an ordinary human to make use of. It would be like buying an HDMI cord to play Pong.

a metal knife with small diamonds along the edge like a saw blade
would that work?
>>
>>28549554
better would be a knife made completely out of carbon nanotubes
>>
>>28549689
it would be limp and flaccid
>>
Brittle, and its a stupid idea, use steel. Stainless steel is best. Damascus steel if you want to try to impress people who don't give a fuck.
>>
>>28549554
>extremely strong material
"strong" and "hard" are completely different properties

>It's a crystal
So is steel chief.
>>
It would probably be just as sharp and durable as an obsidian knife.
>>
Alright, so diamond knives by themselves are impractical. But let's get theoretical.

Is there any way to make it practical? Maybe by layering stronger metals on top of it like the Japanese did to their katanas? Or what about adding some sort of skeleton to the inside rebar-style. Artificial shaped diamonds have been a thing for a while now, so it's not impossible.
>>
>>28549736
much less sharp
marginally more durable
>>
>>28549744
>let's get theoretical
let's.

How would you sharpen a diamond edge?
>>
>>28549744
Please stop talking.
>>
Why bother? A cheap block of obsidian would be just as sharp.
>>
>a knife forged from the strongest metal
This has to happen
>>
>>28549721
but it's not geometrical and hexagonal and shit like diamond
there's a reason why it has splitting vectors along the symmetry axes of the crystalline structure
>>
>>28549780
Tungsten?
>>
>>28549759
what would blunten it?
>>
>>28549672
I'm literally fucking crying
>>
What about a depleted uranium katana?
>>
>>28549759
the same way you cut diamonds
with more diamonds.
use a wet sanding drum and diamond dust suspended in water
>>
>>28549953
Why not just have the Sorceress pull an enchanted magical sword out of the waters surrounding castle Grey Skull? I mean, since we're being theoretical and all.

>people still use prehistoric stones to sharpen their steel blades
>industrial diamond is available at the same cost
Just bought this for 15 dollar Canadian.
Holy shit it works well on stainless steel.
>>
>>28549744
Of course it's possible to make a diamond blade practical.
You can make a soft and blunt steel edge, and then cover it with diamond dust. Resulting serrated edge will cut steel if dragged across it enough. Only problem is excess static friction, leading to overheating, but it's resolved by using lubrication oil.

That's how you make diamond saw blade.
>>
>>28549825
Diamond, dumbass
>>
>>28549600
damascus steel is a fucking joke. with modern standardized equipment its just a fancy pattern.
>>
>>28549997

Buck has a reputation for making quality products.
>>
>>28549953

Only if it was made from uranium that was enriched 1000 times.
>>
>>28550603
thats my point, if shit like that can be priced at thousands er knife, what do youthink they would do with a super kewl tactical daimond knife.
> Its made of daimonds it must be awesome
> gotta be expensive too

and retards would still buy it
>>
>>28550560
daimond isnt a metal, dumbass
>>
>>28549554
>what problems would there be
It will burn. 850—1000 °C and your diamond knife turns into CO2.
>>
>>28549554
Extremely hard but very brittle. No.
>>
>>28549700
Like your dick

No but I'd still pay to see either of those knives

They're usefull in only pretty limited circumstances like neurophtalmology.
>>
>>28549589
diamonds don't chip, idiot.
>>
>>28553078
Yeah, sure. I'm certain even a basic google search has answers to that.

I kek'ed to hard

So something akin to lead? No thank you.

At those temps your knife is fucked anyway
