I live in a non-shit state. Deadly force is 100% OK to stop someone when you reasonable fear imminent death or serious harm. I wouldn't be charged for shooting armed men in the middle of a robbery, and have full civil immunity if them or their family wants to sue.

Do nothing, they're just here for money. If I decide to pull my gun, someone will die, and that doesn't have to happen. If they begin acting excessive and pose an immediate probably threat to the clerk I will:
1. Move to a position where I can engage the perpetrators without the risk of hitting bystanders behind them.
2. Draw my weapon calmly, making no fast or sudden movements.
3. Acquire the perpetrator that poses the most immediate threat to life (i.e. is brandishing the weapon at the clerk/victim) and fire two or three shots.
4. Acquire the second perpetrator and fire as many shots as it takes to drop him.
5. Assess, if either of the perpetrators is still an immediate threat or reaching for their weapon, fire until they are stopped.
6. Reload, keep both perpetrators in sights while a willing bystander relieves them of their weapons, and proceed to check them for any additional weapons.
7. Safety and holster my weapon, and wait for police.

You'd be perfectly fine to kill him on the spot. I don't know what you've read, or seen on the news, but using lethal force to kill a human being is a criminal act regardless of your intentions or the circumstances surrounding it.
When you kill somebody in self-defense, the prosecutor will usually press charges even if there are 50 people standing nearby yelling "He did it in self defense." and there are 500 camera angles that would back you up. It's still a criminal act and you'll still face charges. However in the US we use an adversarial judicial system which assumes an offender is innocent until proven guilty. It is your duty (more likely your lawyer's duty) in court to prove that your homicide was justifiable using a self-defense argument.

There is a difference between being charged with something, and being convicted of it.
For example, George Zimmerman was charged with murder. But after his trial, he was found not guilty and acquitted of all charges because he argued self-defense and he had a good case.
