What does /k/think of the CUCV M1009? Considering buying one.
>>
bump for interest in the new ones
>>
Buy a ford with the idi. Fuck dem cucv.
>>
>>28515652
As a guy who used to own a Custom Deluxe, I would argue that the CUCV is the pinnacle of classic automotive engineering.
>>
>>28515802
My main interest is the ex military shit it has because it was special order for the military
>>
>>28515652
I've got one, I like it.

If you don't want a slow truck that's loud as fuck inside and has no interior, just buy a civil K5 and paint it green.

The civi truck will be better off road with a 350 and 3.73 or 4.10 axles if you put eBay spools in the diff.
>>
>CUCV
>HMMWV
>cuck-vee gets replaced by hum-vee

Naw, but they're cool as fuck. I went to college with a guy who owned one just like the OP. Got it for a song as gov surplus.
>>
>>28515868
I've heard they don't do that bad speed wise and I am looking for one as a first truck for me, only in high school, so I could care less about how loud it is, so long it gets me to the trade school, the job site, work and back home and can do some offroading its fine.
>>
>>28515870
Most of the ones I find locally are less than $5k and have less than 50,000 miles

They struggle at 70mph. The axles are garbage if you're going to do serious off roading.
>>
Op here, something I meant to add in original post, I want one of these as a first truck. So it doesn't need to be fancy and if I decide to get one I plan on doing almost if not all the upgrading myself, such as sterio, lift, snorkel, a side exist stack, and maybe upgrading the engine and tranny for better gas mileage or speed, depending on what I see more beneficial long term. Remember this is a truck for a kid in high school, so I see it as a perfect first and it doesn't need to be extremely safe.

6.2 or 6.5? I got a 00 k3500 with the 6.5 turbo and its running strong at 191k. Make sure the valve cover gaskets are good along with the transfer case. Also see if the PMD was relocated from the top of the throttle body.
>>
It's loud, it's slow (As in, not capable of highway speeds), it's diesel and gets shit mileage anyway.

The part they did get right is that it's indestructible and it pulls like a fucking ox. Also easy to work on because it's an old diesel, parts may be hard to find though

I'd heard about that, don't plan on going over 65 because legal limit in town is 60 and gas mileage goes to shit after, and for offroading i don't plan on doing anything serious, just mudding with friends or for lack of better description simple hill climbing. If you have any idea what Reno Nevada is like you'll know for the most part what I plan on offroading with it

Try to find a gasket for the fuel filter. Without going to a hummer dealer. Cause a chevy dealer or autozone/adv don't have it.
And good luck on finding a wire harness if it needs one i got lucky to find a guy parting one out.

>>
>>28516142
>>28516168
>>28516190
>>28516199
The M1009 will go well over 100mph, but takes 15 seconds to get to 60. It'll also get in the 20s for fuel economy unless your injectors are bad. The 6.2 was literally called the "fuel miser"in the medium duty trucks.

The other ones top out at 65, but get there quicker, and have shit mileage.

The axle on the M1009 is a little light for serious offloading, but it doesn't matter because it's a 3.08 ratio, which sucks balls for crawling, so you were already going to upgrade. The pickup and chassis cab jobs have heavy axles with 4.56 ratios, which are great for offroading, but garbage on the highway.

They have 3 speed autos.

If you are looking for a hunting/woods truck, the M1009 is pretty good, but if you want to build it, a civi K5 is a better starting point, because you're going to want a gassed and an overdrive to let you street drive with fat final drive ratios.
>>28516279
Parts are everywhere and cheap, dude. It takes regular Chevy stuff, but not like the parts monkey's lookup will tell him. The radiator overflow bottle is out of a van, not the trucks, for instance. The guys on Steel Soldiers know all the part numbers for buying the shit at NAPA.

Except for the glow plug controller, but there's a guy selling new ones he makes on SS.
>>28516218
Sexy. Gonna put the 6.5 manifolds and a turbo on it, or what's the guts?
>>28516289
Because the wiring harness is an oddball, and finding a good 6.2 is modestly hard.

Also 165 hp in best state of tune is kind of low for a burb.
>>28516245
A guy west of the twin cities did a CCLB, it's pretty hot, even if it's a TBI. 350 instead of a diesel.

If I were you, I'd get a dry bodied civi truck from down south, put a LM4 5.3 from a 99-07 in it over either the 4L80E or NV4500, a set of 14 bolt 4.10s (get a steer axle out of a K30 and the disk brake rear axle out of a 200X 2500) with EBAY lockers, a 2 inch set of lift springs, 33s, a soft top, and paint it how you like, then enjoy luxuries like a radio, air con, carpet, sound insulation, and having double the power.

A $2500 California truck that won't pass smog and $3500 worth of junkyard parts will make your K5 eat a M1009 in every metric.

I've only built mine because I was hit head on by a kid in an Explorer, and needed to do a ton of work anyways.

Now if i know my Muscle Car 101, SBC Engine mounts should fit aswell. That means he can throw a 350 SB in it and have a Reliable, reasonably cheap and easy engine that you can work on alone. Not saying big blocks aren't stronk as fug a 350 can be tuned to be just as good as a 396. As long as you stay off the loud petal, youll be fine on gas.

>3.73 or .410 axles
Axles don't have gear ratios, dude.

Captcha has a k5 in it. They know
>>
>>28516173
Op are you me and my brother? We both had civi k5s for our first cars. IMO they make excellent first vehicles because they are tanks and help you develop spacial awareness of a large vehicle while still being a bit more wieldy than a full size pickup. Safety wise even rotted to shit they are pretty good. On my first one frame was good but body was slowly rusting away. I got into an accident where I had a direct hit on my passenger side into a f150 we were both going 45-50. With my seat position one click up from all the way back I or my seat didn't move enough for me to hit anything. I didn't even get a bruise from the seatbelt. If I was in anything smaller I'd have been seriously injured or dead.
I bought another k5 after that. Personally I say go civi if you just wanna drive on the highway and just have a big truck for job sites and stuff my suggestion is make sure the door locks, windows, and especially the rear window works well. If that rear window goes its a pain in the ass to get down and replace all the parts. Something electronic has loads more space under the hood. If its fuel injected expect to have to replace the sending unit and or fuel pump and try not to run the tank below 1/4 it helps keep the fuel pump and sending unit cooler and lubricated. If it is rotted in the back make sure the rear window doesn't catch and if you plan to take the top off and you have lots of rot the body will flex and make the rear window drag going up and down once the top is back on. With a weak motor it may not be able to overcome some spots or it may actually get stuck. There are at least 2 companies that still make soft tops. And in the cold that rear window is gonna be sloooooowwww going up and down. If you want fuel economy without the hassle of deasel I got 18mpg with my second one a few times, had a 305 and quadrajet and was a pretty nice driver. Anything model 1986+ should have the upgraded 700r4 that is slightly better. Buy a 4 speed if you can find one.
>>
>>28516289
Having done an ass load of body work on a 1990 k5 and only being able to find suburban parts I can assure you not everything is the same. Why a radiator support would be different fuck if I know but it is they don't bolt up in the same spots or have the same mounting spots.
>>28516513
Stick a v8 in there. I've seen it, the whole things rumbled and purred.
>>28516673
I've got a k5 from Florida currently in CT. Only rot is drivers rocker. Sun roof. Top doesn't leak. 305. 700r4 that kinda shifts, needs replacing and have replacement that goes with it. Factory off road and tow package with dual shocks and over travel stoo. Black softtop. Eldelbrock carb and intake. All the original parts I've taken off in a box. Also have most of a tpi setup I never got to finish building. Unknown milage but somewhere around 200k. I'm sure I have lots more shit I can give you with it too. Got a 350 and ok tranny I can send off with it too. $3700. Email if interested.

But I do agree with this guy. Buy a good body and you can do anything you want from an ls swap to crate motor for another $3000 or less.
>>
>>28518873
I've been practicing in an 01 suburban with a lift so handling a big vehicle isn't new. Thanks for telling me how safe and how capable these are. I want a CUCV because of the axles on it already and the military proven factor. Having a 6.2 diesel is just an added plus for me.
