That's a U-2 Dragon lady, they're very high altitude recon/spy planes.
Difficulty in landing stems from having to make compromises in design for functionality. The lighter it is, the further/higher it can loiter. Not to mention that the fuselage doesn't have any other areas to mount more wheels. It is ultimately a very very stretched F-104. Sucks, but it comes with the job.

It's just for missile detection and 360 degree situational awareness (detect hot objects from 100km and cue the EOTS or radar to check it out, etc). The EOTS is the one that provides the sharp image that lets you count the number of windows on a building from 100km away.

The U-2's actually quite hard to fly (operationally), to where they have to use autopilot to keep it in up that high. Essentially they fly so high and have such high aspect ratio wings that:
If they increase their airspeed by 2%, they'll get buffeting from some airflow going supersonic over their wings and lose lift.
If they fly 2% slower, they'll stall.

We shipped our manufacturing overseas for the most part. Lots of defense contractors are still in US but they rely heavily on overseas parts and contracts for smaller parts. Basically we would have a bad time for a while. But the gov still stores the tooling for basic planes like the A4 Skyhawk for this sort of situation. I use joystick, and I love it because it gives great immersion, more control in the direction of your plane, and smoother feel overall. What I didn't get was well optimized joystick control from warthunder, mouse users literally EVERYWHERE, "realistic" battles having England vs america or etc, and LA-5's that outclass EVERY GERMAN PLANE in literally everything. If it wasn't for the fact that IL-2 sturmovik is old or IL-2 Stalingrad not having decent multiplayer elements I would be playing those all day long.

i know i am whining, but i really want to play the game. i want to like it. i like the high tiered British fighters, like the tempests. but every god damn game the find themselves outclimbed by fucking everything. the Yaks and Las are the worst. not uncommon with a climb speed more thna 25% higher than planes of other nations. and somehow all allied teams consist of 50% bombers, pretty much facing every UK/US plane with 2 russian ones, both at higher altitude. next game you play the rhine map, but start next to an F-80C. you spent the next four minutes trying to attack ground targets because loljets and get blasted out of the sky by a flying wing that was never used. any attempt att communication in the team will result in three people speaking slavrunes in the all chat. next time you play against the americans (?!?). the F8F is a far superior aircraft, and shits on most plane at this battlerating.
