Can anyone recommend a good edc knife? I'm looking for a small fixed blade for general use. Preferably one with a 3 inch blade and a leather sheath. I don't really like to carry a folder in my pocket on a clip because I'm constantly putting things in and out of my pockets. Price isn't really an issue. Any other preferences would be that the steel it's made from would hold its edge fairly well, so I don't have to be constantly sharpening it.

These both seem like good choices, thanks. Is there any real cons I can think of with carrying a fixed blade? This would be the first that I'd carry everyday.
>>
I'm personally looking for something versatile, I don't really want it for defence (Canada), but I don't really want a pocket knife. I just want something for opening boxes or fighting off dogs if need be.

>Is there any real cons I can think of with carrying a fixed blade?

The only con is it's twice as long as a folder. But since you're not wanting pocket carry, this is not an issue.

autists on /out/ who think a $15 skandi grind knife is the be all end all of survival tools and spending more is just a waste of money

autists on /out/ who can't appreciate the pros of a $15 skandi ground knife that punches well above it's weight class and can't conceal the asshurt when a good sharpening stone and a mora/opinel provides a sharper, more durable knife than whatever l33t oper8or knifu they've invested a lot of dollarydoos and personal identity into.

IE the battle of the meme knives.

Whats the practicality of edc a Short KA-BAR USMC in Canada.

Canada law does not restrict the size of a knife you can carry however carying a weapon is prohibited. So it has to be justifiable as a tool
>>
I carry a Charles May knife as my EDC. Great craftsmanship, Had to wait 2 years for this one, did not have to pay a dime until the knife was done. Good holster. Made to my specification in every way. Steel I had done in D2, had orange and black g10 grips with black liners, mosaic pins, jimping for a thumb grip, done perfectly has good bit with out being too aggressive. I have only sharpened it once in two years and have skinned 5 deer with it as well as opened thousands of boxes and misc cutwork daily.

Or just keep it lightly oiled. Or just get a stainless steel knife
>>
>>28458702
depends on where you are

if youre rural you can probably just open carry it on your belt. if youre urban you might want to conceal it

if a cop has to ask you about your knife you're probably doing something wrong anyway, but the standard response is
>tool
>"survival" tool
>this is the knife that fits my needs
>bla bla

practicality is limited for fixed blades IMO. unless you can carry it comfortable in a shoulder holster you might be better off with a robust folder that will fit in a pocket. folders with the wave feature will draw just as quickly as a fixed blade.

If you REALLY want it that bad, you could pay a knifemaker to regrind the widely available Outdoor Cuisine III model to match the blade shape of the II, and maybe swap out the handles to a darker material.

You'd have to live with the slot in the blade and it'll cost more than the knife itself if you don't DIY it, but you'll have your knife.

i'll post this here instead of starting a fresh thread

looking for a EDC knife that'll last long time, hopefully my first and last one, so not worried about cash so long as it is reasonable (i.e. costs more for higher quality)

i went into a knife store in my town and checked out the different opening mechanisms, locks, yada yada. i found that i like flippers and frame locks

of course i could just get the kershaw leek, i'd pick the composite one with the d2 steel, but i figured i'd spend even more for quality since i'll hopefully keep this for a long time.

i landed on pic related, the Zero Tolerance Dmitry Sinkevich 0452CF. it's got a larger blade than the leek (4.1" vs 3"), apparently one of the best knife steels around (S35VN), and is also a flipper with a frame lock. it's slightly heavier (4.6 oz vs 3.1 oz) and longer closed (5.2" vs 4") but that seems like a reasonable tradeoff for a larger blade

i'm no knife expert so i'd like some advice, am i making any wrong assumptions here? is there anything i'm not considering? i like to spend my money on quality, so the extra $160 for the zt over the kershaw is worth it to me if i'm making a long-term investment in a good EDC. appreciate any advice or even pointing me to another flipper to research

>Can you get shave sharp with something like that?
Pretty close
>>
>>28465748

Same here because I'm a lazy bum.

>>28465871

It's fuckeasy to use (compared to a traditional whetstone), and with the supplied stones are more than adequate for getting a shaving-razor edge.

My only gripe is I wish it came with a pair of rougher stones for really jacked up edges. My s30v knife chips hardcore under hard use and it's a pain to get the edge nice again.
>>
>>28465871
Very easy to use. You just have to be able to hold a knife straight while you slide it down the stone. The only con is that it isn't very efficient for super beat up edges since it doesn't have course stones, meaning if your knife is super dull, it'll take forever on the stock stones.

>>28466864
I've heard S30V performs well with a toothy edge. Try finishing on courser stones.

A cheap way to get some courser stones for the Sharpmaker without shelling out for the diamond or CBN rods would be to put sandpaper over the rods with some binder clips and strop the knife over the rods.

I've also heard of people using Congress Tool triangular rods, though they may not fit very well into the base without some modding.
