The Russians are not going to send in their military overtly. They may support the rebels with manpower and small arms, but Putin does not want that money sink. The current Novorussian holdings can't sustain themselves and they have no resources to exploit. The long this conflict goes, the worse off the "invader" is.

The rebels do however have coal mines. They even sell coal to Ukraine and did so even during the conflicts.
And the russians already took what they needed from ukraine anyway and the rebellion that will stay frozen for as long as they want is a guarantee that Ukraine isnt going to join NATO, or even EU.
Many people conveniently forget what went on in Syria before the Sochi Olympics, with NATO wanting to bomb the shit out of Assad and all regime forces to liberate Syria and give it democracy with brave freedom fighters in charge.

From the Russian perspective the west funded the coup that ousted the pro-Russian regime (as has happened in Syria, Libya etc.) and forced a response.
Russia has already lost the Warsaw pact and knows feels betrayed by NATO (Bill Clinton implied there would be no NATO expansion into the former Warsaw Pact).
With Ukraine in the western sphere of influence Russia would have no strategic depth - NATO forces in the country would easily advance across the Northern European Plain straight into Moscow should war occur.
Hence Russia has taken steps to defend itself.

Except polling taken place prior to everything showed that Ukraine was more than 2/3s opposed to joining the EU or NATO. The original protests weren't even about joining the EU, but about the government reneging on an EU Association Agreement - Russia has one of those by the way. The protests weren't even growing until Yanukovych decided to go full heavy-hand with the response. This entire thing has its basis in anti-Russian sentiment stemming back a few years over gas payments and Sevastopol but most people didn't care too much. Then the crackdown happened everyone starting remembering they got a raw deal on the Russian Navy base lease and noticing that Yanukovych was doing all but giving Putin a bj and realizing, "Holy shit, Ukraine sucks and we probably should do something about it." All Russia managed to do was lose Ukraine to the West and create a beneficial but unstable political arrangement as it hinges entirely on Ukraine either continuing being incompetent, not exactly a terrible assumption considering its track record, or Ukraine not cutting its losses with Crimea or the East.
tl;dr: Everything would have come up Russia if the people involved showed some restraint and nuance in their responses but that's a little much to ask from a part of the world where the proper response to some guy calling you a faggot is to fuck him in the ass to prove you're not gay.

It's a fucking shame since that site had regular updates on most things happening in the world. It was my primary source of military photos (I know have to use militaryporn on reddit, at least there's new content). What I liked about MP was that it offered location, time, and day a lot of the time and this is what my Ukraine folder looks like. Unfortunately most of the pictures are from before the site went down, I've got nothing recent.
