Hey fellas,

What do you think of these two rifles?

Top is a Winchester 30-30 model 740

Bottom Marlin 1894 .44 cal

A friend offered to trade me a Glock 19 for the Marlin .44 cal... Good trade?

Another buddy offered to trade me a Ruger 10-22 with stainless steel barrel (shiny) and wood laminate stock.

Good trades?

If you had these guns would you keep them or sell, trade?

Thanks
>>
30-30 seems to be an unusual caliber. I don't really see a reason to keep the gun except as a novelty.

I suppose the same would go for the .44.
>>
>>28424654
I would keep them both. You are getting the short end of the stick.
>>
>>28424654
neither of those are good trades for you. if you do trade get 100 bucks with the glock and 300 with the 10/22.
>>
>>28424681
Wut? Neither .30-30 or .44 Mag could be described as unusual. Venerable, yes; unusual, no.

Keep them OP. They'll gain value astronomically compared to the Glock or 10/22.
>>
>>28424654
I've been seeing Marlin 1894s going for $600+ at auctions lately, especially if it's a pre-Cerberus Marlin (look for a little "JM" stamp on the barrel near the receiver). I don't think you're getting the good end of the deal there.
>>
>>28424654
>friend
>buddy

Umm, no they're not.
>>
nogunz and even i know that's a terrible deal OP
>>
>>28424681

30-30

Unusual

I can tell you don't live in an area where people hunt a lot.
>>
>>28424681
.30-30 is very common. If I had those guns I'd keep them and just set aside cash for a Glock or 10/22, because that would be a shitty shitty trade.

Also like >>28424712 said, they'll be worth something later in life, even if you don't love them.

I think this is a pic of the "JM" you mentioned.
>>
Keep them OP. Or you could sell them for good prices, and buy the guns you actually want. A good tip for selling is throw in a box of ammo.
>>
>>28424803
Thank you. And I also give thanks to all you you who provided me with very useful information. You guys are right. My so called "friends" are getting the better deal. Thanks very much for your sound advice all of you.
>>
>>28424654
Do not tell either! Glocks and 10/22's are ridiculously abundant.
>>
>>28424791
Yeah, that means it was made before Cerberus/Remington bought them out and their quality control went to hell. Good, solid reliable rifle.
>>
>>28424791
Hang onto them, Hoss. You have some decent rifles.

I can't believe your friends tried to fucking rip you off. What pieces of shit.
>>
>>28424803

You're one of those "I'll give yer thus here savage axcu-sextel stocking-trigger mossy oak-primos-bone collector edition en two boxes ah shells. The shells is thurty five dollars a box!" kinda guys. Fuck those guys.
If-so-facto...
>>
>>28424866
If you're out for a 30-30 and you don't have ammo, you can buy the gun and if he throws in a box you don't have to go buy a box of ammo. Whats so wrong with that?
>>
>>28424654
Keep keep keep. Either one of those guns is worth 2 g19s if you wanna sell them go on armslist and chech prices as they are climbing fast
>>
>>28424654
I'd keep both. They're great guns to have for a little cowboy shooting. They're also less and less common--you can find and buy a Glock or a 10/22 anytime from most anyone.

Personally, I'm on the hunt for a good 357/38 lever-action.

Total fuddlore. Remington used JM barrels initially after the buyout. Pre 2008 is what you want. The serial number is where you look

Marlin Year of Manufacture

Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixs to the serial number; this coding only applies to serialized rifles:

1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S
1960 (August)-1961-U
1961 (August)-1962-V
1963-W
1964-Y,-Z
1965-AA
1966-AB
1967-AC
1968-AD, -68
1969-69
1970-70
1971-71
1972-72

Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75] and SN 94365295 would have been made in 2006 [ 100 - 94 = 06 (2006) ].

For Marlin Rimfire Rifles [non-serialized]:

From 1962 thru 1968 Marlins rimfire rifles (other than the 39 series lever actions) used a two letter date code that was stamped on the barrel. This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by Law after 1968. The first letter of the date code represented the month of manufacture while the second letter indicated the year. This date code was usually stamped on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. The first letter of the date code is as follows:

A = Jan.
B = Feb.
C = Mar.
D = Apr.
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = Aug.
I = Sep.
J = Oct.
K = Nov.
L = Dec.

The second letter of the date code is as follows:

F = 1962
G = 1963
H = 1964
I = 1965
J = 1966
K = 1967
L = 1968

So a date code of "JK" would indicate that rifle was made in October of 1967.

Additionally the Remington serial numbers now start with "MR"

All guns pre 1983 had a half cock safety and after 83 have cross bolt and half cock safteys
