They were just better.

Better ships, more ships, better aircraft, more aircraft, better soldiers, more soldiers, better infantry weapons across the board.

About the only thing the Japanese had that was superior was torpedos and night battle tactics.

Not to mention the Marine Corps' absence of mercy, sympathy, or compasion. There was a reason very few prisoners were taken by the US in the Pacific. That's the way you win a war against such a fanatical enemy.
>>

lel that's stupid, Japan had less mercy than anyone.
>>
PROTIP: logistics wins wars.

There doesn't need to be any other answer.

America didn't really win against the Japan. They decimated Japanese population centers while ignoring military targets. The Japan have been gradually withdrawing it's troops from surrounding regions to better defend these vicious attacks by Americans on their people. America won by attack Japanese people and not military. It's disgust.

showing mercy means nothing, if other side doesn't accept it.
Japs booby trapping their wounded and forcing those unable to fight to kill themself with grenades, make soldiers think twice about taking prisoners. Not to mention Emperor's soldiers massacring their own civilians, by forcing them to commit suicides, or just outright killing them.
Ironically Marine Corp showed more mercy to Japanese than their own army did, using Japanese American to negotiate surrendering of settlements to avoid mass suicides.

It didn't help that the Japanese Army, until the very end of the war, never grasped Patton's maxim that "war isn't about dying for your country. It's about making the other poor bastard die for his."
>>
japs had all their troops tied up in china
Americans vastly outspent and outnumbered the japs
Even still, the dumb americans lost tens of thousands taking irrelevant islands

The japs slaughtered the civilian populations as they withdrew in a fit of pique. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legitimate industrial/strategic targets. Tokyo's firebombing was arguably more brutal but justifiable as a morale target. While civilian casualties were inflicted, they pale in comparison to the atrocities committed by the Japanese.
