I can't be the only person who likes tasteful sporters, right? I don't know what it is, but I think they're fantastic.
I even kind of prefer them to original military versions, when they're well done.
Post you are sporters in this thread.
In fact, I've been meaning to find something with a garbage stock so I could build a gun similar to this.
I guess it's just me here. :(
>>28409435
Saw a Moron with a full length mannlicher style stock once. Looked pretty cool.
Having a devil of a time finding a pic online though.
>>28409909
I wouldn't mind a Mosin in a Mannlicher stock. Sounds pretty neat, actually.
Oh wow, French milsurpers hate this.
I just bought a WW2 bring back type 38 Arisaka with an intact chrysanthemum and someone cut a bunch of the stock off that normally goes all the way up the barrel but for a hundred bucks, i had to have it
>>28410189
That's another bonus. They're usually quite a bit cheaper.
>>28410392
wait what do you mean ?
>>28410521
Sporterized rifles are cheaper than intact rifles.
>>28409435
I don't understand the point. Why not just get a remington 700 if that's what you want?
>>28410543
I like variety.
I don't have pictures on me, but I've got a Yugo Mauser in a Boyd stock. I picked it up for about $180 a year ago, and I plan to eventually get it cerakoted and have a scope mounted to it. My father has picked up about 4 or 5 Krag Jorgensons that were sporterized most likely by apprentice gunsmiths back in the day, and I don't think he spent more than a grand on all of them combined. Sporterized rifles are nice if you just want the gun in your collection and can't afford a minty or even just an unmolested version.
One of my biggest regrets is that I passed on a sporterized Arisaka. It had the mum and still had a nicely knurled safety, sitting in a very expensive stock. The sights had been replaced with a vintage set of irons from probably the 60's or 70's.
>it was $165
I kick myself every time I think about it.
>>28410615
you like variety, so you want to make a mosin more similar to a rem 700? surely even you realize how stupid that sounds.
>>28410643
I like the variety in caliber and action, and all that. Maybe it looks more like a Rem 700, but it certainly doesn't feel like one.
They're also a lot nicer to carry around for
hunting.
>>28410663
butchered mosins are nicer to hunt with than actual hunting rifles?
you were a fucking faggot on /o/, and you're a fucking faggot on /k/.
>>28410543
Because often enough they're so ridiculously cheap it's hard to pass up. Some of the deals I've come across:
>1903 in the white with a beater stock: $100
>1917 Enfield with a badly cobbled stock: $150
>Many, many SMLE's for right at the $125
>More mosins than I can remember for $75
>Mausers that I've never seen touch the $200 mark
>Krag-Jorgensons for $100
>that fucking Arisaka for $165
Getting a sporter that isn't mauled by bubba is a look into the life of a budding gunsmith who learned his trade on what were then cheap and plentiful rifles. Some of the work you see is incredibly intricate. Comparing them to a Remington 700 isn't really fair.
>>28410682
>butchered
That's the thing, they've already been butchered. Why not enjoy them?
I don't get it. Are you supposed to restore every sporter you get your hands on?
>>28410759
I would happily restore any sporter I got my hands on. But I mean, if some faggot already did the butchering and wants to sell it for a good price, go for it.
>>28410682
>butchered mosins are nicer to hunt with than actual hunting rifles?
>actual hunting rifles
Does a hunting rifle kill things more deader than a sporterized one?
>>28410775
I don't see the point in restoration. Once a rifle has been cut up, its value as a surplus gun is gone forever.
I've done up a couple sporterized No4's for friends. They were already cut down when I got them, so value lost, but they turned out nicely.
>pic related
>>28410534
so did i get a pretty good deal for a hundred bucks ?
>>28410775
Getting your hands on a replacement stock means that another rifle had to be destroyed. I hope you're proud of yourself, shithead.
>>28410804
Yeah, you did. You may want to buy reloading dies for jap ammo, though. Pretty expensive if you aren't making it yourself.
>>28410778
why would a mosin be nicer though if they all kill things the same? and surprisingly, some guns are more designed to do a task well than others. A mosin will never be as good of a hunting rifle as a rifle designed from the ground up as a hunting rifle. Making a gun kill things dead isn't all that goes into gun design.
>>28410811
Kill yourself, tripfaggot.
>>28410804
For $100, you can't be doing much better. If you look hard enough, there are really replacement stocks that would actually make a decent sport rifle out of it, and would make the gun look and feel much better in the hand.
>>28410811
or, and I know this is a crazy thought, what if you get the stock from a rifle that's already ruined? A bore that's completely shot, a barrel that's split down the middle, etc.
>>28410826
he's so stupid and annoying, in every thread at all hours. i think he's a virgin NEET
>>28410852
I work and go to school, you wiener. It's just that I still have ample time for shitposting.
>>28410822
yeah i've been thinking about that but i'm thinking i'll clean it up and hang it on my wall and probably only shoot it a few different times a year, it is my first rifle after all, i like it alot more than rossi single shotgun the crazies over at big5 where trying to convince me to get
>>28410857
no one likes you, gtp. your car is shit and your taste in guns are shit. You know this though, so I'm not sure why I'm even bothering to type it out. You should head over to /v/ or ar general, they're more your kind of people.
>>28410835
good to know, what do they usually run in price ?
>>28410857
If you work and go to school you shouldn't have time.
>>28410825
>why would a mosin be nicer though if they all kill things the same?
Because people have opinions and preferences, and mine is that I like my Mosin for hunting.
>and surprisingly, some guns are more designed to do a task well than others.
Surprisingly if you're a good enough shot, you can make any rifle work just fine.
>A mosin will never be as good of a hunting rifle as a rifle designed from the ground up as a hunting rifle.
Thousands of Mosin owners would disagree with you. I can with firsthand knowledge disagree with you.
>>28410882
I shitposted plenty when I went to work and had school. it's really not as hard as failures pretend it is.
>>28410894
you literally didn't say anything but
>I like my mosin so it's gooder!
name one way a sporterized mosin is better than an actual hunting rifle at hunting. Simply liking something more doesn't make it better. You can hunt just fine with a bone stock mosin if you wanted to, iron sights and all. That doesn't mean something actually designed for the task won't be more suited for it.
>>28410881
Honestly, they can get really pricey. I've seen some stocks run up to $300, but there are some right around the $150 that are pretty decent. Boyd made the one for my Mauser, and I think it runs right around the $175 mark.
That being said, it's a lot of money for a sporterized rifle. If you wanted to make it personal, and learn some woodworking while you're at it, try making your own stock for it. Watch some Midway USA videos on Youtube, do some reading, etc.
>>28410926
Name one way it's worse. It works just fine. Why are you so mad about this kiddo?
>>28410945
i guess i should have been more specific, i meant like what is the usual price of type 38s in general
>>28410952
accuracy
action
ergos
>>28410970
Good question. It depends a lot on condition, but I've seen them for as low as $150 and as high as $600. For $100 I think you did OK.
>>28410952
Heavy.
Too long.
Looks like shit.
>>28410987
aren't they about the same weight?
>>28410986
well then, i think i am going to work on the stock and clean up the bolt and barrel and just hold on to it
>>28410976
>accuracy
Mosins group just fine. Finn Mosins are on par with most sporting rifles.
>action
Cycles just as fast as a slicked up 700.
>ergos
Is subjective. My mosin fits my hand just fine.
>>28411014
>If I make things up, they'll surely believe me!
no anon, none of that is true. it's okay to admit the mosin isn't the greatest rifle ever made. Other things can be better than it. You can still like it.
>>28410907
OSGTP if you're going to be a tripfag stick with it, you shouldn't post pretending to be some anonelse, its lame.
Working 10 hours/week and going to school part-time it isn't. Working 30+ hours, full time school in a challenging major, and socializing and getting laid? Not at all
Point is OSGTP you're a faggot
>>28411021
not gtp. I think he's a faggot too. but I went to work full time, school full time, and still managed to shitpost and socialize.
>gtp
>getting laid
he gets fucked by his shitty car plenty.
>>28411020
Ok sonny.
>>28411020
It's shit but poorfags love it for good reason.
>>28411067
it's a fine rifle. I have an m38 and like it. But I'm not pretending it's the best thing every and it's just as good as modern bolt guns. If I go hunting, it's not generally the gun I grab.
I have a weird boner for half-stocked match rifles with aperture sights based on military bolt actions.
Heres my P14. The sporterization makes its 26" barrel look insanely long!
>>28410822
You may find that arisaka fires 7.7x56r. R being for rimmed. If it is that, you can just use 303 british for it. Literally the same ammo. The japs copied alot of british designs.
