Initially I was fascinated by the idea of a weapon system which would be considered a failure if it was ever actually used.
Later I became interested in the contradiction that preventing a nuclear war meany doing everything you could to convince the other guy that you were willing to fight one.
The whole thing, weapons designed to never be used, trying to convince someone that you were willing to do something so that you didn't actually have to, led me to pursue it as a career interest.
In my opinion, the best way to never have to fight a nuclear war is to do everything in your power to show your opponent that you are indeed willing to fight one, and believe that you can win.

Actually, their nuclear program was pretty advanced, mostly because they threw money at it. It was probably one of the most well funded nuclear weapons programs in history, multiple systems for initiation, implosion and plutonium production/machining were researched in parallel. This isn't a reflection on the native ingenuity of India, more that they were happy to spend a lot of money on nuclear weapons then go begging for aid when they inexplicably couldn't feed their population. By comparison, the Pakistani program was pretty basic. They didn't even have plutonium based weapons until the 90s, instead relying on HEU devices.
India and Pakistan have already had a war since becoming nuclear states, and they didn't drop 'em then; guessing they're not gonna drop 'em now.

Huge majority of those hundreds of tested nukes in sixties were blown up in deserts or remote islands. Not above cities or temperate areas with forests. Not to mention the fact most of atmospheric testing was done with low yield bombs. Couple decades of atmospheric testing didn't happen in matter of days.
