We were sent AR15s, in giant cardboard boxes as opposed to the usual wooden crates, for Borneo. Originally they were issued to the point-man but after a few weeks the whole patrol coy were taking them out. This was 1963 through 1964.
5000 were ordered direct from the manufacturer, but more were purchased from the US government down the line and marked Colt. Most for the far east (Hong Kong battalions were using them until the late 80s), but a few for the forces we had left in Central America and Africa at the time.
Personally I quite liked mine for the task at hand. It was a light, accurate and easy to use firearm. Others weren't as fond but we didn't have any of the horror stories that plagued its reputation later on in the decade.
We can't all have good taste, I guess.
